Good product
I used the Revo Explore Flotation Tails for the 1st time yesterday and they worked great. Conditions varied from steep up and downhills, a couple small creek crossings and some tricky downfall maneuvering and never had a problem with them coming off. I’ve read the other reviews about them coming off and quite frankly I’m not sure how it would happen if they are put on correctly. It takes a little practice time putting them on (maybe 5 minutes worth) but once you get the knack of getting the pins into the predrilled holes it’s a piece of cake. I would highly recommend these if you are planning any off trail excursions.
35 sq. in. extra floatation but at what cost?
Received an installed MSR Revo tails for Revo ascent snow shoes. Installation was straightforward and now the only question that remains is how do they perform. Good question which we hope to answer shortly. At $65 for the pair and an approximate 35 in.² area Added to the snowshoe wondering if there will be enough improved performance to justify the cost. Other reviewers say yes, well yet other reviewers say no, so it appears to be quite subjective.
Constantly Losing Tails
I really liked the Revo Ascent Snowshoes themselves. Great traction and heel lift bar. Unfortunately, I was constantly turning around to make sure I didn't lose the tails! I gave these a real solid go, tried them on two different winter 14er ascents before finally giving up and returning the snowshoes and tails. I can't even count how many times I lost both tails. It was quite frustrating! I truly believe I was attaching them properly. It seems like this is a common problem that will hopefully be addressed in the future.
Lost one too!
LIke the previous reviewer, I lost one tail about 100' into my first hike. Granted, it was in about 20" of powder and I did not notice it missing til a quarter mile in. I know that these are NOT the ideal shoes for powder. In fact I think that was the reason I didn't miss it. I retraced my tracks and found the tail and did note that one of the spring steel pin/clip rails was bent outward. I bent it inward a bit and checked the other tail. I have not lost it after trekking through deep powder again.
Helps a little but not enough to justify purchase
I like these tails and once I figured out how to snap them in place, it’s easy to put them on - before starting your hike, but not sure it would be easy if I put them on while out in the snow and with gloves on. I was disappointed in how little difference the tails make because I was still dropping almost knee deep in fluffy dry snow and I’m average weight. I never had any issues with them falling off like some others mention in reviews. I honestly think they must not have snapped them under the lip because once mine are snapped into place, they aren’t coming off until I forced them off. The unsnapping part is a bit more difficult than putting them on. I would not buy these again, sorry to say.
Good floatation
Nice added floatation to my snowshoes for backpacking. I'm not sure if people were reviewing an old version of these or using it with older snowshoes, but those tails are really tough to get off and I don't see any way of them falling off. For reference, my snowshoes are the newer model that I got in 2019.
More than useless, but not by a lot.
These things are ok, they're more than useless. I am overall not happy with the MSR snowshoes, but these tails are about the only reason I keep the things. It's nice to travel with 22" shoes, or keep them small when snow is decently packed. If I'm on fresh powder, I definitely add the tails and have noticed SOME benefit. It's not mind blowing, and a slog in the snow is still a slog. In fact, having more length made it worse in some cases. You definitely need good planning for any winter gear, but even more so with these shoes.
Are you putting them on correctly?
On REVO EXPLORERS - The instructions say the pins should be below the deck. Well, on mine the pins go into predrilled holes in the deck frame. With the pins in those holes I don't see how they could drop off. It took awhile to figure this out. The instructions are simply wrong. Even the video on Utube is wrong as least as far as the snowshoes I bought last winter. If you have a problem call MSR. They'll want to do the right thing...
So happy with these!
My husband and I both got pairs of 25in. Revo ascent's and broke em out after a big snowstorm in Tahoe. They handled great in over 2ft of fresh pow with the 5in. tails we got for them. We plowed fresh tracks and had so much fun. Very happy we chose these snowshoes. The strap type was the deciding factor. I really love how secure they feel on your feet without any hotspots the way it hugs the top of your foot evenly. Big thumbs up!
Mt. Shasta hike
I bought these extensions to help out with my heavy backpack during my Mt. Shasta hike this summer
