Surge in Manistee National Forest
I've been wanting to add one of these to my backpacking gear for sometime now and tested the Surge as a Ranger for The Dyrt in Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forest backcountry. This tool may be a little heavy for those of you who are exquisitely conscientious of pack weight but I love the sturdiness of this device. I'd trade a couple oz for the reassurance that my tool won't bend or snap in a densely (overly) packed backpack any day. Orienting yourself to the features and motions of this device is a simple task and once you're familiarized, it seems as if you can conquer any obstacle that the wilderness throws your way. Not to mention the Surge is essentially everything-in-one and will certainly lighten your list of tools that you need to carry out with you.
a lil closer to Harbor Freight end of the spectrum
Have been happily using this tool for a couple years. Handy, useful, and reliable for lighter use. Just tried to use the awl to pry a piece of plastic out of my bike handlebars. Applied force along the axis of the tool, not sideways, and snapped the tip off with surprising ease, leaving the plastic firmly embedded. I almost never use the awl, and I'm not sure I wouldn't still recommend this product; I'm sure the metal in the pliers is more than thick enough to stand up to further years of use. But I'll definitely handle it more delicately going forward.
Bordering on Overkill, But Who Cares
I purchased the Surge a few days ago, and have not put it down. I have large hands so the larger sized handles prevent the dreaded pinch point near the jaws, all around excellence. The bit kit turns an already great tool into something MacGuyver would be envious of...the only down side is the stiching on the nylon sheath, mine started to unravel as soon as i opened the package. The outside access locking blades eliminate the need for carying an additional lock blade knife, since the blade beats pretty much every entry level knife, and you get a full sized serrated as well. Big plus is the eyeglasses screw driver, it has come in handy from everything to cell phone repairs to all around tinkering.
An entire tool-box in one tool
I have been using my Surge for just over a year now. It is incredibly durable, a little large but you get used to that, this tool will do everything. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW IS THAT THE "blade exchanger" IS ACTUALLY A STANDARD T-SHANK JIG SAW BLADE ATTACHMENT. You can run down to your hardware store and get an assortment of T-shank jig saw blades and make this tool even more versatile. Add the Bit Accessory and this thing is an entire tool kit in one tool. I have used it for fishing, camping, electrical work, carpentry, carving Holloween pumpkins, and have even had to saw through the hard hickory handle on a hammer. The tools may be hard to pull out when it is brand new but a little oil and a break-in period and you're all set. I never leave home without it.
Surge Update
I left a review on this in 2008 and I wanted to leave this update now. In the January 2013 Shot Show, Leatherman announced some upgrades they will be making to the Surge. 1) They will be replacing the standard plier heads with the same type of plier heads currently on the SuperTool 300 - they have replaceable wire cutters. 2) They will be adding a tension spring to the blade exchanger for those of us who use regular t-shank jigsaw blades from the hardware store. The tension spring is intended to hold regular t-shank blades tighter, without wobble. 3) They will be removing the small bit exchanger for the small eye-glass screwdriver and replacing it with a small screwdriver instead. Personally, I don't consider that change to be an upgrade because I like my eyeglass screwdriver but they said they were getting too many of them returned for repairs because people were using them to pry with. Go figure! I've had my surge 6 or 7 years now and still depend on it as a heavy-duty multi-tool. It's one of the best, although a bit heavy for every-day carry.
NO WAY! (a tool so you good you can't believe it)
This is my (one, two, three) fourth Leatherman. All the others are still in service (either in the truck, car, tool box or where-ever) and this was given as a Christmas gift. It replaces an eight year old super tool that has seen a lot of use. This is such a well designed tool. The locking mechanisms, the scissors, and the changeable bits. Love, love, love it. My only gripes are that it's harder to open than previous tools, the bits are these weird flat things, and changing the saw to the file the first time gashed my knuckle open. Other than that, this is a great tool.
You will not be disappointed
This thing is a beast and has many uses. It saves me time and again from going to my tool box and grab a screwdriver or a pliers. I have got multiple leatherman tools and I always have one in my pocket or on my belt. This is not a lightweight tool and you will feel it in your hand and when it it on your belt. This tool has been used while camping, out riding my bike, or just when I notice something needs to be fixed when at the mother in-laws house. If you are on the fence about getting this leatherman or a different brand, get a leatherman. You will not be disappointed.
Surge.....
An upgrade for the Wave (classic) I still own. Both tools are reliable. For everyday use and heavier task, I go for the Surge and it's accessories. For hiking, I use the Wave which is lighter and I don't have to worry losing the accessories, it's all built in. A leather sheath is included but not enough space if you are going to purchase the 21 piece bit kit and the bit driver extender. Having no small screwdriver bit does not affect me, I always have a pen type 4-in-1 screwdriver for my glasses.
Not recommended for hiking/backpacking
To begin, let me say that if I were writing this review on a handyman's type website I would give this a different rating. This is a sturdy, robust, heavy-duty, well-made tool. It's just that for hiking or backpacking I believe it is too big and heavy. The Surge weighs 12-1/2 ounces. By comparison, the Wave weighs 8-1/2 ounces. In the hand the Surge is much heavier and beefier than the Wave. For the trade-off of those 4 ounces you get an awl and blade exchanger and you give up the small eye-glass screwdriver that is on the Wave. The blade exchanger is nice, you can use any t-shank blade that you can get at any hardware store and that gives you the ability to carry a relatively large saw blade for emergencies. If that is important to you and it saves you from carrying a larger saw then it may be worth it to you. For myself, in my daily use, I found the Surge to be too heavy so I went with the Wave. I use the eye-glass screwdriver a lot more than I have used the saw. Either the Wave or the Surge would be a dependable well-made choice. Just be aware of the size and weight difference when you make your choice. Thank you.
Only need scuba gear...
This tool has been AWESOME! I haven't graced long trails yet but the pliers helped with a broken lace situation at the top of a mountain, the operation is fluid for both knives, the saw isn't quick action but it works and the scissors are surprisingly sharp and steady. Kinda neat you can get a 3.5" serrated and straight blade! It took a while to figure out the blade exchange but do you really need the nail file??? If you want all the tools you'll possibly need in the wilderness, here's your device. I will be getting the juice for a smaller short trip option.
