I originally went to the REI store and debated on buying either the 40L or 80L. I walked out of the store with the 80L thinking that the extra room would be more versatile. But when I got home I realized the pack was way too big for my frame and would be difficult to carry. So my search led me to this pack. What I liked about this pack is it was the in-between size I was looking for in the store. It has a separate detachable day pack which initially I though I wouldn't use, but in the end I relied on it during my trip. I liked the big U opening to access the interior contents. I pack using cubes so repacking was a cinch. I originally didn't put anything in the top pocket but as the trip went on, I found it convenient to keep my charging cables and liquid toiletries here. (All my personal effects went into the day pack.) You can separate contents into the bottom portion of the bag (i.e. wet vs. dry, dirty laundry, or maybe shoes). It was easy to cover up and protect the straps like when you check the bag in at the airport. The trip I used it for was an overseas trip lasting 10 days. I would recommend this bag to a friend. Also watch the REI videos on this or other backpack features. They were definitely helpful for this novice backpacker.
I took this pack on a 2 week trip to Europe and it was perfect for what I wanted. It is big enough to hold everything I needed, but it wasn't too bulky. With the day pack attached, it was not well balanced, but I just carried the day pack and then it wasn't a problem. It was a little awkward to put on and take off. While it is not carry-on size, it fit in all of the train overhead areas so that was great. I didn't carry it for any really long distances, but it was comfortable for walking from the train to the hostel. Overall it was a great bag and a great valued for the money!
