Rock solid

This rack recently got torture-tested by me. The manufacturer does not recommend that you drive offroad with this rack. You can. I drove the entire Cathedral Valley Loop drive (56 miles, all offroad) in Capitol Reef NP, including a stream crossing, and this rack stayed put and the bike didn't budge. Also this rack folds down out of the way and the F150 tailgate opens completely with room to spare. XLNT product.

Rack failure

Used the bike rack on the 2" hitch on back of camping trailer. The tubing failed. When I called Yakima, they told me the rack is not tested for use on back of camping trailers and therefore warranty if voided. Be forwarned if you plan to use this for anything but short local drives on back of your car.

Good idea. Poor engineering

I had an earlier version of this product, and liked it much better. It was much more stable and had a curved bottom bracket that fits into the hitch. This product rattles a lot and has lots of play at the bottom bracket. My car is low, so the 90 degree angle at the bottom causes some scrapes when I'm entering/exiting a steep entry/exit. Not a problem with the older curved version. That and the wobble cause the low rating. I like the idea of the easy up and down. However, overall, it just doesn't work well...

Great bike rack for 2.

This is an excellent bike rack. Have it on my 06' 4Runner and carry MTBs. Chose it over the Thule Roadway 2 as the Roadway 2 doesn't include anti-sway cage, its extra. Yakima Double Down includes it. Very stable on the hitch in all directions, absolutely zero rattles while driving; don't know its there whithout looking in the mirror. The fit at the hitch is a bit unfinished looking however, as the 2" sleeve sticks out from the tongue. Looks a bit hodge podgey; everyone one who sees it asks if I have it on right. The bottle openers are a a fun touch. Highly recommend this one.

great bike rack

I use this rack all summer long. I have a U-frame comfort bike and while it was tricky to figure out the best way to put the bike on (without using a tube adapter) now I am a pro at it. I feel fine driving on the freeway, and only hear it clunk around on bumpy roads. Installing it was difficult because there was a metal bump in my hitch to stop the tongue at a specific place. The tongue was too long and we had to take a sledgehammer to knock off the metal bump. I installed a 1 1/4 hitch on my Honda CRV. Now it works great and I can take it on and off by myself, keeping a wrench in the car. Without a locking mechanism anyone with a wrench could come and take the whole rack out, and I haven't found a good way to lock my bike to the rack.

Works well

The instructions warn about not having a bike sit exactly horizontal as it rests on the rack frame, Standard mountain bike frames will not sit horizontally; one tire will be perhaps much higher than the other. This has not turned out to be a problem at all. The stretch tie-downs require a strong hand but hold securely.

Jiggle, jiggle, jiggle

I bought the Yakima Doubledown to carry my Electra Townie 21. The install went fine, but he rack jiggles A LOT in the hitch! I was afraid the bike would fall off on the highway - very stressful. I had less sway with my trunk mounted rack. I'm going to have a professional take a look, but if they can't "clean up" the hitch connection, I'm going to have to return it and find something else.

Not sure about this one

I just bought this rack and I am already concerned by the amount of movement in the hitch. There is about 2" of sway at the top of the rack. This does not look promising on a bump or rough road and I'm not sure how one would fix it. Other then this major drawback (I may be returning the rack), it is easy to install and convenient to use.

Put to the test and passed!

We purchased this rack before heading to Death Valley with our mountain bikes. The rack was very easy to install and it was easy to load both of our bikes. It was helpful to have a second set of hands when putting on the second bike since the handle bar of the first bike had to fit through the spokes of the second. We drove on the interstate through high winds, over extremely rough roads and even through a snow storm and this rack was great. There is some movement at the hitch connection but that is to be expected with any hitch assembly. Never did it seem that the bikes were not securely attached. As far as locking the bikes to the car, we simply purchased a longer cable and locked it to the hooks next to the hitch. The drop down feature made it very easy to get things in and out of our vehicle, even with the bikes still on it (just make sure someone is holding the bikes, just in case). Bonus feature - bottle opener for your après ride beverage!

Eh

Overall this is a great rack, the flip down system is flawless. My only complaint is how it mounts into the hitch, the 2" sleeve is kinda hokey and the pin is undersized for my 2" hitch on my xterra. I get severe movement almost worrysome. I am going to fix it by drilling it out for a standard pin to fit through.
