Excellent cooling but not without flaws

The positives: the cooling is excellent- typical Coleman Xtreme performance here. Stayed cold for three days in Southern California spring heat of highs in the 80's As long as you pack it right: ice/ice packs on top, minimal dead space, keep it in the shade, and pre-chill your items, the contents will stay cold for the advertised three days. Size is perfect for 1-2 people for a few days when you want to lug some cold items for car camping. I fit in fourteen soda cans, four bottles of beer, two 1-liter water bottles, six eggs, soy ground beef, small block of cheese, and a few candy bars plus the ice and a Yeti 2lb ice pack. Was full but not crammed and I could have fit in more. Works perfect as a seat and the cup holders do their job as well as cup holders can. Now, the negatives: The handle cracked when I was taking it out of the car while setting up camp. It wasn't overloaded- the weight wasn't extreme to match it's name, and I wasn't swinging it around. If you buy this heed my advice: grip it with both hands spaced apart making sure not to hold it from the middle of the handle. The handle didn't snap, but there was a large crack in the handle plastic and it felt like it was going to snap in two at any second. The handle was buckling at the sides while carrying any amount of loads, as well. I'd like to see either a beefed-up handle or just dedicated handle on each side like the larger coolers have. I had to return this item and unfortunately get a larger cooler because this is the best one in the under-30qt class. Coleman generally makes really solid coolers so this came as a surprise. Aside from that I have a few other nitpicks: It'd be nice to have the cup holders more towards the edge so you could sit on it and place your drink it it was well. I had to skirt the edge if I wanted to keep a can in it while using it as a seat (which it's advertised as). Also the hinge does not allow you to fully open it and pushing it back further feels as though you are going to break it. So overall: EXCELLENT cooling, fantastic size, nice price, but some serious fatal flaws in here. I hope Coleman makes a few changes because I'd gladly buy it again if the handle issue is addressed.

Pretty good, not perfect

We purchased this for a two-week road trip because of the size. We like the capacity and vertical shape as it fit nicely into the car. However, the lid will not stay open on it's own because the hinges are too stiff. We solved that by bringing the handle forward, then opening the cooler and moving the handle back against the lid to prop it open. Easier to use both hands sometimes to move things around inside. The other issue we have is that the lid fits so tightly that two hands are required to open the cooler, one hand to hold the cooler and the other to pry the lid open. It does keep ice pretty well.

Get Something Sturdier

My cooler was only about a month old when the handle cracked in the middle. It has not broken all the way through, but could at any minute. Now when I carry it, I have to grip it off-center which is awkward. It was not overloaded when it cracked. It contained mainly drinks for 2 people for a day or two: 2 juice boxes, 2 20 oz. bottles of Gatorade, 2 20 oz. bottles of water, 2 small cokes, 2 bottles of beer, a pack of jerky, and a pack of string cheese. Of course I had ice and a refreezable ice block. I plan to return it and purchase a cooler with a heavier-duty handle. I don't like how the lid won't stay up either. It smashed my granddaughter's fingers and caused tears at the pool.

good for the price

I use it for camping and fishing trip. Bought it to replace old regular Coleman cooler because wanted a little bigger cooler size and keep cool temperarure longer. This cooler met my requirements - it's a little better than old not xtreme model, it cam fit additional 6 cans of beer and it's not heavy. For the price and weight this cooler keep contents cool resonable long ( maybe 2 days when kept outside in hot weather). My only concern so far it's a handle - it seems to be too flexible and I'm not sure how long it's going to last. So far though it survived spending few night hanging from the tree branch (keep cooled safe from wildlife overnight).

Cold, Very Cold

Most of the really negative reviews are almost a year old. Maybe I bought the 2.0 version, because I found none of the problems they mentioned. I had my cooler full of frozen meals, loaded to the top with ice, I had zero problems with the handle on a two week trip. One thing I do know this cooler works better than any other cooler I have owned at keeping things cold/frozen. Please Note : opening the lid will take some effort. the fit and finish are first rate.

Handle broke

I read the first review about the handle breaking in the middle. I needed this cold one and size, so I bought one and the handle also broke in the middle from average weight lift.

breaks too easily

keeps cool like a first rate product. Box itself is well designed, and easy to load/unload. You can keep it partially open by closing the lid down with the handle blocking it. And that's a nice feature, since the handle broke in half with 10 pounds of ice in the cooler.

Handle breaks in the middle

I bought this a few months ago and have used it on two camping trips. During the first trip it held up fine but on the second, the handle broke in the middle. Other than the handle, the cooler works great.

Handle broke first time out

The handle broke the first time we used it. The cooler wasn't overloaded. I love this size and hope somebody makes a better one soon. Meanwhile, I'm glad to shop at REI where returns are easy.

Pretty good cooler with a terribly designed handle

The handle cracked right in the middle on the first trip I took it on and it was by no means overloaded. But, I really liked the size and it seemed to work pretty well so I just fixed the handle myself rather than return it. Unless you're trying to keep your feather collection cool I wouldn't buy this cooler (or just buy it and reinforce the handle with some metal strips and cordage).
