Impressive lock

i bought this product online and i was doing extensive research before buying. When i got it in the mail i was impressed by the weight of this little lock and i did like the anti theft warranty. the only thing is that its small its very small the width of the u lock is 8cm and the space is 15cm which is very small. its a good size if you only want to keep the frame secured but what about the wheels? i bought another lock when i need to be out for more then a couple hours, you can use a cable for the wheels but i still think that the ny standard by kryptonite is big enough for the wheels and the frame and its almost the same thickness so in short this lock is great but the hard to find space to lock it into place.

Binds up and won't unlock

Key turns fine but the lock itself has become difficult to release. Problem has grown worse over time and I could see the inside had rusted. Another commuter in my office building has the same problem with his "New York" lock. I threw mine away yesterday less than a year after purchase because I nearly had to go get tools to free it. I have several other Kryptonite locks and none of them have this issue. Problem is specific the "New York" lock design. I suspect those who have given this lock better reviews either haven't had it long, don't commute daily, or live somewhere with little precipitation. Choose another model from Kryptonite's normally excellent line.

This lock is an impressive hunk of metal - totally beefy. This is the lock for you if you live in an area where bike theft is a real concern. Like thiefs running around with car jacks popping locks. For most cyclists this lock is serious overkill. But its great piece of mind. It is a bit short, for a reason. That reduces the space to get in a crowbar, jack, or other piece of leverage. Yes, it makes it hard, often impossible, to lock your tire along with the frame. GET LOCKING SKEWERS. Or a cable to thread through the tires. This massive beast can be unruly to carry. I don't like it in my pack. My method of choice is in my belt. Slip it in and go. Rides nice back on my hip. Much better then against my back. This lock will protect your bike.

Solid, but too short

Great lock, I certainly feel secure, leaving my bike locked with this. The down side is that it's often too short to work with whatever I have to lock the bike on. This is especially troublesome in NYC, where there is a plethora of bikes, and not enough locks, leaving space scarce. I'm in the process of switching to the standard New York U Lock, as it offers greater reach, to fit around whatever pole, or crammed bike rack I need to use.

Bikes thieves can just Fahgettaboutit

I have a road bike worth about $2k. I use it for everything, including running errands and shopping. I live in a small apartment, and I don't have room to store a 2nd commuter bike. I made the mistake of using an inexpensive lock, and a thief cut it and stole my bike. I wanted to be sure that would never happen again, so I decided to spend the money on a good lock. Which is this one. I have locked up my bike in many different places, for extended periods of time, and while i'm sure the sight of a high end road bike has caught the eye of many would be thieves, the bike remains in my possession thanks to the security of this lock. Yes, it is very heavy, but thats the cost of having a secure lock. The nice thick rubber makes it durable in harsh weather. Locking and unlocking the shackle is quick and easy. It comes with 3 keys which are high quality. Most importantly, the lock looks very formidable, and will send a clear message to thieves that they have their work cut out for them if they decide to take a crack at this lock. No lock is unbreakable, including this one, but it will certainly do its job well. A thief would much rather decide to pick an easier target, than to go through the risk and work of getting through this lock. It would take power tools. A lot of noise, and some unwanted attention if they were to even try. This is a lock that I trust my bike with, and so far in the year i've been using it, it has not let me down.

Sturdy but inconvenient

I've been using this lock in NYC for about 5 years now. All 4 stars are for the security this lock provides. It will provide the best security for your bike. Since it has a double deadlock in the cylinder, thieves will need to cut both ends of the lock in order to get your bike. The time they need to put into doing that will normally get rid of them. One star has to be knocked off because of how bulky and heavy it is. At almost 4.5 pounds, it is extremely difficult to carry this around with you unless you have a bag. That bag will obviously become heavier than what you're used to. I prefer not to have anything on me if I'm just casually riding so I got the Evolution Mini. I know I'm sacrificing security with that lock but I can carry it on a belt loop and forget it's there until it's time to lock up. I'm more mindful about how long my bike sits while locked up now because of it but that's not a bad thing, in my opinion.

Tough as nails. Saved my bike - TWICE

Let me start by saying that I'm an idiot. I have lived in a very high bike theft area (San Francisco) for 4 years, biking and locking outside everyday, and have never had my bike stolen because of this lock. I am an idiot because I have left my bike outside overnight multiple times, and TWICE now thieves have tried to cut through this lock. I say "tried" because both times they failed. My bike was still there in the morning, albeit with a mangled (but still somewhat intact) lock. I've had to replace the lock both times, which isn't cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than replacing my bike. The ONLY way to get through this lock is with an angle grinder. Bolt cutters? Not a chance. Your wrists will break before this lock. A car jack? The steel is too thick and high quality, and you couldn't fit a car jack into this mini lock anyway. An angle grinder is the only way to do it, and you would need to cut through the shackle twice because it's bolted on both sides. And that takes time, a LOT of noise, and you have to make a heck of a scene. Thieves will more than likely just go find the next bike with a poor quality lock (which I will never understand. you spend $1k on a bike, at least splurge on a lock! but hey, my benefit, because there are much easier pickings out there for thieves than my bike). Anyway, don't be dumb like me and leave your bike out overnight in a sketchy area. But also, buy this lock, and be at ease that you will likely break some poor sod's power tools before getting your bike stolen.

Key can be extremely difficult to insert into lock

The very first time I used this lock, the key would not insert all the way into the lock! Since I'd read the dire warning on the box to *not* turn the key *unless* it's completely inserted, I refrained from turning the key at all -- just jiggled it around and fussed with it until - after a full five minutes - was finally able to get the key fully inserted. This unacceptable experience occurred on at least 3 subsequent occasions. Found that I was able get the key to insert completely by rotating the key slightly when it stops part way in - though this practice is strongly discouraged in the instructions. I wrote to Kryptonite about the situation. More than TWO WEEKS (!) later, finally received a reply, pasted below: Diane Craig (Kryptonite) Aug 16, 13:19 EDT Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your lock. This is what we find works best to keep your lock in its best working condition lubricate the lock cylinder. Do not use WD-40, WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant and will, in fact, remove any type of lubricant that is in the cylinder. Use a lubricant that has a silicone, graphite or Teflon base only. Make sure the lock cylinder is facing up and spray or pour the lubricant into the cylinder. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Place a rag on your workstation and turn the lock over onto the rag for a minute or so. This should be done several times a year to keep your lock working properly. If this does not correct the issue please let us know and include a picture of the lock and key. Paul Weston (me) Aug 3, 18:14 EDT [Note: submitted 1st query 2 days earlier] Key extremely difficult to insert into brand new Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-Lock... Have struggled for more than 5 minutes on 3 different occasions; finally works after much jiggling and multiple re-insertions. Just tried the suggested technique w/ small flathead screwdriver; no luck. Already submitted a query about this a day or two ago; no reply. Guess it's time to return to REI and post a 1-star review on as many sites as I can? Please advise. Bottom line: if you can get the key inserted, the lock might work OK; but - based on my experience - the lock's design is flawed, and Kryptonite's customer service response time is poor.
