I got these socks for my Daughter for our hike on the Lycian Way in Turkey. I have done 1800 miles southbound on the PCT. A third of those miles have been done with these REI wool socks. They wick well and keep my feet reasonably dry. I swap them out with another identical pair hanging on the back of my pack drying out, and the method has saved me from the blister I had with heavier socks in the past. I am now convinced that these light socks with roomy shoes are the way to go. I plan to wear them for the next 800 miles through the desert.
First of all, I accidentally bought the female version of these socks (I'm a guy) and have noticed no issues and LOVE these. I'm guessing it's simply for sizing purposes, not shape. Now that the awkward info is out of the way.... I have hiked in Wigwam Light Hike socks for a few months now (through winter and summer hiking) and really enjoyed them! Super comfy, not too itchy and kept the moisture wicked away from my feet. I was positive I needed no other sock. On a warm day after purchasing these socks, after a long day of hiking WOW!! A HUGE difference! Not at all itchy, MUCH lighter than the Wigwam and don't hold as much of a stink from my shoes. I would HIGHLY recommend these to gals (and guys)!
I wore these socks (my favoriet socks) on my recent adventure to climb Half Dome. Didn't make the dome, had to turn around because my boots were falling apart, but that's another review for another time. Had no choice but to hike 5 miles back to camp in just my socks. I thought for sure I'd have to sacrifice them to the sock gods... guess what! No holes, no thin spots and THEY ARE STILL LIKE NEW! Thanks REI for making a durable sock. I highly recommend these without reservation. :)
I have purchased a few different types of wool socks, including smartwool, and these are my fave. I've taken these socks on everything from day hikes in the New Mexican desert to 100 mile treks in the Peruvian Andes. With other brands, my feet would blister or be too hot/cold. These provide, in my opinion, the right amount of warmth, cushion, and moisture wicking. Plus, they dry quickly. I wear a heavier weight sock when at camp if the temp is below freezing, but I run cold. I wear a women's size 7 and I found the socks to be true to size.
I got my first REI socks when I was in Peace Corps. I used them very hard over the course of several years, day-in-day-out during the winters. Hiking, daily use, around the house, you name it. They've remained warm, comfortable, retained their shape and just become and stayed my favorite over the years. I now have both brown and blue pairs. I prefer the blue as they're prettier around the house--to me. I have large calves and hate tight crew socks, and although these are short-ish socks (but above the ankles, no fear), they are WARM. I absolutely love them, as I get cold feet every winter, and I wear them to bed too. These are my absolute favorite socks--and as I buy more, probably my only winter socks.
These are comfy socks and decent for the price. You can't tell from the photo but right at the toe line, there is a mesh, thin fabric which allows breathability for the foot. Kind of annoying that the heel started pilling after one use...but for the price that's okay. These socks will still last awhile.
I wear these winter and summer. They're great alone inside on cold days instead of slippers. My feet have always perspired but these remedy that.
I wear these socks almost everyday in the winter months and on hikes but they pill very quickly and get loose pretty quickly as well. They are great at keeping your feet warm but I have gone through multiple pairs already in a few months. If you are a person that gets itchy from wool don't worry about these socks, they feel like fleece on the inside!
I bought my first pair of these in 2014 wore them in the store. The price was a little less so I decided to try them. I was preparing for a six week trip to Spain to do the El Camino all summer then wore them almost exclusively for the entire 700K during September-October because they felt better than the other pair I took. I am still wearing the same pair for hiking today. They is a little wear on the top above my small toe but the heal is still perfect. Bought more in 2016 for my sons and myself. I am sold on these.
Wore these socks on a 8 mile hike. Regulated temperature very well. Feet never felt to warm or to cold, just right. Also wicked away moisture. Very comfortable fit and didn't feel as though they were to lightweight for a longer hike. Great merino socks for a cheaper price than other brands.
