What a nice bun rest!

After 300 miles, I cried "uncle!" on breaking in the seat with Proofide, the wax-and-oil mix that Brooks loves to sell, sell, sell. I used, used used Proofide and hurt X3. Friends said, "water and oil. I googled "Break in leather bike saddle." The top answer: drop it in a bucket of hand-hot water for 7 minutes, towel off the water, rub in some oil (I used Mobil 1) and ride it for 15-20 minutes. It now has dimples that match my derriere! Yeah!!! Did I write "Yeah?" Well, Yeah, Again! More vinyl seats to nail to the wall in the hall of pain! But what gives? No color but black in my local REI? Really? Honey is the new black in bike seats.

For me the worst saddle I've ever ridden

I was very excited when I got this saddle, but after trying constantly in vain to adjust it properly I simply hated it. It has to be the most overrated saddle on the market. I know a lot has to do with personal fit, but looking at a lot of reviews on other forums I think a lot of people are buying into the hype and riding in an uncomfortable saddle. You should not be putting a lot of pressure on your arms or legs to compensate for the saddle, and this is what I had to do, and what a lot of people I've seen comment say they do. It takes a lot of miles to break in, which is ok considering that it is durable and will last longer than almost any other saddle on the market, but is a waste if after 500+ miles it is still uncomfortable in every configuration. Due to the leather it is super slippery when you first get it, and you slide all over. This eventually lessens a bit, but is something to be aware of. This saddle is probably best on an upright cruiser-type bike. As for a road, cross, or somewhat aggressive mountain bike I say stay away unless you can test it first. This put a huge amount of pressure on my sensitive areas no matter the height or tilt of the saddle. The rails are not as long as most modern saddles, so there is very little room for adjustment. I was always sliding forward, and never got my sit bones anywhere near the rear of the saddle unless I would basically half stand half hold myself back there w/ my arms. I've read a lot of people saying this is what they do, and it makes them a better rider. IMO this is not the proper fit for a saddle, so for me it was no good. The one good thing about this saddle is that since it is IMO severely overrated you can buy it and resell it without losing too much. For people like me a Fizik or Specialized Toupe is a far superior saddle. My Specialized was head and shoulders above my previous saddle which was decent, and after sitting on this one for a few rides I had to fight myself not to just go buy another, which I eventually did. Also to note I got a little ruboff of coloring on my shorts, but he manual warns about this, and it may have been to the leather treatment I put on it. I can't comment on the effect rain has on the saddle because it never really got wet when I rode it, I was lucky enought to have covered parking, had fenders which protected thte bottom. Most of my rides are commutes or rides < 30 miles, although I sometimes go longer; I usually ride everyday since my bike is my main transportation. I rarely would ride more than 5-10 miles on this saddle before it was so uncomfortable from both the fit and the sliding around that I wanted to go home. I wasn't paid for this review, and I doubt you could pay me to ride this saddle again. The narrower one looks like it might be slightly better, but for the price I can buy 2 great used saddles.

The. Best. Saddle.

For those in a hurry, here's the Cliff Notes version - BUY THIS SADDLE. I'm a commuter/tourer who was looking for a saddle that wouldn't kill me after 60 miles. After reading the reviews I decided to give Brooks a try. I'm glad I did. Unlike many people, I found it comfortable right out of the box. As a brand new saddle, it was more comfortable than any of my other three (Selle Italia). I put a couple of light coats of Brooks Proofide on it, logged about 200 miles on 20-milers and then went for a 60-mile ride. Relief at last! I'll never ride anything other than a Brooks B-17.

Still the standard

I have a classic Italian racing bike, and it had a mimic Brooks saddle. After over 50 years of riding, one of the rails failed. So when it came time to replace, there really was only one choice. After several weekends of riding, and well over a hundred miles, it fits like a charm, and no needing any breaking in. It comes with a packet of wax to rub into the saddle, and if one submits proof of purchase, a 10 year warranty.

