A must-have for dog owners
My husband and I bought these to make it easier to walk our dog in icy conditions. Our dog refuses to relieve himself in our yard (groan), so we have to walk him in rain, shine, or snow. My shoe size is 6.5 and I purchased these in XS, and my husband wears a size 11.5 and purchased these in XL. These shoe spikes make it so much easier to walk on slushy/frozen-over city sidewalks and streets, and I feel much more secure and balanced than I did without them. They offer great traction and grip. My one quibble is that the front straps/loops sometimes go slightly askew and don’t stay 100% aligned with the toe of my boots, but all things considered, it’s a pretty minor issue. I highly recommend these for fellow dog owners whose canines insist on walks in all types of weather. :)
Hiking with Confidence
Its a whole lot easier to hike when you don't have to be quite as careful. These nanospikes are perfect for icy snowpack. I even feel confident running the trails.
secure winter walking for aging parents
After buying a less expensive pair of yaktraks for myself, (and upon recommendation to step-up from the in-store help,) I gave NANOspikes to my aging-but-active parents for Christmas this year hoping to provide some extra stability during their daily errands and dog walks in our Minnesota winters. Just 2 nights after receiving them, a storm glazed their neighborhood with a 1/4" of ice, making simple excursions outdoors treacherous. However, I woke up to a text and photos from my mom: "These Nanospikes are amazing on glare ice! ... we're the only ones in the neighborhood who are actually able to read the paper with our morning coffee." They said they fit great and mom enjoys the popping sound under her feet as she walks. They are both "thrilled" with the product. Put a smile on my face all day.
Just ok, moves around on my shoe
Pros: - They provide traction for icy conditions but not so much with snowy conditions. - Easy to put on Cons: - These spikes would be great if a) they rubbery part wasn't so pliant b) they didn't have that strange extra strip of rubber spanning the toe. a) As I'm running the the spikes slide around around the toe area so that they are no longer centered, crushing my toe. b) As this moves, the rubbery strip at spanning the toe sometimes rotates, crushing my toes further. I have tried to pull the spikes on as much as possible on my shoes so as to minimize the movement, but it always goes back. In Summary: Better than nothing. If you are trail running on varied terrain that includes snow and mud, get something with better traction and fit.
Amazing, Making Snowy/Icy Runs Possible
After some snow at the beginning of January, I decided to get some nanospikes for my morning runs. Sidewalks don't get shoveled here, and I found myself slipping quite a bit. Unfortunately, most spikes were out of stock, but I found these and I'm so glad I did because they have been amazing. I have run about 20 miles on them so far, in wet snow, powdery snow, and on ice. They're holding up incredibly well and have made these runs possible. They seem to be performing better than the reviews on some of the spikes that were recommended to me.
Just what I was looking for
These NANOspikes keep your feet closer to the ground and do not feel as much like you have Lego blocks stuck to your feet compared to other solutions. I wear a men's 10.5 shoe and the large fits pretty well. The front portion tends to ride up on the toe and not stay on the bottom of the shoe. Therefore, the front two spikes never come into contact with the ground. I've tried every adjustment I can think of to make sure all the spikes stay under the shoe... not happening. The large would probably be a perfect size for a 11 or possibly an 11.5 shoe. The most important thing is they are the lowest profile traction devices I've found and they work like magic in solid, clear ice. I would definitely buy them again.
The best I've tried for winter running
Admittedly, running is best on dry pavement without having to have anything extra on your feet, but having a pair of these in my bag-of-options often means the difference between no-I-can't-run-today and yes-I-can. They're great on ice or hard-packed snow, not too bad on bare pavement for short distances. They are low-profile enough to allow for a natural stride. They are easy to put on and take off and small enough to take along in a small pack or even a pocket. If you don't like to have to skip runs because of bad conditions, get a pair!
Good but could be improved.
I bought these by mistake. Thought I ordered the Microspikes and was surprised when these Nanospikes showed up, but gave them a try anyway. The good: they are easy to put on and stay on my boots; good traction on flat ice and snow; comfortable to wear, even on long hikes. Needs improvement: need more nubs for better traction, even if the additional nubs don't have the metal spikes in them; slides on inclines made of packed ice and snow because the flat surface that covers the sole is too slippery. The description says they are for flat terrain so at least they are honest about what they are good for. But with a few more nubs for better traction on hills, these would be more versatile.
Highly Recommend
I bought these one year ago from REI at the beginning of a terrible, icy, not very running-friendly winter in Alaska. The coil style traction devices I was trying to run in weren't cutting it and I was sick of falling! These made a HUGE difference. I am able to maintain a natural running stride on ice, snow, dirt, and sections of dry pavement. They also pack into a compact little carrying case, easy to stash in my hydration pack for long runs of varying conditions. After 3 months of winter training for an ultra, I have noticed no wear and tear. Depending on my shoe choice, sometimes the toe piece will create some uncomfortable pressure on my big toe, or creep over and become cockeyed, so I gave 4 stars, but not enough of an issue for me to consider other traction devices.
Complete game changer!
We had unusually cold temperatures recently, keeping snow and ice around longer than usual. I don’t have the best balance, and have a dog that while usually good on leash, will occasionally pull. Combined with our steep Seattle hills, I’ve never felt confident going out for more than a very short, timid dog walk. Yesterday I walked 7 miles through snow and icy sidewalks; up and down hills with complete confidence. They’re low profile so no problem walking on bare pavement. I passed by many people tiptoeing around the ice. I only wish I’d discovered these years ago!
