Over 10 years and still going on adventures
The good: It may look worse for the wear but between forest service, ski patrol, trail work, countless hikes, manual labor, and general garden work my hat is still going strong. Even with me rolling it up to stuff in my pack! The bad: One small tear has developed in the fabric. I also had to take in excess on the back flap so it would hang nicely flat. Packing it flat isn’t easy in a hike pack. It’s hard to keep securely rolled up. Some sun fading has occurred on the side mesh. Looking at getting a new one to wear when I don’t want to look completely grungy. I wish there was a hybrid between the adventure and sport version of these hats. I would LOVE for my adventure hat to have loops to hold sunglasses secure and the brim to fold yet still have max sun protection (hint hint). Have to wear glasses on my head under my hat to keep them secure which looks weird and makes for inconvenient sunglass access.
Perfect coverage to visit the Pharaohs
The hat was great as well as the pants and shirts!
absolute favorite!
This is my third in this style. (changed colors this time) I travel a lot. Bought a similar one from a different company for my son in law while my daughter ( whom I got one just like mine) and he lived in Nicaragua. He wanted hers so when I went home, had to leave mine for him. They are sooo light and clean nicely with a wash cloth. Back in the states,I bought a replacement for myself. I used to fold in half and tuck in my bag, so it got a crease in the beak. I didn’t mind it at all but after 6 years with the same one, decided to retire the old faithful to yard work duty. The neck string is so light and slide easily! Great for loosening to let it slide down your back when in a store. Doesn't choke when you do that either! Just bought the new one in that beautiful neutral green. Love it. But of course won’t be sporting it until after Covid 19! Love the fact that it comes in sizes- as I have a big head and one size fits all NEVER fits my noggin! Would never buy from anyone else!
Inadequate Sun Protection...
An 'Ultra' adventure hat would keep the regular adventure hat brim-width and cape dimensions, and add a folding brim (excellent improvement, it makes it packable) as well as other features. (I have to wear my glasses all the time, so the sunglasses holder feature is useless to me.) This version has a narrower brim and cape and doesn't provide adequate sun protection. The adventure hat has great sun protection, but isn't easily packable (brim creases when rolled). Disappointed, I will be looking elsewhere for an effective sun hat.
Don't leave home without it!
Exactly what I was looking for. EXACTLY. I burn terribly and easily, and my neck usually gets it first. I'd gotten by with a gimme cap with a bandana stuffed in it forever, but when I saw this...well, it's just perfect. It's lightweight, it fits nice without binding, and it BREATHES--that's a big deal. And it goes everywhere with me; sure, hiking, yeah, that's what I got it for, but it pretty much goes everywhere I do anymore. It's that comfortable.
Lifetime Guarntee is Bogus
Somewhere along the line they significantly cheapened the quality. Old ones from 15 years ago were great. On new hats the cheap cardboard-like brim will remain bent (blocking vision and flopping down in your face) after packing in a backpack as it will retain the memory of how it was packed. Basically, cheap sunhats from Costco are better than the Sunday Afternoon hat. I tried to use the Lifetime guarantee on a 1 year old hat but they told me I should have watched a YouTube video on how to properly pack the hat. My Costco sunhat brims don't stay all bent up after packing. Very disappointing! Lifetime guarantee is bogus and not honored.
Not cute but extremely functional
I really love this oversized hat. I love being outdoors but do not wear sunglasses so I need something that will help me keep the sun out of my face/eyes but as well as protect my neck. The UPF protection and adjustable sizing were perfect during my recent 7 mile hike. No issues with having to adjust it and the flappy back worked well with my 25L pack. This hat is not at all stylish which I gladly embrace. Its super functional. The only reason I did not rate it a 5 is because there is Velcro on the back to fold up the cape that feels a bit flimsy. There is a cheap piece of fabric attached to the Velcro on the back of the hat that is easy to loose. This may not be an issue for those without hair but getting hair caught in velcro is never fun. I was pretty diligent about making sure that fabric stayed there when I did not have it folded up.
Great bicycle sun protection
My dermatologist recommended using better sun protection while riding my bike. While looking for a sombrero that would fit a 30 inch head/helmet, I stumbled across this item. With a pair of careful scissor cuts to the side mesh to allow for the helmet straps, it fits inside the helmet comfortably without even needing to adjust the strap length. The cuts were along the mesh holes four holes up from the brim extending to the fourth hole from each end. If fraying ever becomes a problem, I will try some type of flexable rubber glue along the edges but so far no problem. The hat still works well without the helmet. I've tried it out on three different Giro helmets of various ages and it works great.
Dorky but effective
It looks pretty goofy and I was a little embarrassed when people saw me, but that's what it takes to block the sun. Hiking in AZ I could see others without such a protruding brim or massive fabric over the neck were clearly exposed to the sun despite their eyes being covered. It was also validating to see a trail guide had the same hat- because they work amazingly. If you don't mind looking like a goof-ball, or at least you prefer that to a severe sunburn, this could be the right hat for you. I use it because I hate using sunscreen when backpacking. Unfortunately it's just not possible for a hat to cover your face, neck, and ears without looking goofy, even the other REI hats often leave ears unprotected.
Best sun-protection hat out there
Best wide-brim sun-protection hat. The brim does suprisingly well in the wind. It can be worn loosely or tightened down when the wind blows. Yes, it looks dorky. But, when I spend my days out in the sun in the desert or Sierra Nevada mountains, functionality rules - and that's the Sunday Afternoons hat. I like that the outer part of the brim brim can be folded back for more view of the sky, but then I can fold it back into place when the sun shines stronger - and the brim retains its stability. I bought mine about 10 years ago, and it's still going strong. Great product!
