Solid piece of equipment
Great sling I use it for an anchor and as an extension when solo top roping. I’ve used it as a step to ascend my rope very versatile and has held up great
Shorter than the Average Sling
You need to be aware that these slings are consistently two inches shorter than is typical for shoulder-length, half-length and double-length sewn runners and slings (as measured by the folded loop). Metolius says that they are "aggressively priced." Well, shaving four inches off each piece of nylon should reduce their price. You get what you pay for, don't you? I don't blame the company for their marketing strategy. I do, however, take issue with retailers that don't accurately describe products. The actual lengths of the Metolius 18mm Nylon Open Loop Slings, rated at 22kN, are: 10"/25cm, 22"/56cm), 46"/117cm. I have a bunch of these shorter-than-average slings, and they do the job for me because I am a shorter-than-average climber. A couple of the 22" slings work well as an improvised chest harness that is comfortably wide and pliable. The 46" sling works well as a foot loop with my ascender. One other caveat: I find it helpful to "color-code" my slings by length. If you shop on-line, you won't be able to specify the colors you want. That may be a good enough reason to visit a retail store and pick out your own slings.
Well-constructed sling
Metolius makes great stuff, and these slings are no exception. Well constructed. The thicker nylon is nice for safety-neurotic climbers who prefer more durable materials, and the sling works great as an over-the-shoulder multi-use piece of gear (e.g., anchoring, indirect belays, carrying additional gear). For the price, one or two are worth having on any outdoor route. I use them primarily for extending the reach of anchors for top-roping (to prevent sharp edges from cutting into the rope), as well as for clipping in on an indirect belay.
Durable, reliable, and versatile
My recent purchase of four Metolious slings replaces two that I’ve been using for eight years. The old ones still look solid, but it is past time to replace them for safety sake. I haven’t used the new ones yet so my comments are based on the old ones. I visually compared the old to the new and I couldn’t find any difference in construction or materials. (I’m thinking of nailing the old ones to the ceiling beams in my garage and stashing a couple pairs of skis in them.) I love the versatility of these slings. I use them in caves to rig nuisance drops or to create step up/down aids in tricky spots in caves. They are also great for backing up a static line used for ascending or rappelling in caves. They also are very handy for positioning the main line so that the rope doesn’t rub against the lip. Go ahead and stock up on these strong and reliable slings. They take no space in your pack and you will always find a use for them.
18mm nylon sling
well made and very strong... To prove a point I actually pulled a car with it.
perfect
Bought these to set up a top rope anchor. Perfect.
Good Sling... "Assorted" Colors
REI has consistently sent me all blue 120cm slings, but the 60cm slings I ordered all at the same time were "assorted" and came in 3 different colors. You might want to find these in store so you can visually identify your sling lengths by color when making placements.
Metolius sling
Great sling for making anchors. I'm very happy with the quality of this product. You can't go wrong with REI. The sales representatives are always friendly and bend over backwards to ensure that you have a good experience in the store.
Standard sling
This is a pretty standard sling and does what it's suppose to. It hasn't ripped or teared apart so far. Great use to build anchors or rappelling.
Runner strap/s
This is my third set of these "runners" I actually use them to hang an extra bar on my back deck for chin ups. the first set has been outside (under cover) for about four years and still no fraying or tears.
