Works like a champ, but one heavy sucker
I have had a swing daddy, and i would never go back. I just got this and it has performed flawlessly. It was fairly simple to put together. Putting the bikes on is super fast and the days of worrying about my bikes getting scratched on each other, or the wheels spinning for miles while on the other rack are over. It will fit anything regardless of size or geometry. I got the hold up, and the add on to make it a 4 bike carrier. I don't know what lead filled metal they use, but with the 4 bike carrier, it is a heavy unit. That is my only complaint. I wish they could do something to cut the weight by at least 1/3 if not more.
Excellent product
Very easy to load and unload. Seems to hold bikes securely. I have a 2" hitch and it seems to be stable, even on dirt roads, although I have not done any really rugged roads yet. It drops down a little below horizontal, but I still have to loosen the bike closest to my hatch to make enough room to get the hatch open. I don't have to completely remove the bike, just loosen it enough to get that extra inch. (I have a Forester). I knew that would be an issue though, so I have no complaints. It is solid and I plan on getting the attachment to carry 4 bikes.
Works for me
This review is for the 2" HoldUp. Having used the rack for a month I agree with most of the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the reviews here. It is expensive and based on the number of failures reported I expect something will break sometime. It is fast and easy to load and will accomodate my Townie. Since I take it on and off frequently I found a nice wrench to use: GearWrench 15/16" reversible combination ratcheting wrench Overall, there are not many choices for this type for rack and I am pretty happy with it.
Fits any bike size
One thing I was unsure of when looking at this bike rack is whether it would fit all the bike sizes in my family, starting from the tot bike and all the way to heavy downhill bike. I was concerned since this rack doesn't have the rails to adjust the base width. Not to worry! As it turned out this design nicely accommodates the bikes of all sizes and wheel widths. I am really happy with the product that I am sure going to last forever based on its exceptional build quality.
Love it
Bikes go on and off in 3 minutes! The rack only contacts bicycle tires so there is no possible damage to paint or bike. Can quickly put rack on another vehicle that has a receiver unlike roof racks. I do suggest stapping the hook to the tire on the back bicycle so there is no possibility of the hook disconnecting frome the tire(the bike would fall off and drag on the road being held by the other wheels securing stap). For security I used a key lock receiver pin. Additionally, the rack with or without bikes could quickly be stollen by removing the pivot pin, so always us the included locking cable which attaches to the end of the pin or buy the Yakima pin lock. That's why they make one. I have been a mechanic and this rack exceeds my standards!
Love it!
I wanted a bike rack that would carry multiple styles and sizes of bikes and would still allow me to open the rear hatch of my car. This did that, and I decided on this one because the parts that hold the bike in place do not touch the frame, so when I get a good bike with a light frame, it will not get damaged. I love how easy it is to get the bikes on and off the rack and that it came with a lock to prevent theft. Would definitely recommend.
Love it!
I recently used my friend's similar rack and thought the Yakima version much better. the lock works nicely- not long enough to loop wheels too but I just added a second lock- no problem. It is a bit heavy for me (I am a small female), but I think the weight is necessary for a sturdy product. I love this rack- it hold my bike securely, is designed well, and easy to load and unload bikes. The button on the arm is plastic, and I hope it hold up- that will be my only concern. But REI says it give a ifetime warranty!
Absolutely LOVE this rack!!
We picked this up after adding a hitch to my Highlander so that we could take our bikes camping with us. Install is a breeze, bikes go on and off with ease, and the built-in security features ensure that your bikes are safe while traveling.
Yup
After a killer ride it's great to not have to wrestle your bike to the top of vehicle. Very solid! Looking at bikes in rearview window going down torn up dirt roads, bikes barely move. (2" Adapter)
Easy to Use, Works Well with All Bikes
I spent some time researching bike racks because I have both a road bike and a mountain bike. My husband has an extra tall hybrid as well. Because I'm female and more than likely going to be lifting the bike(s) on and off the car by myself, I wanted something that was easy to use. This rack fits all these needs. Pros: I can put our bikes on the rack by myself in a couple of minutes (and I don't have to lift them very high), they feel secure and don't wobble much, they don't scratch each other or the car, and the rack fits both types of bikes easily. I really liked that for this type of rack, it doesn't matter if you have a "male-type" bike (with the post that goes up high from the seat to the handle bars) or a "female-type" bike (where the post swings down from the seat to the handle bars). Cons: The locking cable is about 2 feet two short to secure both bikes to the hitch pin. You can secure the bikes to the rack, but if Yakima had just given you about 2 more feet, it would have been a better design and you could have secured the bikes better to the car. I found that you REALLY had to tighten the hitch bolt for it to not wobble. The first week I had it, the rack and bikes moved a lot, but once my husband tightened the bolt more, it was fine. It's pricier than other options, but it was a better fit for me (it was worth the extra cost so that all bikes fit easily).
