Exactly as advertised
Bought as a replacement for a 20 year old Trek 930 with a 7-speed Shimano drivetrain, very easy to install especially with the powerlink option. If resizing is required then a chain pin tool will be needed. After a 10 mile ride over some rough and gritty terrain the chain was quiet and performed exactly as it should.
Easy and robust
Solidly built chain, comes with a speed-link to close it. Can be used with 6, 7, and 8 speed cassettes, but will be too wide for 9, 10, or 11 cog cassettes. Works with SRAM and Shimano
Perfect adjustable chain
I bought the chain for my wife's cannondale mountain bike. I had to shorten the chain to the length of the original. It is quite easy to do if you have the tool. The interlocking system was easy to use and worked perfectly.
Lasts longer than cheaper chains
After my road bike's original chain wore out (confirmed by spacing bigger than the .75 mark on the Park Tool chain checker), I replaced it with this European-made (Made in Portugal) chain. My bike is an 8-speed and I ride often, and I noticed after many months that not only does this SRAM chain last longer than my bike's original KMC Z8 chain but it seems more resistant to rust. I highly recommend this chain and can confirm that indeed it lasts way longer than chains sold at a lower price point.
New cassette and chain make climbing hills easier.
When having my handlebars rewrapped, the bike tech suggested a larger cassette and new chain. He was quite convincing in his explanation about how much more comfortable it would be to climb hills. I thought I might as well give it a try and he was right. The tech didn't push me into it. He was just making the suggestion and made me think he just wanted me to enjoy my ride. He made a few other tweaks and all this has definitely made a difference. Occasionally, my chain used to fall off when changing gears and that has not happened since I got the new gear and tweaks.
Works
Works very well. Once I had it properly lubricated (see below) it was a huge improvement to my drive train over the factory chain that came with my bike. Though it did immediately make me realize that my old chain had stretched and my chainrings had become worn and needed replacement. So if you get skipping out of the box...don't blame the chain right away. Check your chainrings. Each link has a slight jut out to be the contact point with the derailleurs. This contact point is more substantial than on my previous KMC chain which REALLY helps with making shifting smoother on my low end drive train. Out of the box it has WAY too much lubrication on it though. And it's a very sticky lubrication. Had I ridden without removing some the chain would have been gunked up with road debris in minutes, which would have been grinding through my gears quickly However, the factory lube is probably better than any lube I'd put on so rather than fully strip it and reapply a dry silicone lube I gently just removed the excess surface lube with a mile degreaser and towel. But...seriously overkill on the factory lube.
No regrets
My previous chain had about 20-25% life left (per a park tool chain checker), but shifting was getting more dubious. I didn't want an offbrand chain (what's $2-5 vs. potentially getting stranded?). The power link was easy to connect, the packaging was appropriate, and my drivetrain is much smoother operating. I'll definitely buy this again. As with most preventative maintenance... I should have done this sooner!
Good chain.
Great value. Smooth. Reliable. Long-lasting. I've had a dozen of these chains on 3 different bikes.
Nice aggressive chain
Works smoothly & strong for those adventurous ones
Ok, but did not work well for me
I bought this last fall, to replace a KMC chain that lasted 4,000 miles in a year and a half. This lasted less than 700 miles. I would not buy this again and would think twice about buying another SRAM chain.
