Safe from raccoons in the Grand Canyons
Took this on a backpacking trip to Havasu Falls. Everyone else in our group decided to just double bag their food and hang them high in trees. The raccoons and ringtail cats didn't care and climbed the trees and ransacked their bags anyways. I brought these odor-proof bags and used one for my food and the other for my trash. Each night, I just left them either on the table or right outside my tent. Both of the bags were untouched each night. No signs of attempts at all and zero tears on the bags. I was so skeptical of these bags from reading the reviews, but I'm so glad I ignored the comments and bought this anyway!
Zipper ripped after 2 days on trail
If you want this bag to last more than a day or two, you need to handle it EXTREMELY carefully. Never tug on the zipper edge, never pull on anything, and only store soft-edged items inside. My bag developed a hole from a dehydrated meal pouch after day 1, and then the zipper edge ripped off when I opened the bag on day 2. Seeing that many people complain about the weak zipper top, I wish opsak could re-design this bag with a tougher closure. Odor proof bags are a great idea, especially to add double protection when bear-hanging, and I hope to buy again once a new sturdier bag is brought to market.
Not Durable
I brought two Opsaks for my recent 8 day GNP backpacking trip to use with my Ursack. Upon arrival, I discovered the Opsak with food in it had burst. I blamed the airline for poor handling. No big deal, I had a backup. About two days into the trip, the bag split in a straight line just below the seal. Not sure what happened. It was not overstuffed, and as an ultralight hiker, I'm incredibly gentle with my gear. So for the next six days, I went without odor protection...
Two thumbs down
These bags separated just below the ziplock seal. Very disappointing, one was being used for my food bag in a bear sack and within the first day on the trail as I reached to open the bag it failed. Best I could do it roll up the bag and hope that my food didn’t attract critters as I slept through the night. This happened on two separate bags.
Wow - works!
I had to share this story: I went on a backpacking trip at the end of September. We used Opsaks, including one for trash. Got back home, threw the contents of my backpack into an open open bin in my bedroom, forgetting about the Opsack with trash in it. FOUR MONTHS LATER, I went to pack for another trip. That bag of trash - with an apple core and used tampons in it - was in my bedroom the WHOLE TIME without me or anyone in my family even catching a whiff of anything. That's incredible! Note: If this happens to you, whatever you do, do NOT open it...if you do, the stench may not leave your nose for days. Just throw it away.
Well worth the money
I took two of these on a trip to bear country. One for trash one for food. This is gross but here goes. I got a serious case of altitude sickness. I had to choose between vomiting right outside my tent, or in my trash LOPSAK bag. I chose the bag. I was too under the weather to hang this so I took the risk of keeping it in my tent. Not only could i not smell the vomit from the bag that was literally 2 feet away, the bears most importantly could not either. Huge volume bags, waterproof, puke proof, and smell proof.
Kept odor IN & saved a $150 dog backpack
I brought this to hold food while backpacking but ended up repurposing it to hold my dog’s expensive Ruffwear Palisades Pack after she was skunked while wearing it. The pack smelled AWFUL (worse than hot rotting garbage) but I wanted to save it if possible. Emptied out, it fit into the 12x20 opsak & once sealed I could not detect any skunk odor AT ALL. Once at home, I was able to triple wash the backpack (& my dog) with a skunk-specific dog shampoo to get the terrible smell out. These bags work & saved us from having to buy another expensive dog backpack.
Both Bags Were Broken
Purchased this to provide extra protection for food during a recent backpacking trip. The first bag had one entire side that was delaminated from the zip closure right out of the package. The second bag had a 1" section of the bag that was delaminated from the zip closure right out of the package. As such, neither bag could be sealed so they were both useless at containing food odors. We didn't want pay $7 and waste more carbon emissions to send these back, so we just took the monetary loss. Really disappointed in REI for stocking such faulty products. I should have listened to the many other negative reviews. Do not depend on these to seal your food in the backcountry.
Good but not very durable
The large bags fit perfectly in the large Ursak bear bag, which is super convenient. After using the smaller bags for non-camping purposes for about 2 months and the large bags for 9 days of backcountry backpacking, I can say that while they do the trick, they aren't very durable. DO NOT OVERPACK THEM. The seams on one of the small bags ripped after I tried to close it with a little too much in it. After 9 days, the 2x large bags still seem to be airtight, but I can tell by the various scuffs and near-kinks that they probably will get holes in them on the next trip that I use them for. Ideally, I'd like to see these be more durable.
Looks great and sturdy, MAJOR design flaw
Used this for the first time on a 3 day 2 night trip in the Adirondacks. On the second day, the closure completely disconnected from the bag. It was not torn, it just cleanly disconnected which seems like faulty adhesive. The problem is, I bought this 3 months ago and never used it, so since I've owned it more than 3 months it is not able to be returned for replacement. Beware, this is an overpriced Ziploc bag. Buy a case of Ziploc for the same price and get the job done. Lets be real, there is no way this prevents bears from smelling what is inside. They know from your breath inside your sleeping bag what you ate for lunch last Tuesday. Look elsewhere.
