Compact for storage Compact for storage
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Yakima RidgeBack Tilt Away Hitch Bike Rack was lightweight and compact. The bike rack came fully assembled with easy mounting instructions. I found the zip strips convenient and very easy to lock bikes on rack. Having the tilt feature, made it easy to access the hatchback of my expedition and my tailgate of my pick up truck. I did however, have an issue with a 2 1/2 inch receiver. I was not able to get the locking pin all the way through to the other side(it was secured, just not all the way through) also the only other negative I could find was YAKIMA sticker was already falling off and probably would not last. All in all the bike rack worked and did it purpose by carrying my bikes I would recommend this product if you're looking for a lightweight easy to use bike rack,

Worst bike rack ever
Do not buy this bike rack! I purchased this worthless rack of metal on July 11 and on July 24th (yes 13 days later) the rack collapsed at the tail hitch me causing me to lose four bikes as all four of them were shredded to pieces as they dragged on the road after collapse. Everything was installed properly and tasted correctly. The rack just failed and now I’ve had to spend over 10 hours dealing with REI and Yakima trying to get coverage for my bikes and money spent on the racks. $4000 claim here. Ugh
Works great
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was able to install them on my wife’s car onto her hitch with no problems. I was unsure if I would be able to do it as I’ve never attached anything to the hitch. Once attached it seems very secure which was rather surprising to me. She has no problem opening up her trunk with the bike rack since it can fold out of the way. We go camping and bring the kids bikes usually in the back of my pick up truck but my wife can now enjoy her car and not give up any space in her vehicle if she needs to bring bikes. This is a quality product and so far I am very happy with it. Went up north this weekend and drove over 400 miles (back and forth) on the highway with no issues whatsoever. Great product!

Solid rack
I have had this rack now on 2 different cars and it has traveled hundreds and hundreds of miles without a problem. So the trick for smaller bikes or full suspension bikes is that you are likely going to have to purchase the loading bars Yakima makes, I know that stinks, but its the best way to load 4 full suspension/ small bikes. I raise the seat prior to loading on the smallest bike to give it clearance for the loading bar. Once you do that I have gotten my XL full suspension 29-er, a large full suspension 27.5, a medium full suspension 26, and a extra small 26" hard tail on without any problem and driven over 1000 miles.
Ok for short trips - not sure about 4 bikes
As has been written in several reviews, fitting 4 bikes on this rack seems unlikely. We have two bikes for adults and my 8 year old sons mountain bike and it seems that a 4th would be nearly impossible. I've also found a significant amount of bounce when going over any bumps on the road which is a bit scary when on the freeway watching $2000 worth of bikes bouncing in your rear view mirror. That said, it is easy for loading up one or two bikes for a ride nearby which is what I really bought it for. If you're looking for a rack to keep your bikes secure for a long trip and maybe includes some locking mechanisms, I'd find another (more expensive) rack.
Mediocre Bike rack for almost $400
Purchased this 4-bike rack from local store after spending few days reading reviews on REI and Amazon. PROS: Bike Rack comes fully assembled (1) and plastic straps holding bikes really well (2). CONS: Very Heavy rack, My wife could not deal it. Even for me that wan no fun to deal with (1). When installed and locked with the key, it wobbles pretty bad in the hitch, that didn't make me feel safe at all (2). While unlocking was easy, lock hitch assembly fell out as it get disconnected from the hitch insert. Also, when I pull the rack out of the hitch, bottom plastic handle just fell off (1). Nor sure if my rack was a lemon, but it is going back to the store.
Doesn't Really Fit Four Bikes
We are a family of four. Our youngest is a newer bike rider, so we finally have need for a rack that will fit four bikes. We have two full-size adult bikes, one smaller sized adult bike for a teenager, and one child sized bike for an 8-year-old. No matter how hard we tried, we could not make all four bikes fit on this rack. Three, no problem, but even with one of our bikes being sort of small, and one being really small, we couldn't make all four fit. It was too much of a hassle for me to get the rack back to the store, so we're keeping it. Other than not fitting all four bikes, it really is an excellent, easy to use, super solid rack. Just wish it lived up to its billing as a four-bike rack
Great for up to 3 bikes, 4 is a challenge.
I've had my Yakima Ridgeback 4 bike rack about 5 years and I still like it. You have to take the time to understand how to install it and remove it from your hitch receiver. You also need to secure it with the pin provided. It is tough to fit four bikes on it, the handlebars, pedals, etc. can interfere w each other. Overall I have found this rack to be awesome if I have up to 3 bikes loaded on it. I've done many long highway trips with it and never had any issues.
So easy to use
Let's get one thing out of the way: this is a four bicycle carrier like my tent sleeps four. Sure, it might be possible with a bunch of skinny bikes, but my families bikes are a bit bigger so I've only tried three. It took longer to get the RidgeBack out of the box than it did to get it on my car. After that it was a few more minutes to install the Handcuff (for a bit of security from the casual thief) and then I loaded the bikes and was done. Loading up since then has only gotten faster as I've figured out exactly where I want to strap the wheels.
Worth the $
Almost had to laugh at the reviews saying "too heavy for my wife to install". I am a very average female and had no issues installing. Very easy to line up the hitch and tighten. I constantly take on and off and it gets easier every time. My fat bike easily fits though the horizontal bars though the actual cradles are a bit rocky as I have some knobs that stick out on my frame right in those areas. Even with the tightening straps and wheel stabilizing straps the bike wobbles. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars. That being said I have no issues with it driving, the rack is secure and I've traveled a few hundred miles so far with it on the back of my 4runner, some on dirt some on snow, without any issues. Really glad I shelled out the $$ for this one. Worth it.
