Small, portable, and did I mention small
I wanted a tiny pen, and this is a tiny pen. I carried one in my Leatherman Wave case (the elastic sides of the nylon case act as a perfect sheath for the pen), and was never for want of a writing utensil. The instances it came in handy are innumerable -- especially with a Moleskine in the back pocket. The big sell is that it is still a Fisher space pen. The ink is perhaps not the smoothest, but it always flows so the pen is always reliable. Unlike regular ballpoints, it is guaranteed to work on, say, the back of your hand, or any other surface you may need to jot a note on. This is not a desk pen, however. Not that any of you were under that impression.
It's a pen- on steroids
It's a great pen. If I could have, I would have given it 4.5 stars, because my only complaint was that it was a little skinny for me (I have big hands). Other than that, it was great! I highly recommend it. Oh, and right when I got it, I did a test. I took some Rite in the Rain waterproof paper, and was able to write underwater and upside down, but sadly I couldn't test it in space :(
great for ultralight backpacking journal writing
This ultralightweight pen slips easily through the wire binding of "write in the rain" journals I use for my backpacking trip log. Unfortunately, the cap also easily slips off the pen base and out of the wires. I nearly lost the cap several times. That said, after using multiple journals I still have my original red pen from about 2009 - probably because I bought it in red! Although Fisher has another pen with a tethered cap, it does not store in the binding. As others have noted it is not something to write more than brief notes, especially in wind and/or with cold fingers.
most reliable small pen
At less than 4 inches long and a quarter inch in diameter, these Stowaway space pens are easy to carry round. When you open it up, it is 5 inches long and easy enough to write with. Unlike most other pens, the ink lasts for years without drying up or leaking and always writes smoothly. Drop one in your backpack and you can count on it still working a year from now, as long as you don't lose it.
A wonderful little stowaway!
This is a wonderful little pen, with emphasis on little. I wouldn't want to write a novel with it, as it it quite thin and thus not the most comfortable pen to write with. I've found that it's more comfortable once you realize that you don't have to bear down at all to get the ink to flow, so you don't have to grip it tightly. It works as advertised, especially with a Rite in the Rain notepad. I didn't try writing through grease, but it can certainly write through water and at any angle. It slips nicely in the spiral binding of the small journal pad and stays put--which is good, because it's so small, it's easy to lose. Don't buy a black one unless you like playing hide-and-seek with yourself; I got a red one and am glad I did. I have not had the issues with ink globs that others have reported. Mine delivers ink consistently and uniformly.
Write Ultralight
Very light weight, a little uncomfortable to hold, I wouldn't want to write a novel or even a short story with it. Essentially a refill with an aluminum shell around it. Wish shell came in red if you drop it in the field, could be hard to find
Handy
Very handy little pen. Ink cartridge is replaceable. I wrapped some orange tape around it to make it harder to lose
Great Pen!
I use this pen for taking notes out on the trail and I love it. I also keep one in my wallet since it is so small. I just wish I could find it more places.
does what it's supposed to
I bought this pen for use in my Rite-in-the-Rain field journal. The ink writes very smoothly and has lasted through substantial rain and dry conditions. However, for the price of the pen and it's likely use out in the field, I wish that the cap was in some way attached to the body of the pen or there was a clip to keep the pen attached somewhere.
Almost there.
Cap comes of all the time. perfect for putting everywhere. Needs bright colors to make it easy to see.
