It should be in your tool box.

This sewing awl isn't something you use often but when you need it there's nothing else like it. I already have one at home but needed it on the road and bought a new one for one job. If you're looking at it on this page you need it so buy it. I've fixed backpacks, luggage, sewn soles on shoes (through existing holes) and leather straps. The awl beats leather needles and a pair of needle nose pliers hands down. Make sure you buy extra thread since you'll have this thing forever but you won't remember where to buy the thread when you run out.

bulletproof

Ordered this as a few repair projects had been building up. Finally ordered it in hopes to repair a heavy vinyl/naugahyde type material that I had been quoted over $400 to replace. $10 later and 30 minutes of my time including reading the directions and it's fixed. Should have gotten this long ago. Definitely should be a fixture in all outdoors persons tool chests. Now on to my backpack straps, duffel straps, stirrup leathers, boots, etc. Overall idiot proof. Works good, lasts long time.

Awesome low tech tool

I am in the military, got my stich awl in '03 used it to repair the seams on my combat boots (which I wore for an additional 3 years after the repair), the boot leather finally ripped through leaving me to buy a new pair of boots but the stitching held strong and true right up to the end. The concept is straight forward and the directions are just as easy to understand. This should be in every adventurers tool kit.

Worked great to modify backpack straps

I purchased this to be able to modify some backpack straps which were too thick to run through my sewing machine. Works great with Gutermann TERA 80 fine thread. I didn't even need to remove the waxed thread from the internal spool. I could just wrap the amount of fine thread I needed around it and through the awl. It did take a little time and practice to use this, but I was able to get the hang of it. It's disappointing however that I had to buy a separate 3 pack of needles from Speedy Stitcher just to get the #4 Small Straight Needle required to use for fine polyester thread. It was inexpensive, but it should have been included with the sewing awl. Why doesn't REI itself sell the needle 3 pack as well, seeing that people are probably going to need it? Also, the awl has internal storage slots for the needles, but only for 2 of the 3 types of needles it can use.

AWESOME REPAIR TOOL

I have used the speedy stitcher awl to fix my backpacks and even repair the canvass exterior to my Jeep. It makes easy, tight, tough stitches. The thick wax thread is up to almost any job. I love this tool. I take it in my Jeep on extended trips so if someone has a tent, backpack or other equipment failure, I can fix the item on the spot.

One of the best tools I've ever owned

I've had this essential tool for over 50 years, and it still keeps on ticking! Sewed many thick materials just fine. Can't imagine life without having this in the tool arsenal. The picture/description seems just like mine - unchanged. Understandable; I don't see how it could be improved.

Stitch in time!

This little speedy stitcher was just what the doctor ordered! Worked as advertised and was $18 cheaper than the fabric store. I used it to stitch a Velcro tab onto my motorcycle saddle bag. (Which is leatherette/vinyl) make sure that you know which side the stitch will show through. Excellent. I can see using this for a favorite pair of hiking boots with a popped seam or canvas bags, etc...

Works great

Purchased this to fix a couple of holes in our tent to avoid buying a new one and the awl was exactly what we needed. In about 15 minutes, I patches up 2 holes and added a new loop. The paper instructions are difficult to understand, but I located a youtube video and that was immensely helpful to show me how easy it was.

great tool

Easy tool to use ... just pay attention to the direction that you thread the needle. If you do it wrong, it is difficult to form the loop to pass the thread thru when when stitching. Don't ask me how I know!
