Poorer quality than before
I bought the chambray bandana and love the color, but when I got home and unfolded realized it was only printed on one side. While this doesn’t make the bandana useless, it was disappointing as I don’t think I’ve ever run into a one-sided bandana—even with some from Walmart! Similar to other reviews it is pretty stiff but was hoping it would soften in the wash. $4 for a bandana should bring better quality. I bought a pink one maybe 3 years ago and it was soft with double-sided print and love it. Please bring back the old style! The larger choice of colors and prints was also fun.
This bandana is not soft
I use these bandanas for hankerchiefs and was hoping that REI's product description was accurate when it mentioned that this product was "soft". It is in fact not soft. I've already put these bandanas that I bought from REI through the wash 15 times and they are still crunchy. I bought bandanas from another site previously and got some really soft ones, but I couldn't remember what site I bought them from. I ultimately settled on buying these from REI because they said they were soft. I would not recommend that others purchase this item if they are looking for a soft bandana.
Large and versatile
This is the only cotton item that ever makes it into my gear on every trip in the backcountry. Sometimes synthetics like polyester and nylon just do not get the job done of cleaning and drying the body, the dishes, or other stuff. I always pack three of these bandanas: black for general trail use (dipping into streams, wiping face and neck, quick body bath, etc), white for kitchen use, and red for 'toilet' use. Color coding is key to avoid cross uses. They dry very quickly, nearly as quickly as any synthetic fabric of similar thickness. They are stiff straight from the factory, but soften up nicely after a few washings and wringings. I still use a few of the same brand I bought about 12 years ago because they last!
Fabric weave is stiff
I've been buying these for decades. Though still 100% cotton the fabric they use currently is too stiff and will not soften. What happened; why change a consistently good product for the worse? FYI, I have a few cotton shirts made from the same type of fabric; they have not softened over time, either. This is destined for the garage rag pile. I'll look elsewhere; unfortunately it will probably be an import product that replaces what Carolina Mfg once had.
Bandana feels like a raincoat! :-(
I bought 2 of these bandannas. When I bought them, they felt stiff. I have washed them lots of times, and they are still stiff. They feel like they are made of a coated fabric suitable for raincoats. They are useless for blowing my nose!I tried to contact the manufacturer ([@]), but their "Contact Us" comment form does not work, and their web site uses an invalid expired security certificate! So I sent them a letter instead.
Perimeter stitching unravelled after first wash.
Disappointed. I bought two and washed them after they arrived. The stitching around the border completely unraveled on both bandanas. Poor quality.
Stiff material
Got a couple of these a few months ago, one gray and one red. Been using them intermittently for a few months as a headband and to wipe sweat off my face on hot days working and hiking. Whatever the fabric is treated with that makes them somewhat stiff has yet to fully wash out after a few dozen washings. Similar bandanas from other suppliers aren't this stiff. A bit of the dye washes out of the gray one for the first few washings, but not too much. Otherwise, they're okay, but these wouldn't be my first choice because of the stiffness factor.
Store stock is not made in the USA!
I have purchased over 6 of these in different colors at my local REI store in Short Pump, VA. These scarfs are used as neck protection from the sun and as headbands. All of the scarfs have poor stitching along the edges, which frays in a short time. I have not found any color that was made in the USA! There were all made in China. Come on REI there are quality made bandannas made here in the USA. Try Tractor Supply and General Dollar for some quality scarfs which say Made in the USA.
Just wear and wash 'em...a lot.
I've read other comments about the cotton's stiffness and agree, but... When I ordered a stack a couple of months ago (got 5 as I tend to misplace such things and was tired of searching when I wanted to be running), I was disappointed that they arrived nearly shiny, so thin and nonabsorbent. I use them a lot anyway, get 'em very sweaty, and wash them frequently. As a result, they are now softening up nicely. Perhaps the prolonged break-in time is a precursor to long fabric life?
Stiff and faded on first wash
Worst bandannas I've ever had. Coarse fabric faded on first wash, but has remained stiff for numerous additional washes. Cheap but not worth it.
