Almost too much flavor
For a dehydrated meal, this one did okay. As someone who has used these a lot I would say 4/5 stars. I certainly wouldn't eat it on any kind of regular campout (5 stars) but for backpacking it is pretty good (4 stars). I cooked according to the directions including stirring half way through the time (8 of 15 minutes). At that half way point it smelled incredible. When I went to eat it, it was almost too spicy (not hot spicy, but too many spices) which is probably why it smelled so great. I have 1 or two crunchy bites which was likely due to me not digging down into those corners at the mid-point stir, but otherwise it cooked perfectly. Overall 4 stars, maybe 3.5 just because of too much spice although after days on the trail of eating the same nuts, chocolate, dried fruit it would probably be much appreciated.
Good for Backpacking
I had this while camping at a state park. It cooked per the directions. There were a few extra crunchy parts that I don't really think were meant to be there. The flavor was good. You could definitely tell there was cheese. I transferred to a bowl because using a traditional backpacking spoon is difficult aith thw depth of the package, and it's meant to be two servings. It is definitely a good option for vegetarians, where backpacking meals can be hard to come by.
Pleasantly Surprised
I tried this vegetarian lasagna while on a short backpacking trip. I was pleasantly surprised. Although it doesn’t look like the standard lasagna, it tasted much better than I expected. It was very flavorful, tasty, and easy to eat with a spoon. I was at about 7200 feet above sea level and it rehydrated without any problems. It is very easy to prepare. Rehydration time was a total of 15 minutes (8 minutes, stir then another 7 minutes). It was almost ready after 8 minutes and at that point, it was very hot. After the 7 additional minutes, it was done, but not as hot as I would have liked on a cold day. The next time I try this product, I will see if I can shorten the cooking time so I can eat when it is hotter. The serving size on the package said 2 servings which were more than I could eat (the dogs were more than happy to help me finish this). I’m only 120-pounds and I think 1.5 servings would have been perfect for me. If you are a larger person, you may want to supplement this with a side dish, or dessert! The only thing I did not like about this was the aftertaste. It was very subtle, but it was still there. Pros: tastes very good, easy to prepare, a little leftover for the pooches Cons: slight aftertaste
Disappointed
I prepared this product at low altitude and used a timer to follow package directions exactly. I found I had to stir it with a knife because too much was sticking to a spoon. The bag does tand on its own well. After the 15 min prep it was not as hot as I hoped and if preparing at high altitude instructions say 5 min more for every 5,000 ft. In a high country situation I worry it would loose too much heat. Flavor did not make me think of lasagna. It was salty but mostly heavy oregano flavor which left me with a kind of bitter aftertaste. I had my husband try it and he would only eat two bites before asking me not to purchase in future. The noodles were dry and bits of pepper and tomatoe were tough. Checking the package you can see it is very high in sodium which might be OK if you have been sweating a lot but would not be good for some consumers. Overall, I can not recommend this product.
Solid supper after a day in the outdoors
REI offered to send me goodies in exchange for an honest review and sent me Backpacker's Pantry Vegetable Lasagna. Unfortunately, I'm not in backpacking shape right now. Good thing backpacking food works just as well for refueling when you get back to your car-camp after a day of hiking as it does at the end of a day hauling a full pack! Backpacker's Pantry Vegetable Lasagna has their familiar noodles and tomato with the flavor and seasoning you probably already know. This variation is tasty and rehydrates well - not too salty and had a surprising amount of umami flavor for a vegetable variation of lasagna. In the future, I'll likely pack along some grated cheese to add at the last minute and maybe some additional seasoning.
This is a standard for me almost every trip.
I backpack quite a bit, and this is a regular for me. AS a vegetarian, I don't have endless options. And some of those are not very healthy. The risotto, pesto & alfredo dishes have literally 1 gram of fiber. And some are just too spicy (hot) for me. Some of these lower reviews are.... silly. Okay, you won't find it at Wolfgang Puck's. For consistency, you wanted whole lasagna sheet noodles???? Yes, it is very chopped up. Helllloooo, it's a backpack meal. But, it's fiber is decent, good carbs but not so high a to cause diabetic shock. It tastes like.... lasagna. As I said, this is a staple for me at least once every trip.
Delicious and flavorful taste.
I was actually really skeptical about this, did not expect such a flavorful taste. We actually made this one and another by this brand side by side and this particular flavor (Lasagna) was way more tasty. With creamy tomatoe sauce, it genuinely tasted like Lasagna. 3 of my friends got a bite and they were instantly hooked. Definitely my go to backpacking meal from now on.
Backpacking da pasta
I thought this tasted pretty great after some big backpack miles. I did have some crunchy parts, but perhaps my stirring was not quite adequate. Full package is only enough for 1 hungry hiker when you look at the Calories. Luckily I sweat some as that sodium load is fairly stout when you eat the whole container. A lot of my homemade dehydrated meals do not have fat so this was an easy upgrade with cheese. Toss in a red pepper flake packet and I'd definitely have again.
Overall a tasty meal
This product was easy to make and overall pretty tasty. Just add boiling water, stir and wait 8 minutes, stir again and wait 7 min and it was done. I have to say the bag was sturdy and didn't feel like it would tip over and it sealed very easy. That's important to me since my hands hurt from arthritis. After the first 8 minutes the meal seemed ready and I know if I was actually out camping instead of in my kitchen, I would have ate it then. But I wanted to follow the directions and it turned out good, although a very soft texture overall. The flavor was very good. I have to say I was surprised at how good it was. You can definitely taste the Parmesan cheese, which I liked. Both my husband and I said it was good, and it would be especially tasty after a long day of hiking. The only negative I have is the 1760 mg of sodium for the package.
Delicious. Soupy. Good for one person for one meal
Pros: This lasagna is delicious. (If my homemade lasagna tasted this good, I would be so happy.) It is cheesy and tomatoey and the spices are just right. “Lasagna” may be a bit of a misnomer for this product though, because it has thin noodles and isn’t layered. And it is soup-like in consistency. Maybe use a bit less water than the package calls for? Great amount of food for one person, for one meal. Cons: Soupy. Not enough food for a meal for two people, but maybe that’s obvious from the calorie listing (320 calories per serving, 620 calories per package).
