REI Co-op  Sahara T-Shirt - Men's

This product is not available. Good news: we have a newer version.

Last year we made the fabric in the REI Sahara T-shirt a little lighter. Customers and staff, though, asked for the original Sahara and we listened. And now ... Introducing the "new" old Sahara.

Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.

SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.

TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

NOT the old shirt, very disappointed

This is NOT the original shirt. I have original Sahara t's that are 5 years old, and they have never had pills or fuzz, they breathe better and are much neater in appearance. These shirts, which purport to replace the substandard recycled content shirts (which were sold with no indication that the shirt had changed, annoyingly) are fuzzy and have pilling BEFORE being worn. You can see the fuzz and pilling in the magnified view on the product page!!! I understand that products and vendors change but this time I feel defrauded, as the description explicitly says these are the old shirts, and they are not. There is no way this could be an honest mistake

Not all that impressed

This isn't a terrible shirt but I was hoping for more. The fabric does pill but I could live with that. The biggest turn off for me is that this is the worst odor retaining shirt I have ever purchased. I can often go several days in a cotton t-shirt assuming casual use; no serious sweating. Same thing with several Cool Max t-shirts. After several days there is no odor. But these REI Sahara t-shirts. Within hours of putting them on I am starting to smell myself. This is immediately after a shower now! I would never consider wearing this Sahara shirt more than one day at a time. I will not be buying another.

Meh, just OK

This is an awesome shirt. All of the previous reviews were pretty much on point. Lightweight, comfortable, quick-drying, non-wrinkling, and durable. However, my shirt gets static if you so much as look at it wrong. And it's not a bit of static either, it's a REDICULOUS amount of static that makes the shirt stick to my back and attacks everything around it in a 2 foot radius. I usually don't write terrible reviews, don't take it the wrong way. I really want to love this shirt but it's gotta go back. I'll try another one as this one was on the clearance rack when purchased. Maybe that had something to do with it... I like my Columbia shirt way better though.

Please Bring Back More Colors

Glad you brought back the old style Sahara with heavier fabric. I have bought several of these T's over the years for my husband. Favorite part of this T is the fit and comfort. It is good for travel; as it is lightweight, dries quickly and does not wrinkle; however, have to wash frequently as it tends to retain odors and delicately as it tends to pill. If you bring this T back in more colors i.e. black, red and spice I would buy it again. Hope to find new colors as the season changes. I would love to find a similar fitting T that is still lightweight but a bit more durable with less odor retention. Any suggestions?

Awesome shirts!

I love the Sahara T-Shirt. After I tried one I bought a few more. I only wish they came in more colors! The fabric is great: Lightweight, comfortable, quick-drying, non-wrinkling, and durable. The cut of the shirts is great, too. As a tall and trim guy I find that it's very difficult to find shirts that fit me well, but these look great. The sleeves are perfect and the shirt fits great through the chest and waist. I had great success wearing these shirts while backpacking in the Alps this summer, and they've also been great for the gym or just general daily casual wear. I absolutely recommend this item.

Feels good but nasty colors selection

I purchase Sahara line of clothing to stay cool in hot summer days. Even though the fabric feels good on the skin, the color selection is very poor. The colors are mostly very dark which absorbs sunlight and heat, or just plain ugly. Would prefer more lighter and neutral colors (e.g. light gray, light sage, grayish blue).

Nice shirt for a cold night

Fit well, though the neck seemed to run a little large. Comes with a terrible odor that fades greatly with the first wash but doesn't completely go away even with additional washes. Smells a little chemical/synthetic if you bury your face in the shirt but not enough to notice when you're wearing it. Material is much thinner than expected but makes me warm the minute I put it on. I think the best thing about this shirt is how quickly it dries. Even when you're sweating heavily, the sweat disperses nicely through the fabric and dries quickly with a little air drying.

Not up to my expectations.

Back in '08, I purchased two 'REI Sahara Tech Tee' shirts (Item # 7324320675) . After four years of abuse, those shirts are in excellent condition. I am reviewing my "New" old Sahara T-shirts (Item # 816737) against those standards. After reading the description stating that the Sahara T-shirt was manufactured using the "original" fabric, I made an assumption that the '08 'Tech Tee' had returned. Upon first inspection, the fabric was not what I expected. It seemed thicker and had a different texture. Keep in mind that I have been abusing and washing my old shirts for years, and figured that could account for the difference in texture. After being assured by an REI sales associate that the new shirt was indeed what I wanted, I made my purchase. Now that I have used these new Sahara shirts for close to a year, I am confident that I did not get what I expected. The fabric does not seem to be as durable. The new shirt is pilling, fuzzing and leaving lint on my pack. The fabric does not breathe as well or seem to dissipate sweat as quickly as the '08 version. These new shirts are a little more comfortable on a chilly morning than a hot afternoon, unlike the old version. The bottom line is that I don't believe that I got what I paid for. I don't hate these new shirts, but I certainly don't love 'em as much as the '08 version. Perhaps my expectations are based on the incorrect product, but it seems that "REI Tech" shirts are now only available in button-up style.

Look somewhere else

Bah! What a disappointment! I was looking to add an additional hiking shirt to my wardrobe to complement my 'other retailers' shirt that I found on sale in my small mountain town. The reviews for this looked decent so I decided to give this a try. I wore this for 2 days while doing a Rim to Rim trip across the Grand Canyon. The 'pilling' that others have referenced didn't really bother me, but the fact that the shirt started to wear through where my backpacks waist belt was situated was a sad discovery upon getting back home. I found that it also took a bit longer to dry than my other shirt. While I'll admit I took it through a rough trip it would have been great if it could withstand 24 miles of backpacking. Per REI policy I'll be washing and returning.

Great shirt, make it in Black!

I've had many Sahara shirts over the years. This is at least the third different style of shirt sold as a "sahara". I actually prefer this version and like the thicker material. However, I won't be purchasing any more (despite needing four or five) because they don't come in black anymore. Please make it in black again!!!!
