Singular Sensation
Just bought this over the holidays for camping trip in Arkansas. Temps were in the low 20s at night with a brisk wind of prob 15-20 mph. This one piece of gear is perhaps the most useful device I own for keeping warm. I was truley amazed at the utility and adaptability of this garment. It can be used as cap, face, neck protection, or change it up for neck only, head only, or several combinations. Slept with this on and did not even need my hood on Never Summer 0 degree bag. This is absolutely the best designed, cold weather head gear I have come across, and while you may look like the unibomber wearing it, you sure wont be cold. :)
Perfect
I've been searching for years for that perfect winter head gear. I've tried over a dozen different kinds. This is it! Very warm. Not restricting but still moves with your head. I can adjust it so my glasses don't fog. It's pretty darn wind-proof. You can wear it a bunch of different ways to suit the current conditions. I wear a ball cap under it just fine. Handles single digits with no issues. Keeps the neck warm and protected from blowing snow. This one is a total keeper. It's going everywhere with me. Try this before you get a tight fitting balaclava! I've had many and none were as good as this. I'm buying another because I want to be sure to have a spare for years down the road.
Essential for cold weather hiking
I purchased the first balaclava for myself and it was so nice that I also purchased one from my wife. I wear a size 8 hat, which makes it difficult for me to find headwear that fits. This one is roomy and comfortable. I like the integrated pull-up/pull-down face mask. On very cold and windy days I where earmuffs under the balaclava. What I really like is that it is much warmer, and easier to manage, than a scarf and knit hat. One word of caution, I had to tie extra knots at each end of the elastic cord to prevent the adjustable locks from sliding off.
Warm and adjustable
I don't know why I struggled with a hat and scarf for so long. The adjustable portion over the nose means it doesn't slip down, and the fleece is incredibly warm and blocks wind well. I also push down the "hood" portion if I need a little more air and it turns into a very nice scarf.
Smartest winter accessory for women
Without a doubt, the best winter purchase for me. I am perpetually cold and loathe to venture out of the house here in New England between November and April. This lets me do it. Not tight and constricting like other balaclavas. The side pulls let you adjust snugness. The fit means you look more Jackie O than swimming cap sporty. Very convenient to raise and lower the piece that covers mouth and nose—that’s a godsend. Absolutely love it, and would be delighted to see more colors.
I'll never get anything else
So I didn't technically buy this. I found it in my house and no one claimed it so I pounced on it. As far as snowboarding and cycling go if it's cold enough to want something for your face this is perfect. The two draw chords make all the adjustments you'll ever need. When both are all the way loose it fits more like the hood of a sweatshirt with a warm neck. It can be worn all pulled down around the neck, only face pulled up, only hood pulled up, hood and face below nose, hood and face above nose, and hood and face above nose tightened all the way up. Each position is great for a different temperature. If I don't have this on the Mountain I'd almost rather not go. It makes riding 100% enjoyable. No sunburn/windburn, no cold face, no cold head and snowboarding goggles fit nicely over the eye opening. I have used other styles of balaclava but long story short, you should get this one.
Soft & Cozy
I gave this to my partner as a gift about a month ago. She has worn it several times when we went for walks in Vermont's cold winter weather. It is warm and soft and comfortable. The cord adjustments allow easy access and can be tightened to secure it in place. It can be left around the neck area or pulled up to cover head, ears and chin or all the way to cover most of the face. After trying a different balaclava that was too tight and uncomfortable, she is very happy with this one!
Almost perfect
This is an excellent product. The only problem I had is one of the elastic cords pulled off its attachment point after about 3 years of use; to be fair, that might have been something the washing machine did. I fixed this easily by snipping the cord, fusing the end with a match, then sewing it back. No biggie. This is great for sleeping in, walking, hiking, working outside or inside. The comfort is great, like any fleece against your skin. The cinches are good quality spring-loaded devices. One cinch tights it around the chin, the other, around the browline. It is fleece, so you don't get ear noise from it. If it gets to hot on top, I pull mine down to function as a neck warmer, or if I want to wear a cap, I pull it down for a neck warmer. It won't choke you like standard neck warmers. Also, a baseball hat can be worn on the underside, if working outside and the sun is out. It is not something I would wear for a long intervals in strong cold wind, since the wind cuts through it, as it does with standard fleece. I usually go to a cordura or duck shell type pull-over with the knit neck band and front cord cinch. Cathart makes a good one of these, although it is bulky and stiff.
good not outstanding
keeps you warm, however it would be better to have ventilation for the nose. tends to fog glasses
Warm lightweight and fits nice
I bought this right before it got down to minus 8. I wore it for two days until it warmed up. I did like wearing it. It's warm and all those other things you want. But I kind of feel like a bank robber when wearing it. And it's thick enough that I kind of have to choose between it and the snug hat I have.
