Terrible book! Incorrect maps!
We bought this book to hike to the San Pedro Wilderness. The written directions were correct until we matched it with a compass, then we find out the "North" compass rose on the map was wrong, it was actually facing east. Then we discovered that even though the book was printed the year before, there were numerous errors in the map. A junction that didnt exist, a trail that dead ended and caused us to have to hike 8 miles back the wrong way, the mileage scale is off, and it seems as if the author has never been to the site before.
Pretty Good Guide
I'm only writing this because the sole review, for one star, is a little misleading. I've used this book for about 5 years and, overall, have had very few problems. Certainly nothing like the huge mix-up described in the other review. If you are new to New Mexico and want an easily carried, state-wide, fairly current guide to hiking trails then this is a good option. There are others, of course. If you are in the Santa Fe area then the Sierra Clubs "Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area" works well, near Albuquerque the "60 Hikes Within 60 Miles" book is good, and around Las Cruces the "Day Hikes and Nature Walks in the Las Cruces - El Paso Area" is somewhat dated, but still good. If all you want is a little insight into the local area then there are many, many good website. I would try the HikeArizona site first, it has been a go-to resource for me for years. Among many honorable mentions are the sites: New Mexico Volunteers For the Outdoors, New Mexico Meanders, Southern New Mexico Explorer, Ondafringe, and Hiking Project. Have fun out there!
