Awesome!

Awesome! I used this bag as my only luggage on a nine day trip to Peru. The trip included ten flight legs, two train rides, and a couple of hikes. While in the airports I stowed the shoulder straps and used the built in carrying handles, bag easily fits into the overhead compartments. Includes a padded storage compartment for electronics and interior stayed dry in a slight drizzle. Well made, bag still looks new.

This bag holds a lot and is lightweight!

Got this bag to take with me on my travel adventures. Did a lot of research, tried out numerous bags, and decided the Osprey Farpoint 40 was the closest match to what I needed: a lightweight, roomy backpack style bag that would hold everything I could possibly stuff in it, yet still look sleek and most importantly, be small enough to use as a carry-on. Took it on its maiden voyage to Fairbanks, Alaska recently, and it far exceeded my expectations! I even got numerous compliments on my ability to travel light, something this girl has never been told! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish it had a few more interior pockets, and pockets on the waiststrap. And there wasn't an option to give it 4.5, which it totally deserves. Can't wait to take it out on its next adventure!

Carry On - Always Fits

Must get the NEW MODEL - with a shoulder strap. Which is great for carrying around the airport once you are there or for into your hotel. You should never have to gate check again. I can always find a place to put it. The I have fit on the smaller bins of plans, sideways, and even on top/below a brief case. Only downside is also nice feature to it. It opens like a suitcase. No stuffing, but sometimes (with out other packing tools like cubes) without having higher harder sidewalls it is hard to fully pack loose items. I bought the bag after I busted up my default wheeled carry-on and have not looked back. It is faster and easier to manage pack in an airport, and I love I can hide away the straps for easy stowing. I have already used it on 4+ trips. Usually use for 3-4 day trips for business. Not for the heavy packers - if you already have trouble with a normal carry-on do not buy this. Note: Both Osprey/REI have not done a good job on there sites/pictures/descriptions to advertise the fact there is a new model. At the time of purchase they are marked as the same model in the REI stock.

Great travel bag for light travelers

This bag replaced a 14-year-old Eagle Creek convertible pack. I wanted something with better organization, better structure, and better shoulder and waist straps. It still needed to be carry-on size and have comparable longevity. On the plus side, the Osprey is very comfortable when converted to a backpack. The internal frame gives the pack good structure and is easy to wear. It has sufficient room for a week's worth of clothing plus my laptop, charger, camera, and extra lens. Inner and outer compression straps help keep things in place. That being said, I'm a light packers so your mileage may vary. When not in use, the shoulder and waist straps hide behind a zippered cover making it quick to take out and put away. Handles on the side and top as well as a shoulder strap make it easy to manage when moving the luggage in and out of overhead compartments, trunks, etc. There is a small pocked on the top with a key ring and sufficient space to hold your cell phone, passport, and wallet. I prefer bags that come in colors other than black to make it easy for me to pick out my bag at the airport. There are two minor downsides. First, due to its shape, the pack won't stand upright and has trouble sitting on its side. Usually it will flop over flat when placed on the ground. Second, the laptop sleeve is well padded but located on the outside of the pack. I understand this is to make it more convenient to access your laptop when moving through security, but it throws off the balance of the pack. This is not unique to this Osprey pack, similar packs from North Face, REI, and Eagle Creek all had a similar location. When wearing the pack for a longer time, I had to repack the laptop in the main compartment to distribute the weight better. FYI, my laptop is 14" and weighs a little less than 5 lbs. If you plan on using the shoulder strap, you may wish to purchase a padded one - the included strap is not padded. The fabric and zippers seem sturdy and rugged. I can't comment on its water resistance since I did not spend time out in the rain. It does not come with a rain cover like the comparable REI pack. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase thus far.

Great Travel Pack

Used it on a two week trip to Europe earlier this year. Plenty of room in the main compartment and the second large pocket is very useful for a laptop or tablet as well as a couple of paperbacks. The small outside pocket is a handy place to store maps, tickets, etc.

Awesome bag, close to perfect

I was in the market looking for a bag that didn't make me look like a backpacker while I was in New York City. I wanted a bag with a slim profile and for the bag not to go beyond the height of my shoulders. This bag was going to be my primary bag, as I hate carrying a lot of stuff and I want to carry-on everything while not having to deal with luggage with wheels. This bag is lightweight and roomy on the inside. I was able to fit a week's worth of stuff in this bag due to awesome compression straps. The backpack straps can be hidden with the zippered flap, giving you a more professional look, carrying a messenger bag. Match all this great stuff with REI satisfaction guarantee and Osprey's Warranty/Repair program, this thing is a great bag. Now for the negatives (things I wish they change in the future): (1) REI please carry the black version. Blue is ok. Black is better. I rather buy from you than any other online retailer. (2) Hip belt. I wish I could tuck them away if I didn't need them. (3) More organization. Pen holders in the media section would be nice. and I'd gladly trade the mesh pockets in front for a couple hidden pockets instead. All in all. a great bag. The minute REI sells this in black, the blue one I have goes to one of my sons.

I returned this pack

I returned the pack. I thought it was too small for 40 liters. I also own an Osprey Farpoint 55 M/L that I think is the best. I ordered this pack because I wanted a smaller bag I could carry on but this 40 liters does not pack as well as the 40 liters in my Farpoint 55 M/L without the day bag zipped on. So...I now use the Farpoint 55 and zip the day bag inside. I can't carry it on a plane, but the roominess of the body 40 liters is great.

Isn't just right for what I wanted it fo

I got this pack to carry to work every day. It is too tall and narrow. The zippers don't open enough to give good access to the bottom part of the backpack. It might be fine for travel, but not good for every day use. It's a good pack, very well made, but think twice if you want to use this every day.
