Patagonia's gear is always excellent quality(which you pay for) but sometimes their sizing and designs are a bit odd. This is one example. I wear a large in just about everything, but in this I took a medium. Also, although this material is not thin, it's not even close to what I would consider to be thermal weight. If this is their heaviest duty underwear, you might want to look elsewhere. For the money, it's not at all what I would expect. Yes, it's comfortable, but it's not super warm.
I bought this shirt in December, and have never been happier with a base layer. It's warm, but vents heat extremely well when I open my jacket or wind shirt, it has great thumb loops, and it's just generally very comfortable. I am 5'9", with a 36" chest, 6' arm span, 15" neck, and 31" waist, but I bought a medium instead of small based on my experience with my R1 pullover. The medium fits me perfectly in the neck, shoulders, arms, and chest, but it has a fair bit of extra material around the abdomen. I wear this shirt so often I bought two more with the current sale. I wear it around the house on my weekends, I wear it under insulating layers while camping in the cold, and I have worn it under a wind jacket while hiking in temperatures from 20° to 60° Fahrenheit. It also makes an excellent sleep shirt at home and in the hammock, and I plan to use it as my second layer for when the days cool off during the warmer months. It has completely replaced my R1 fleece for all active use. In conclusion, I highly recommend the Capilene thermal both as a winter base layer, and as a lightweight mid layer for 3-season use.
Patagonia has a definite win with this layer. I use it for just about everything. Snowboarding, biking, hiking, camping, etc. I can get several days use out of it without having to wash it, which is a win for the environment. It is lighter than other base layers I have owned in the past. It breaths very well. It maintains body temperature effectively. After 50 plus days of use it shows no visible signs of wear. The bright crimson red is great for visibility too.
This top was incredibly warm under a nylon t-shirt and a Patagonia Windsweep jacket. On a dry day I used this with the Windsweep liner and on a snowy day I used the thermal top with the waterproof outer layer. For the cold nights around the fire I used the thermal top with both the Windsweep layers together. I was very warm even at 20 F.
Great, lightweight, and very warm. Great for running in cold weather with an additional layer and windbreaker, depending on the temp, but I’d take this out when it’s <40F
I am very disappointed with this Patagonia product. It is much lighter and thinner than I expected. In fact, if held up to the light you can see through the product. How insulated is that? I still have some great Patagonia Capilene THERMAL baselayers from years ago that have withstood the test of time and many washings. With this product I lose all respect for Patagonia. I will never buy their Capilene products again.
Not what you need for winter. This item has only the name of previous versions. It is super ligth and delicate more like women's stocking. I bougth this for a climbing trip but no way i will take it
This is pattys thickest base layer? Am I missing something? Daylight shows through both sides together just fine. Not impressed. Wore over capeline and under merino wool layers in 20 F and noticed no difference. Will be returning.
It's darn near perfect, right "out of the box". The fabric, the feel and the fit is why I always go back to Patagonia. When a new garment feels like an old shoe, you probably got it right...Thanks REI & you Patagonia types too!
Wore the top for a section hike through the smokies in October. It was perfect as a camp/sleep shirt and then when Hurricane Delta started dumping on us during our last day hiking it kept my body temp regulated through rain and cold gusts of wind. Awesome piece of gear!
