Kept our stuff safe from the bear's nose!
We were hiking in Colorado and our campsite didn't have a good place to hang a bear bag. We hung it, but only about 5 feet off of the ground. We were hanging food in these opsaks inside of our sleeping bag stuff sacks. Well, a bear DID come loudly sniffing and grunting around the campsite. He never even turned toward our bear sacks. I'm sure if we had just used ziplock bags he would have known where to find all of our foods. The opsak saved the trip! (Luckily he didn't bother us, either!) By the way, we used the larger bags for the food. These smaller ones were helpful for toiletries and the first aid kit...

Defective New Design
My wife and I loved the older OPSAKs that had the single seal. There was never a failure. Unfortunately, they changed the design to one that now has two seals. My wife and I purchased more than 8 of these bags for a 113.9 mi., 15-day backpacking trip and experienced problems on more than 50% of the bags with the seam between the clear plastic and the black plastic failing and blowing out just under the lower seal and this occurred in various locations along this seam on many different bags which is clearly a manufacturing issue. We were fortunate to not be in true bear country. Prior to this redesign, we NEVER experienced any issues with the OPSAK.

Poor quality control

I bought these for a mountaineering trip. I had packed two days before leaving, and the next day the trip was canceled because one member had to go to the ER. I unpacked the next day, to find that the one Loksak bag I'd used had become separated where the bag was "welded" to the green zipper. I was floored that it couldn't survive two days in my pack, sitting in the bedroom. Today I was repacking and used the second bag from the pack, which had never even been out of the package. I put my food in it, packed it, and 20 later discovered I'd forgotten to pack my instant coffee. I pulled the bag back out, and found that IN 20 MINUTES the second bag had separated. I'd even squeezed all the air out before sealing the bag. I'm so happy that I discovered it before critters smelled my food, invaded, and chewed up my supplies. To be clear, the plastic didn't tear, the weld line came apart. On brand new bags. That can only be from shoddy manufacturing and zero quality control. The cheap grocery store ziplock bags I'd used to divide meal portions are still air tight from the ORIGINAL packing 3 weeks ago. Total waste of money, and the time it'll take to return this garbage to REI.

Remember what they are

These are heavy duty locking plastic bags. As long as you remember that, then they are great. They're stronger than branded zip-style locking bags, and the seal is better. They are smell-proof as advertised, but what a lot of people seem to forget is that when one handles the bag there are now smells on the outside of the bag which, like anything else, will attract rodents and even bears, so precautions should be taken with these bags just like others. The advantage comes in with strong smelling contents such as poo. I've used these bags for foods such as oats and coffee, several times with a ratsack and have yet to lose the contents. I've also used the larger ones for a tablet, a laptop, and other electronics and they worked great. My only real issue is the cost. At five bucks a bag I could triple-up on brand name freezer bags, and have spares. But, the seal on these is what gets me coming back.

good extra odor protection

I use these bags for some toiletries that have some odor to them. They do a great job at hiding the odor, but I still take additional precautions when outdoors and hide these away from camp. I got another set to hold my empty food packages. The reason why I gave 4/5 is because the zipper area is very fragile. My first bad had so many tears above the double zippers from opening the bags and I wasn’t forceful by any means. Maybe the material got a little weaker being exposed to temp fluctuations. I will try to be more conscientious of the fragile area with my new bags.

Works Great, but a Few Crucial Flaws

I've purchased these bags a few times and they have worked as advertised, as far as I can tell. No animals have ever investigated my food stash when using these bags, whether sealed MREs or opened refuse. That said, the seals on these bags are delicate. Opening them too quickly causes the flap past the seal to peel off. This doesn't affect the efficiency of the bag, but does make it much harder to open. This has happened on numerous bags. In addition to the breakage, a few bags have had misaligned seals, so be sure to check that they seal properly before taking them out. If it wasn't for these two design flaws, I would say these bags would be decent - apart from the weak seal flap. A nice detail. however, is that the 10" x 9" bags are a perfect fit for Ursack Minor Critter Bag, even when stuffed full. Two bags hold about 5 days worth of food, including MREs for breakfast / dinner, and assorted loose snacks.

Ziplock brand are probably better

The bags themselves are thick and look very durable, but the seal sucks. I put some freeze dried food in one of the bags, and it did not stay sealed. In the end I could squeeze the bag and the remaining air escaped through the top. I wouldn't trust this on a backpack adventure or even some hiking situations. Sorry, it's just not good.

First night out rodents went right for it.

Used the Opsak on recent hike. Placed sealed Mountain Packs in the OPSAK then in the bear bag. In morning, when we retrieved the bear bag we found a rodent had chewed right thru the "odor-proof" opsak and in the seal Mountain House food packs.

keeps smelly dog waste contained!

Love these bags for day hikes. I bring one to carry my dogs waste so I, and every other hiker that walks by me, doesn’t have to smell my dogs poo! They work wonderful for this! I will agree with many others - after two years of using these bags, I have had to purchase quite a few because the seal breaks, or the plastic above the seal rips off and it becomes very difficult to open. I have used these for some car camping and yurt trips to store human food, dog food, and waste, and other than the seal issue, they have held up pretty nicely.
