For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

I just got back from walking the Camino de Santiago, this is a 500 mile walk. These shoes worked perfectly! These shoes were recommended to me by Dan the shoe man at Sacramento REI. The only problem is that REI doesn't carry the Women's Wildcat in the store. So you are kind of guessing on the size when you order them. You see so many people in boots, with blisters and the ones that seemed to have the least problems were is lower shoes, non gortex. You do see a lot of the big heavy boots, but they are not needed. I loved these trail runners. They worked perfect on all terrain. I just wish REI carried them in the store.
I really like these shoes. They have a great wide toe box, which I like a lot. The traction is great too! On day hikes and short trips they have been super comfortable. I then wore these on a longer trip and my achilles started bothering me a lot, which has never happened to me before. I did notice, even on shorter trips, that there isn't great arch/heel support, but it didn't bother me until I had an overnight pack and was doing major mileage. I'm going to try inserts in these shoes and I think that'll solve the problem! Just know they don't have excellent support on their own, though the structure of the shoe is nice and comfortable and they breathe well.
REI did not have these available to try on so I took a chance and bought them online. I was expecting them to be exactly the same as the men's version which I bought last year and loved but the smallest size available was about a half size too big for me. These are not the same as the men's shoe at all. They are wider, the tongue is stiff, and the rubber on the toe offers much less protection. The stiff tongue hurts the top of my toes and I don't like not having as much protection for my toes. I REALLY wish they would take the men's version and just make it in smaller sizes for women.
These are my favorite trail running shoes. I am on my 4th pair. I usually get around 300 miles ofwear on them before switching to a ew pair. Then I use the old pair for horse chores since they have a lot of wear left. They have a great grip on rugged trails, large toe box, great arch support, and general over all stability. No PF issues with these shoes. Great for rocky trails. I highly recommend.
after trying different styles, women's wildcat won my feet over. i run on the balls of my feet, and love to hike short and long trails. having a neuroma in one foot causes annoying pain with narrow shoes. i usually wear a 7 and got these in a 7.5 to give my toes toes enough to room when running/hiking down hill. these fit just right! not too "flexi-bendy" like a regular running sneaker nor too "stiff" like an approach shoe. good enough grip/stick sole. i got them on friday and wore them on a 15mile up/down hill/scrambling hike. EXTREMELY happy feet during and after:)
I looked for shoes to wear on the Camino Santiago. I have narrow heels, collapsed arches and wide toe box and prone to blisters. I came TO REI and got an excellent t salesman who helped me find the right shoe for me. Tried on many styles but settled on the Wildcats for my 500 mile walk on the Camino Francis. Based on suggestion of the salesman I bought a size and a half larger than my regular shoes which served me well on the Camino. I also added an insole to combat plantar fasciitis. I walked the Camino and had no foot injuries or blisters. They were great on steep trails and were so comfortable. I wore them over 500 miles and I can still wear them. The mesh material helps them to breath and when they get wet they dry quickly. Best shoes I've ever had.
I've been struggling with buying my first pair of trail running shoes. I got directed to the real highly padded ones at first (like the Hokas) and it just wasn't working for me. I realized that really want I needed was just a running shoe that was a little burlier than normal, and that's exactly what this is. It isn't waterproof (would be too hot) and the upper really does look and feel like an old worn in pair of tennis shoes. The tread however is very sturdy had has lugs that actually feel sticky on rocks. They give me a lot more confidence when running the downhill sections of my trail run because I don't feel like I'll slip. The other nice think about these verse other more rugged trail running shoes is that you *can* run with these on pavement. The trail run I typically do is about 4 miles, with about .75 of a mile at the end on a paved trail. I didn't want a shoe that would make me miserable running on pavement, and these did great. Size-wise they fit me great, but I have wide feet. The toe box is actually a little wider than I expected it to be, which is awesome for me but may spell trouble for those with narrow feet. Overall I really like these. I've had no foot problems since I've started running in them, and I feel a lot more confident on rocky trail.
I just came back from 2 week long 180-mile backpacking on PCT in high Sierra. I have small but very flat and wide feet so choosing shoes is always a challenge. I like Salomon shoes but it hurts my feet as it doesn't offer wide option for women's size 6.5. It'll take me a LONG TIME to stretch till I feel comfortable. This shoes provided room to expend for my wide feet as it is all mesh and it was comfortable from the beginning. I was worried about durability and support for steep downhill but I decided to give it a try after testing 20 mile hike without any problem. It performed very well. It was comfortable for my wide feet and it gripped rocks fine (this was my concern as I saw others complaining). Except.... it started to fall a part pretty fast. Front part where it is glued was lifting up and I was worried if I have to find super glue in the mountains. On the steep rocky downhill, I kept tightening up my shoe lace but it jammed my toes. It just didn't feel like it had good support on the steep downhill. It dried pretty fast in the sun but we were in the snow melting area so my feet with blisters stayed wet for few days straight and it didn't give my blisters chance to heal. I missed my hiking boots. I chose this shoes for PCT hike as it was recommended by REI sales rep but maybe it is not as durable as it should be for rough terrain..... I would buy it again for local day hikes as it is comfortable and light. If you are going to use it for trail running shoes around town, this shoes should work fine for you.
I love the way these shoes are made and how they seem as if they'll grip really well on different kinds of terrain. The only problem is that it runs very, very small. My regular street shoe size is an 8. I tried a 9.5 (EU41) and my toes were touching the very end. I've ordered the next size up and am hoping they'll fit, because it seems to be the largest size REI carries.
I purchased these shoes for rugged trail running, and they are the slipperiest trail shoes I've ever worn. I slide on all smooth rocky surfaces, and they don't perform much better on loose gravel. The traction is terrible. Although they're comfortable right out of the box, and they have a wide toe box for those that need it, they simply are not designed for rugged trail running. I spend a minimum of 5 miles a day on rugged trails, and these shoes have not performed well. I've almost injured myself on numerous occasions because the traction is so terrible. I've attempted to wear them on 5+ mile hikes for the last 10 consecutive days and will need to retire them for my protection. They also do poorly on tile/smooth surfaces. They do not live up to the advertised description. This it the first La Sportiva model that I haven't enjoyed simply because it's not designed for what it says the shoe is designed for.