A Classic for a Reason

I feel like every long ride I take with local groups, I see others with this saddle (or another Brooks variation). I’m now two weeks into riding it and I have to say even though it is firm, it is comfortable. When I hit bumps, I don’t feel the post in the center like my old saddle because of the leather and the way it is stretched. When I took a break mid ride in 90 degree sunny weather, it wasn’t burning hot when I got back on to ride. Im only 100 miles in but excited to have this saddle for a long time. Totally worth it to me.

A premium product worth every penny.

I have been riding a variety of seats over 20 years, and this by far is my favorite. It's a looker, first of all. I got the black since my bike is black, but I bet it would look even better in a classic brown color. It took maybe five rides of various distances before it really wore in, but I could tell by the second ride that it would be amazing. Now that I'm riding in the winter, the seat stays warm, unlike a plasticy seat. You may like this firm seat if you like, well firm seats and chairs in general. You sit on the seat, not in the seat. If that's your preference, you'll be rewarded with a wonderful seat that will no doubt give you many years of delight.

The only way to fly!

Had Brooks before. Love 'em! Would like titanium rails for lightness, but as one guy commented, the extra weight won't matter because you'll ride farther faster because you are more comfortable. I won't ride anything else. Period. The fancier ones are for people with more money than gray matter. If you're overweight, you know why. I've raced in my youth on a PX-10E and this saddle came in the box. Also had a Raleigh Comp and this saddle came with it. Had a Can-o-ale from a mechanic and this was it's seat. Go figure! I bought a Serotta second-hand with a smell (err, gel) seat and could not wait to get rid of energy-robbing bounce. Please!

The B-17 is the best saddle I’ve ever owned!

I got a second bike and didn’t even consider putting anything other than a Brooks on it. My other Brooks saddle was a game changer for me and this B-17 doesn’t disappoint. I can spend several hours on my hardtail MTB riding fairly rough stuff and feel absolutely fine down below afterwords. There isn’t any chafing or hotspots or pinch points. It doesn’t run hot and it’ll only get better with time.

Great Bike Seat

I have tried many different bike saddles and the B-17 by Brooks is by far the comfiest out there. Literally the day I bought it I took the seat out for a 13mi ride with no bike shorts on. After a bit of adjusting seat position I was hooked! The leather flexes to your body absorbing bumps in the road while remaining supportive. Perfect for Seattle's pothole-ridden streets. I can't speak for the durability of this product as I've only had it a couple weeks, but I can assure you it will always be on one of my bikes. Do your butt a favor and get one.

Still the best

I had a Brooks saddle from 1962 - 1980, then quit cycling. When I bought a Novara Divano last year the stock saddle was killing me, so I went to the old reliable Brooks B-17. This thing is great! First; this thing feels hard, but there is just enough give, right out of the box, for comfort. Second; adjusting is finicky. I have had to make lots of minor shifts to get things just right. Now, I ignore my saddle and just ride my bike - the whole point. Finally, I know this thing is built like a tank. My last Brooks survived incredible abuse and still looked new when I sold it. I expect this one to outlive my bike - heck, it might outlive me. The only down side to my Brooks B17 is that the rails are too far apart for the bracket that came with my seat bag. I had to jury rig some "hook and loop" stuff to attach the bag under the seat. That is my only issue. Brooks saddles: still the best.

Best Of Several Saddles I've Used

First of all, I don’t know that any bicycle saddle can be accurately described as being comfortable. I think relative comfort, minimal discomfort and tolerability are more accurate terms when comparing saddle comfort. That being said, the Brooks B17 was more comfortable than several other saddles I’ve used, including some pretty expensive models. It was relatively comfortable right out of the box and the comfort level seems to be improving with use. Various sources have cited break-in estimates of 250 to 1000 miles, if correctly treated with Proofide, which I did. I now have 590 miles on the saddle, and compared with other saddles I’ve tried, I’m very pleased with the comfort level. I did try one ride in shorts without chamois. It was pretty uncomfortable, so I won’t be doing that again.
