Not superfluous!
I'm a minimalist backpacker, and if I don't need it for survival and a minimum of comfort it doesn't go into my pack. But I received the Infinity Mug as a gift and felt obliged to pack it on a recent trip. What an awesome thing to carry! The one thing I offer myself every day of a trip is a good cup of coffee in the morning, and up until now I always drank it straight out of my metal cook pot, burning my mouth for the first sips and drinking it cold by the end. But with this mug I can take my time and really enjoy it. The weight is inconsequential, and I was able to simply strap it to the outside of my pack and it didn't take up any room. I worried that the lid might fall off, but it stuck on there throughout some pretty rough country. I discovered as well that it has interior measurement markings, which allowed me to use it to put just the right amount of water in my freeze-dried meals, making them much better. I'm going to vote this thing as "awesome".

My nose is not particularly long.
This is a wonderful, lightweight mug...however, there is a small tit on the flap that swings over and seals the mouth piece on the lid. That tit fits into a corresponding hole in the lid. (The purpose of the tiny hole is to allow air into the mug when one drinks.) Every time I take a sip, that tit pokes me right on the tip of my nose! It's actually quite comical and I was butt of many jokes while we climbed up to Camp Muir on the south side of Mt. Rainier. I almost returned the mug, but like it so much, I just sanded off the tit when I got home. I asked my wife to test the mug when I got home. It didn't bother her. Maybe I do have a large nose?

Love this cup

The functionality of this mug is genius. It holds a large amount of liquid while still being light weight and packable...so convenient to transport while trying to remain minimal with how you're backpacking. Beverage stays warm for a decent amount of time, at least a couple of hours. Easy to clean, minimal crevices where liquid can unknowingly accumulate. 4 stars instead of 5 because I'm now purchasing my second one, since the outer blue covering is unraveling at the bottom. If it's meant to be traveled with for hiking and camping, I would have hoped the glue and fabric could have been longer lasting.

Just what I was looking for

I was headed out for a backpacking trip and realized I'd forgotten to to bring an insulated mug. Pulled into a Target to find something cheap. No dice. Went to a nearby REI and found this. It was the right price and functions well. The first day out, with the temp somewhere around 40, I fixed my coffee and then got distracted. When I went back to it over an hour later it was still more than warm enough. The mug itself is just the right size to be comfortable in my hand and the strap means I don't always have to hold on as tightly as with most insulated drink containers. The one improvement is like to see is the addition of measurement lines to use for measuring out water.

So many uses!

Bought this mug with some hesitation a few weeks ago but that hesitation was gone with its first use. I wasn't sure that with a cup full of hot liquid that the handle would support it comfortably, but it was designed perfectly for your grip. Also, I am always weary of plastic products with my hot liquids but its felt super durable, doesn't impart any plastic "taste". The plastic cup and sleeve don't hold onto that campsite dust/dirt that seems to want to cling to everything. I used the mug as a bowl, a coffee cup and soup ladle on our most recent backpacking trip. The mug sleeve slides off for easy cleaning of the cup itself and cloth handle means you can hang it from anything for storage or drying.

Great mug with one caveat

Great product, keeps things cold or warm very well and it's nicely lightweight for backpacking. The one issue I had is that the o-ring that seals the lid comes off too easily, and since it's stretchy it can actually rubberband itself off and be lost. This effectively means you have to throw away the mug and buy a new one, since the lid will no longer stay on or seal against spills. If GSI were to package an extra o-ring with the mug, that would be awesome. As it is, I'm buying my third one today since the first two have lost their seals. :(

Lightweight and keeps hot beverages HOT!

Best lightweight t mug for backpacking. I like to brew hot tea, so I needed something that would keep the tea hot for a long time while it steeped. This mug is amazing: it keeps my water piping hot for several minutes of brewing time, then all the way through breakfast. The titanium mugs out there are similar weight but way more expensive and don’t keep beverages hot very long, plus they’re not as comfortable to hold. Bonus: slip off the insulting sleeve and it has markings for use as measuring cup. The plastic appears to be quite durable: no chips or cracks yet. This is the best mug out there.

Good little Cup

I like the feel in my hand. The outer skin has a soft non-skid bottom and slides off for ease of cleaning. Inside cup is thin clear and can handle boiling water. The lid has a nice tight seal and wont leak if tipped over for a few seconds. Hot stays hot plenty long enough to enjoy 14/16 oz. coffee or tea. It insulates cold fine too. Alcohol doesn't seem to damage the inner cup at all. I bought this cup to replace the Sea-To-Summit Cup. They are about the same size but this cup doesn't burn my lip when drinking something hot out of it. The Seat-To-summit has a big gap that wouldn't let me seal my lip without getting burnt. 4 or 5 minutes modification time with a Dremel tool and its much better, but doesn't seal. The only thing I would change is that the outside skin absorbs water easily.

Lightweight and durable

I've had this mug for over a year. Coffee and soup stay hot. Feels good to hold this mug. And when the woven insulation started to fray a bit at the lip, I removed the cup and (carefully) used a lighter to singe and seal the thread ends. Problem solved. After reading one reviewer's comments about the o-ring I thought about how I've used my mug. I haven't had any problems with the lid seal, nor has the o-ring ever come off. I don't put the lid or the cup in the dishwasher and I do keep the seal clean (I don't find it necessary to remove the o-ring when cleaning the lid). I have noticed that it seems better to keep the flip top open when putting the lid on and taking it off to prevent putting extra pressure on the o-ring.

GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker Mug

I love this light weight mug with its large capacity as I drink a LOT of tea in the mornings before heading out on the trail. One caution though: The inner mug slips easily out of the blue (orange) insulating outer layer. I had the mug 'binered' to the outside of my pack and the inner cup slipped out when I was jumping over some rocks (probably the jolting did it). Fortunately I heard it drop and was able to retrieve the cup!! So pack your cup inside your pack for safety!!
