The BEST if you know how to use it
This stuff is great for road bikes, IF you use it properly. A lot of folks who complain that they don't get good results with Clean Ride or other "dry" lubes are applying the stuff to a drivetrain that already has "wet" lube residue on it, and/or they aren't letting the "dry" lube dry before they ride. Those things are a no-no. Take the time to do it right--strip your drivetrain of any old lube, grime, residue, let it dry fully, then start fresh with Clean Ride. Lube every 150 miles or so AFTER a ride, not just before, so it can dry fully before you go turning the cranks again. I've tried a bunch of different lubes and for my road bike, nothing beats Clean Ride.
Good for short rides in dry, dusty conditions
I use this on my commuting bike during the dry summer months. I commute ~12 miles/day on a dusty gravel trail. When the rest of my bike is covered in a fine dust the chain remains reasonably clean. I've found that you need to apply this lube far more often than other, wetter, lubes (duh, it sloughs off to keep the chain clean). I can ride ~30 miles before I feel like I need to reapply. THIS IS NOT FOR WET OR MUDDY CONDITIONS (which is stated on the bottle and is obvious if you research dry lubes at all). For me the trade off of frequent application is worth it so I don't have to fully clean, degrease, and lube my drive train every week.
did not work at all for me
used this on my dura-ace 7900 drivetrain with horrible results. seemed to last maybe 30-40 miles, then my shifts were slow, and i started getting squeeking from my chain. i used about half a bottle over several weeks trying to figure out what the problem was, but once i switched back to my old lube, my shifts were fast and clean, the squeaking went away, and the drivetrain is like new again. i was happy to toss the half used bottle in the trash. **i ride between 100-150 miles a week, compete in triathons and use a citrus degreaser between lubes. had good luck with rock n roll blue as well as tri-flow.
The Best Lube if used properly
I’ve been using this stuff for quite some time so I figured I’d chime in. This is the stuff. You need to completely strip your chain before using. Run your (preferably new) chain through a chain cleaner with full strength degreaser or soak it in mineral spirits. Rinse and completely dry it. Apply it heavily the first time. This is a noisy lube. You don’t need to relube when it gets a bit louder. I relube every 80-100 miles and completely clean every 300 miles or so.
Still the Best for My Bike
I've tried many different chain lubricants and I always keep coming back to White Lightning. I reapply more often, but the drive stays very clean. It keeps the chain whisper quiet, and works well in the mountains around my home. On the down side, it doesn't last as long as some lubes, and if you spill on your wheels it leaves a waxy residue that's kind of tough to wash off. I also think that it doesn't hold up in the sandy slickrock trails of Southern Utah very well, but not sure most lubricants would do any better.
No more floppy, oily chains.
I have been using wax lubricant for years. Dirt shedding, dumps the dust that wears down the bushings. Just wipe it off with a paper towel to stick your ride in the trunk. Barely/doesn't need to degrease to apply more for the next ride. The wax is mixed in an evaporating solvent that needs to sit 30 minutes to set, it's not for spontaneous grease & go. You can't mix or switch between oil based lubes, dedicate your ride to White Lightning for longer lasting & cleaner chain.
It's All I Ever Use On My Chains
I've used White Lightning Clean Ride for years. I prefer it over oils, which become dirty and gritty in a hurry. I apply it using latex gloves, cupping one hand on the underside of the chain as I apply the lubricant, then crank the chain backwards through my hand, then run the chain through a rag or paper towel to remove excess. I also use Clean Ride on my Speedplay cleats.
Great lube to keep the chain clean
I use this lube almost exclusively for road, gravel and mtb bike riding. This lube dries and will not pick up dirt and so the chain stays much cleaner. Being dry it will not mark your skin or clothes. You can even handle the chain without getting your hands covered in oil, like oil lubes. Note that metal wear from the chain itself will still make the chain "dirty" after a while, but it is not the gritty type of dirt from road and dirt riding that can really wear the chain quickly. I ride every day and re-lube a couple times a week. I have used this lube for over a decade and have been very happy with it. I do use a more sticky oil lube if I will be riding in rain a lot as White Lighting does come off the chain easier in the rain, But if you do only a couple hours in the rain this will be fine.
Best bike lube I ever used
This is the only bike lube I use now. As long as you do not put on excessive amount that it starts to build up, the lube is self-cleaning. When the dirt builds up, the bits of wax in the lube flakes off and you are left with a clean chain. My only complaint is that its a bit thin and the opening on the bottle is a little too big so that when you turn the bottle upside down to apply the lube, a stream of it shoots out wasting and getting the ground all waxy. As it gets hotter, more it shoots out.
perfect for arid climates!
great stuff, have been using for sometime now. A bit pricey
