Good choice if you're a cleat beginner
Had to go to cleats when I upgraded from a steel-frame "comfort" bike to an aluminum hybrid. These were recommended to me as being highly functional yet easy for a beginner new to cleats to relate to. Amen on both counts. They also have the distinct advantage of not making you walk like a dork when you stop for a latte - you can stride normally and not skid on a tile floor as they are mostly recessed into the sole of your shoes. Upgrading again to a carbon frame road bike so I guess I'll have to get the 3-point dork cleats -- I'll miss these.

The pedals are great, the cleats wear out very quickly if you are putting your foot down at all, which in everyday urban or mountain use is often. '•Made with premium-strength brass for exceptional durability' - this is just offensive.

Difficult to release, could cause serious injury

It is difficult to get them to engage, but I think that will improve as they break in. Unfortunately, they are difficult to disengage, and that could be dangerous. I got the 6-degree float version because my knees suffer if held parallel to the bike, but that also means you have to twist further to get them to release. I am ordering a pair of the easy-release version (still 6-degree float), which I hope will solve the issue. I am not too concerned if they occasionally release when I don't intend them too, but having my foot trapped on the pedal when I need it to be on the ground is not acceptable!

They work

I bought a week ago. Installed on my shoes. They clip into pedals as designed. Why aren't they cheaper?

Great Cleats

These cleats are great. Especially if you like a lot of play in your feet. They are rugged and last for a long time.

Short life

I've had the Crankbrothers Mallet pedals for about 2 seasons now and just had to replace the cleats. Prior to this, I had SPD (Shimano) compatible pedals and in 8 years I replaced the cleats once. With the CB cleats I installed one month ago, they are already getting worn and damaged from rocks when hiking my bike through steep sections. I don't know what type of metal they make these cleats from, but it's way too soft. Presumably by design to drive consumables revenue. Had I known this before buying the Mallet pedals, I wouldn't have. I ride mostly in Colorado, mostly on weekends, so I probably have 5-6 rides on these cleats. The amount of wear is already alarming. The screws soon won't be able to accept an allen wrench to adjust or remove the cleat because they are getting beat up so bad. And at the price they charge for this small amount of metal, it's just not worth it. My shoes are brand new, so the soles are in perfect shape. The only reason I bumped this review to 2 stars is that they do work.

They dont work

They do not work with standard Shamino SPD pedals. Was told they work great with Crankbrothers pedals however. If you doubt me, take a look at their shape compared to other cleats, they are very noticeably different.

Great cleats

They fit every MTB shoe I put them on, easy to get into and out of pedals, and have held up well to bike commuting. I'm buying these again for the next shoes I get.
