Disappointed in the quality of the flip cap :(
I have now gone through two of these caps in a matter of months. Both have chipped where the lid closes and the newer cap (green in pictures; new at Christmas) also broke on top. This is with normal use just bringing the water bottle to and from school. I hope Hydro Flask can improve these caps. For now I’ll look for a replacement (but I don’t see good colors for sale anymore!)
Really annoying
If I have even the slightest amount of liquid in the top at all, it immediately leaks out the back of the flippy part. Sometimes it even leaks out the front randomly when I’m drinking. Not good for travel. My white bag is now brown, and I am very careful. Just don’t know how it happens. Keep in mind I take great care of my HydroFlasks and have never even machine washed the lid. I would definitely not buy this lid and purchase the other type if I had a choice back then. Too bad. Maybe I will before I go on an international trip, because I cannot deal with this on an airplane.
A great addition for the Hydro Flask
I have been using this since I bought my Hydro Flask and I think it is a great addition. My only qualm with this is that it does leak some and it does sweat some compared to the bottle that doesn't sweat at all. That said I till like the product allot and the convenience it offers compared to having to unscrew the cap each time. I use mine every day, and I use it allot. It goes in the car, to the office, on the boat, and on the night stand. If they could make the two problems I mentioned better it would be a 5 star product for me.
Please
After reading the review about the hole being too close, I revised the way I was drinking, ie tip the bottle less. This modification has helped somewhat with the problem of actually getting a drink. Not sure if that second hole is too small or what the issue is, but when I want a drink, I don't generally want a sip, but a real swallow. Ditto to the dribble problem others mentioned. I've only had it a few weeks, and LOVE the flask, so I was thinking I might see if other brand caps thread the same so I can replace. But, y'know, they should just fix this issue. I'd pay another $5 even though really it's a design flaw.
Unfortunate disappointment
I use my hydro flask for both water and tea. I have a standard 21oz and recently I bought a wide mouth so I could have a drinkable lid but I gave up on this lid yesterday. It will dribble on you and splash you with what ever contents you are drinking. Every drink I take results in bottle contents puddling in drinking area. I end up splashing myself and anyone in close proximity when I snapped the lid closed and if I tipped the bottle it would dribble down the side of the bottle and onto my hand/pants/floor. Not a big deal when its water but frustrating when its tea.
Messy Lid
This lid was the standard for the product I believe at the time of purchase, however it has a couple of shortcomings which make it a poor product and I would never recommend it. The breather hole plug protrudes slightly about 1/8" and is inconveniently placed such that it will touch your nose when the bottle is elevated to drink. This leaves me with a coffee drop on my nose about 80% of the time. The second problem is with the closing and opening. The close is a nice tight seal which indeed keeps the coffee nice and warm for several hours. Some times, upon opening however, you will be splashed with coffee if you closed the lid after drinking with a coffee bubble there. Do not close the lid with a coffee bubble. You have been warned.
Good addition to a great bottle
This cap is a good accessory to the Hydro Flask. It's handy to use when I'll put coffee in it, but also for juice, milk, or even water or soda. My only complain is that the lid only smells like coffee now, so if I'm drinking juice but smelling coffee, it's a little weird. I haven't tried to get the odor out yet, but I might try. The lid seals completely, so I don't have to worry about it spilling or leaking out like other coffee lids. Another thing is that I don't think it insulates as well as the screw cap lid it comes with. This is okay, since I only use the lid during the day. It's important to remember to use the screw on lid if I want it to stay hot/cold overnight. Overall, I'm happy with this addition to my Hydro Flask.
Excellent lid for daily use
I've had this lid for about a year now, & love it. Have not had any leaks - even when shaking the bottle upside down! It also does a great job of retaining heat. In fact, about 2 hours ago I made tea in my Hydro Flask, left the flip cap open, and it is still piping hot (just barely drinkable temp). My only (very minor) gripe is that the plastic does retain certain smells (coffee), but that is to be expected with any plastic. And smells are easily eliminated by soaking the lid in vinegar or vinegar & baking soda. Same can be done with the bottle if a beverage was left sitting around too long. I love that the drink opening is a sufficient diameter to accommodate a reusable straw, and plan to purchase a silicone straw to use for smoothies.
Terrible lid
Couple of problems with this lid. First, the air hole is too close to where the fluid comes out. So when the bottle is near full, each pour causes fluid to get trapped in that hole and you can't drink. I find myself constantly blowing coffee out of that hole just to drink it properly. Another thing (someone else mentioned it) is that fluid gets caught under the snap cap when it's in the open position, which causes it to drip down the other side. This is no minor issue..... this is majorly annoying! Just walking from my car to my lab, and my hand is drenched with coffee. Unless you consciously keep your bottle tilted toward you to prevent this, it will happen a lot! And leaving coffee rings all over your desk is no fun either. And be careful, that gasket falls out easily when you unscrew the lid from the bottle.
Works on Kleen Canteen Too
I bought this 3 months ago for my Kleen Canteen widemouth, because their top is pretty poor. Has worked great, no spills and keeps everything hot or cold. Only complaint is that sometimes while open and you set down in the car, a bump will cause liquid to get undedr the folded back stopper, and then it will dribble down the side a little--very minor issue.
