Good For Rappeling and Top Rope Climbing
This is a solid workhorse rope. I've got a couple and have used them for lots of top rope use, rappelling into caves, group rappelling use and anchoring rope for climbing as well as highlines and the occasional zip line or slack rope. Overall, it's a fairly versital rope. It handles a lot of abrasion before it begins showing signs. It's low elasticity is great for typical static rope use and these things seem to last forever. The downside of it's durability is weight and thickness. There are certainly lighter and smoother feeding ropes out there. If however you are looking for something to take abusive work and are willing to accept the trade offs of more difficult handling and more weight to haul around it can be a valuable asset.
Don’t see enough cross sport, in my case hunting,
Purchased for DRT style saddle hunting, me I don’t like a lot of bounce on my tether. Been up and down a dozen trees and it shows no wear to speak of, started out as stiff as a banker’s smile so I soaked and dried it a few times- which is what we used to do back in the dawn of time. Still too stiff for a Blake’s hitch so I’m using a split tail, it’s a thick rope- but that’s what I wanted for winter use and my 63 year old hands. Incidentally I purchase a lot of gear for hunting from REI.
Excellent Rope for Rappelling
I have used this rope for recreational rappelling for about 10 years (on a single rope). I was very surprised that the rope would have lasted as long as it did considering the use and wear that I have placed on it. This is an excellent rope, and the fact it is still availble after at least 10 years should in itself speaks volumes about its worth. Wrapping the rope in a commercially available protective sheath, will definitely extend the life and help with abrasion. I have recommended this rope to anyone I know entering rappelling.
Great rope for rappelling
I've been a Rappel Master in the U.S. Army for a few years now and this is the most durable rope I've seen. It will not stretch like climbing rope. I've also used it for rope Bridges and it shows no sign of wear and tear. Great rope, only type I will use from now on.
good for the right purpose
I agree with Sam B above. It is 11.4mm which does not fit even the new Grigri+. REI needs to update the specs. You cannot rappel with a grigri or ATC device. Maybe you can with a figure 8, I’ll try next time out. However, I bought this primarily to use as a setup rope in order to anchor a top rope master point to trees back from the edge. Works great for that and at 32Kn is more than enough.
Great Durable Rope
This is a great rope for what I use it for, which is practicing urban rappelling. its very durable and fray resistant considering the surfaces and anchoring points I use.
This Is My Rope
Finally got my hands on this and mine ended up being 11.4mm - 46m. I love this rope. It handles great. There may be some smaller knots you can't tie with it but it holds a bowline just fine as well as most of your common climbing knots and hitches. I bought and returned another 11mm rope that was way more stiff than this rope so this feels great imo. You might be able to cram it into a gri gri and force feed it but this is really for tactical rappel and gri gri probably isn't best for those situations. I had no problems getting my gri gri into rappel on it so there may be some applications for some devices with this rope in top rope work. I really wish they put a line around the middle of the rope. The line helps me a lot with coiling/deploying the rope and would have made handling this rope a lot easier. The line missing is my only complaint. Rope is strong, handles great, doesn't stretch, isn't too heavy, and looks awesome. It even fits in to my rope bag with my 70m climbing rope. I will be buying more of this. Tag lines are amazing things. I use this to tactically rappel with my dog.
Strong but stiff
Good quality and durability as I'd expect from BW, but I have to give it low marks for knot-ability. It's quite stiff and will probably take a lot of use to soften up enough to knot easier.
Can take a beating!
This rope is a dream for route developers. I’m typically the type of guy to have two fixed lines as mental protection, but the durability and strength of this single line gives me the confidence I need. 11.4mm of rope is mega bomber for rounding over an edge, even the ones that are a little sharp or jagged. After a single use, I will admit there were some tufts of mantle sheathing coming up, but the integrity still seems to be there. Multiple uses reveals really no change beyond standard wear to the sheath, but of course, no core showing after moderate use (which, thank goodness, I’d be disappointed if there was). I see a lot of reviews saying it’s hard to throw a knot in this line- though aside from a clove hitch or maybe an extra tight basket knot, it’s pretty easy to move around and keep tight. I was skeptical of how it would feed through a Petzl GriGri (3rd generation): I had no real issues aside from some slight catching when I’m pairing with an ascender for a 2:1- even then, it’s pretty much fine. It catches the rope, and releases fine when the lever is pulled. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with BlueWater for this one. Just like their signature webbing, they’ve done it again with this bomber static line. As far as weight goes, it feels pretty similar to a standard 9.8mm 60m rope, but of course is shorter at ~45m if you choose the 150’ option. Not really breaking any records in this department. 8.5/10, I recommend it for its intended uses
I've never assaulted anyone with this rope...
but it has certainly gotten me into some trees. Seems like good rope, fits in my Petzl RIG nicely.
