All Purpose
The beauty of this jacket is that it can be with you at all times. It folds into it's own pocket to a size that keeps it from being a burden to carry around. I use one of those hiking clips and just clip it to my belt loop when not in use. Regarding the size, I"m 5'9, 154 lbs and bought a medium which fits great. Normally, Patagonia products run a little large on me. To compare, I have the Hooded Down Sweater in a small and that fits perfectly. By perfectly, I mean more of a slim fit. I've been hiking with this jacket and it works great keeping out light wet weather and wind. The ventilation could be a little better but for what it does, it's a fantastic product.
Great Jacket, worth every dollar!
I bought this coat yesterday (Oct 5th) thinking that it'd be perfect for the fall weather here in Middle Tennessee. Lo and behold, after weeks of sunny, 90 degree days, I woke up this morning to find that it was 60 and drizzling...perfect weather to try my new coat out in. I set out on a 7-mile run and this jacket kept me dry and warm. It fits perfectly and the hood is well-designed, with an elastic band that fits around the base of the skull and keeps it in place without excessive movement. I'm looking forward to wearing this jacket on more runs and hikes as the weather gets colder and wetter.
Great ultra-lightweight wind jacket
A good friend showed me the advantage of having an ultra-lightweight windshirt: it's small enough to clip to your harness when out rock climbing. I found this Houdini Jacket at REI and decided to give it a try. It works great. Small enough to take anywhere, the fit is just right. My only complaint is that the pocket which is designed to hold the jacket when stuffed is a little on the small side and I must be careful when stuffing the jacket into the pocket if I hope to actually zip the pocket shut. I have seen other Houdini jackets which stuff into their pockets more easily. Note on fit: I usually wear a size L in Patagonia tops: R1, Simple Guide Jacket, Troposhere Jacket, etc. In this case I bought size XL and I like the fit.
Excellent
This is the shirt that blocks the wind, yet is very breathable This is the shirt you would like to wear when it is a little chilly in the morning and then put in the backpack when it is warm in the afternoon. I either wear it or put in my backpack on the way to and from work. This is the shirt you would barely notice it is weight, yet good looking ( I like the blue glass color: perfect color to wear this thing to work). This is the shirt that will run a little small, so order one size up especially if you would like to layer something for cold days. Highly recommended. It is a piece of art.
Quite impressed
I bought this jacket off the outlet because I was looking for a lightweight jacket I could use for backpacking, hiking, and my school commute when my thick rainshell was unnecessary and cumbersome. I was skeptical how the jacket would perform due to its thickness, but I was looking for something compact and that's exactly what I got! The packed size is perfect for stuffing in a water bottle pocket, large saddlebag, or another jacket pocket. On my daily bike commute, this jacket is perfect. I ride about 3 miles in the PNW where rain and wind are almost constant 10 months out of the year, but not too extreme. As expected, the jacket holds up just fine against mist and light rain, but I was impressed that it even kept me dry in a sudden downpour one evening. The material gets a bit clammy over exposed skin, but over layers there isn't much issue with condensation. I have yet to bring it on any strenuous activities, but I would expect it to work just fine. The chest pocket zipper could get in the way of a backpack strap, but it fits loosely enough that you can get around it. My only qualm is that the material is so thin that I'm afraid to rip it every time I touch it. So far its held up to everyday use, but I imagine a twig snag in the backcountry would make the Houdini do a vanishing act from my gear quiver.
Perfect for your pack
I bought this to throw in my pack for a lightweight wind shell. It serves that purpose perfectly. It is typical high quality Patagonia construction. I like how small it packs down. But that is my only complaint. The chest pocket that is packs into is small and it is quite difficult to pack it into that tiny pocket. When you do you have a nice small light item, but it will take some squeezing to get it in there. In my case it won't go back in that tiny pocket until I get home.
Great lightweight packable
I purchased mainly because I needed something for a morning hike with possible light rain. Obviously not intended for more than mild rain but it was light, packable, held body insulation well for the temp (avg temp currently where I love this season is 45-60 in the am hours). It's also great for just throwing over a tshirt and heading out the door. Probably susceptible to tears but I have had for 4 months, stored in the truck and pack and have not encountered any issues. The hood seems large at first but after you zip all the way up its nice and snug. Overall for the price and intended use it is a great buy.
If you want this, don't hesitate
The Houdini is amazing. I was going back and forth between the Arc'Teryx Squamish hoodie and went for the Houdini obviously. Its super SUPER light weight and packs down to nothing. It kept me warm in 40deg with just a long sleeve under. Completely blocks out wind. The hood fits snug and the waist draw cord works perfectly. I use this for approaches and climbs. By far the best climbing jacket I have.
What a versatile piece!
I use this for almost all activities. It packs up so small that there's no reason not to bring it along for hiking or anything outdoors. For skiing, it's my extra insulation layer for my fleece, so my fleece becomes a mid-layer, insulated, wind-resistant, highly breathable jacket. If it's really cold during skiing, I wear an insulating hoodie and I use the Houdini hoodie to give my head wind protection. These hoodies both fit under my ski helmet. I layer this under my waterproof/breathable shell. I never feel clammy! I've thought about. Polartec Alpha jackets, but I don't really need Alpha with this kind layering, which is much more versatile. If I don't need the extra layer, it packs up in my ski jacket with hardly any weight and taking up any room...love it!
The Best!!!
I use the product to the gym; walking early morning and running. Great: great colors; nice fit and just overall simple but it works.
