Good option for SPD pedals
I used to be an avid cyclist when I was younger but now I am more recreational rider. I recently switched from my old toe clips to the SPD pedals. The cleats that came with my shoes were OK but I wanted to be able to get out more quickly and reliably, so I bought the multiple release cleats (SH-56). I went out with one shoe with the original (SH-51) cleats and the other with the new multiple release (56). After trying one foot then another the difference didn't seem so great. However, when I tried both feet at once (as in an emergency), the multiple release came out every time and the original cleats did not. I definitely will stick to the new multiple release cleats.
Great for Mountain Biking
I use these cleats for mountain biking and they work perfectly. After riding for years on flat pedals, I finally decided to go clipless for endurance racing. I was nervous until I discovered these. They are perfect. It is so easy to quickly get a foot on the ground. I like them so much Ive stuck with them for ~6 years now. When I need to put a foot down, I dont think twice about it, it feels like I just lift my foot right off. That said, they still hold perfectly well while pedaling too. I have never had an issue coming unclipped unexpectedly while pedaling (unless the cleats are really worn down.) They are absolutely perfect for beginner mountain bikers learning to ride clipless.
Secure Fit
I am using this cleat set with the TIEM Slipstream Indoor Cycling Shoes (women's) and my Schwinn ic4 indoor bike. Great combination. So much better than riding with regular shoes in pedal cages. Secure clip-in. Easy to clip-out with some practice. No issues with an unintended release during a ride. Seated, standing, sprinting, or heavy tension...I always feel secure.
great shimano product
See my other shimano cleat review [sh-51] as everything there applies here, this product works well and I have no complaints but I will not use it much, personal decision not based on the product but I only want one direction for release, it is simpler for me. I would recomd that if you purchase these also by the SH-51 and try them both you might find one better suited to your cycling style. They defiantly work as advertised and are a great product. Also you might want one of each on as you could dismount differently depending, cycling is very personal, some people might like these because they have more options for getting out of the peddle. Cheers
let me bail out in the last panic moment
I was new to the cleat shoes and pedal thing. Tried SH-51 that came with the shoe. Crashed during the trial ride with a minor scrape on my leg, because the SH-51 held tight unless you twist your, and I wasn't used to horizontally twisting heel out , especially in a losing balance panic, and tried to pull up my feet instinctually. Crash ensued. Tried this SH-56 afterwards. What a relief, so easy to get out. I have since used SH-56 for many rides. Bailed out several times in a panic. Great for beginning cleating. However, I believe SH-51 is more effective for pedaling because the tight hold. I'm going to try SH-51 again with a new pair of more rigid shoes, hopefully get more performance when going up hilly trails.
Awesome Cleats- A must try
I bought these cleats to replace the black cleats since I had lost a screw. (the screws are interchangeable but i figured I would try something different). The multi-directional are way better than the black single direction release. The still hold well and i have yet to pop out but the release is so much easier. After a 30 mile ride twisting out many times at lights and street crossings with the single direction cleats my knees actually felt funny because of the long twist, not with the multi-directional. Also the clip out is quicker especially in emergency stops. TRY THEM.
Replaced my SH-51's for these SH-56.
Best for steep, rocky, technical terrain. Very easy to release. I have been using cleats for 10 years. Recently bought a new pair of shoes and hence new cleats at the same time. Bought the SH-51 Lateral Release cleats. Wrong choice. After my third fall, I took off the SH-51's and replaced with these SH-56's. Everything is good now. I am guessing that the SH-51 is more efficient for racing and smooth trails. But, for me, the SH-56 is better for the technical, super rocky trails.
Easy in and easy out
Use these SPD cleats if you are mostly a casual rider who doesn't want any surprises when you are ready to get out of the pedals. We use them for our gravel rides and on tours where we expect considerable walking along the daily route; road cleats don't meet this requirement but pair these with some comfy shoes where these are recessed and you have a practical combination. They are also good for riders new to clipless pedals. They hold your foot to the pedal but won't plant you on your face if you have to unclip in a hurry.
Excellent! Highly Recommended!
I love to ride, but because I'm mostly on the streets, was not sure about using the cleats, although I knew they are the best and most effecient way to ride. Tried the standard, horizontal-release cleats, was discouraged by the rigidity of release, went back to regular pedals (which I didn't like either). So when the[...] showed me these, jumped at the chance. LOVE THEM. Without any loss of holding onto the pedal, I'm still able to quickly release since I have some ability to lift my heal when turning my foot out. All the difference in the world! Everyone told me about the crashes I would have to do, but has not happened with these. I've had to do some emergency releases while on the road (as can be expected) with no problems and no crashes. A big plus while riding on the streets of L.A.!
Exactly What I Wanted
Extremely easy to clip in and out. Exactly what I was looking for. Highly recommend these, especially for first time clip-less riders and gravel riders.
