Great Paddle for Mid-High Angle Paddler
I originally purchased the Werner Skagit paddle from REI and did not like it from the start. I felt like I was getting nothing out of my strokes. Turns out I must have a higher angle paddle than I initially thought. I would say I am a mid angle paddler 80% of the time and go to high the remainder. I took this paddle out and fell in love with it withing in the first 20 strokes. I kayak inland lakes throughout Michigan and have been kayaking for 10+ years. I often take my dog with me. This paddle enters the water crisply & smoothly. Easy to control throughout the stroke and can feel output throughout the stroke. This paddle is great if you like to "push" the water back (at least the way i describe it). Very happy with this purchase, glad I made the switch.
Long term report
I own 2 other paddles, and have used 2-3 others over the past several years, but the Tybee is my favorite. I've paddled well over 1,000 miles with it over the last 2 years, everything from flat lakes to ocean surf to class III white water. It seems to do everything well: forward strokes, reverse strokes, sweeps, draws, sculling, bracing and rolling. It has virtually no flutter at all, so you need only the gentlest grip on the shaft with your on-side had during a forward stroke. 900 strokes per mile over 20 miles is 18,000 strokes in a day, so being able to loosen up ones grip 18,000 times a day adds up! The joint developed just a bit of play in it last week, but I'm suspecting it was operator error--I may have put too much weight on the shaft when bracing it across the kayak deck while climbing out onto some rocks. If it needs replaced, I'll absolutely buy another Tybee!
Great price. Great backup paddle
New for '09. Had used the nylon/carbon (black) Tybee model for a few years. Liked this as it is identical in everything but blade construction. This one DOES have the new Werner shaft (flush button). I have since changed over to a Corryvrecken (HUGE blade) as my primary paddle. This is on the back of my boat as a spare. Noticeably heavier than the carbon Tybee and way more heavy than my Corryvrecken. However, I find the Tybee shape to be better suited for smaller lakes and larger rivers. Ocean and Great Lakes are where I find the Corryvrecken to really shine. A trade off for the weight, is the near-indestructibility of the 'glass/nylon blades. While I have not had to use it due to the loss of a paddle (thank god!!!!), my yellow Tybee does get a lot of use at night (covered in reflective tape) and in areas that are really rocky or filled with stumps and other obstacles. In short, if you are a mid to high angle paddler, the nylon/'glass Tybee is a great backup or a great starter paddle at a great price.
Werner Tybee Paddle - Fiberglass by Wern
This a great light weight paddle. It has good settings, and unscrews to become 2 paddles. Good for storage too.
nice light paddle
I like this paddle because it is nice and light, and comes apart easily..I don't have my kayak yet, but tried it out with a friend's yak, and it was great.
Solid Paddle
Paddle works great and feels solid. Easily adjustable.
I love it!
I cannot wait to get this into the water! Breakup cannot come too soon.
