Good as a deterrent for Kayaks
I've owned two of these over the years (accidentally left one behind) and they're great for a deterrent. Cable is relatively thin because you need it that way to deal with a cable that long but it's very practical. I loop one end through the seat bracket and the other through/around whatever I'm securing it to, so you get almost the entire length to work with. I also use it to secure two kayaks by looping through one seat bracket and feeding the cable through the other. It also is great for securing them to my roof rack - same concept - loop a seat bracket, then under the rack, then through the other seat bracket and secure. Great product for convenient deterrence if that's what you're looking for.
Failed when locked
The lock engaged partially and then would not open. The inner chamber must have turned slightly, as the cable was tight. It took me two stressed hours to figure out that I had to keep the same number sequence, but move it off the mark one turn to disengage the lock. Now it is completely stuck, although it is off the boat and car. Only used it four or five times.
Best kayak lock
I rented a storage rack at the beach and needed a lock to secure my kayak. Picked up a Lasso Lock at REI last weekend. It was easy to set my own combination and locking my kayak was even easier. I checked other kayaks stored at the beach and this is definitely the best kayak lock. Tough.Secure.Convenient. Highly recommend it!
Not good enough to secure my Carolina 14
I was skeptical that this fairly thin cable lock would do the job. I commute by boat, and lock up at Fletcher's overnight. The lock seemed to be a good deterrent all summer, until someone decided to test it a couple of nites ago and evidently got through the lock and got away with my boat. [$] for a deterrent?
works great--locks to my sailboat railings
I wouldn't have guessed there's a way to lock up something shaped like a kayak. Super clever (and simple) design locked my kayak securely to my boat railing. The combo is easy to set up the first time and the lock is intuitive, simple, and secure. It keeps people honest and lets me sleep at night.
DOES NOT WORK FOR SUP
Despite the claim this can work for a SUP, it does not. It slips right off - no amount of creative coiling will secure this to anything, because the tension must be a) perfectly tight and b) impossible to loosen for this to secure your board. Obviously you can’t get it into that scenario - so it just won’t work. Returning.
Doesn't deter theft
At our storage site thieves have both cut through this or just played with the tension and slipped the chain off one end. Not worth it!
