I love my proton and thought the heavy weight one would be too warm. I used this almost every time I went out this season. I either run really hot or really cold so I would typically take off my mid layer when touring regardless. This mid layer is so warm and still breathable.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Absolutely love this jacket for colder days climbing ice in Michigan. I usually wear it in temps 20 degrees to -20 and really enjoy it then. I will climb in it and not get too hot or cold. Happy with the fit, especially when wearing it with my harness. Would totally buy again.
This is a really cozy piece. I love the brushed fleece lining in the hand pockets, the huge amount of pockets (like, 6! Perfect for hats and snacks and dog treats), as well as the relaxed feel of the piece. I’m a medium in the Proton and Atom lines and this size fits me well with a fleece underneath, or with my large shell on top. The heavyweight is breathable and great for chilly dog walks and as a warm synthetic layer under my shell on rainy cold days. For me personally it’s too warm to wear for any high output activity, but I run very warm when moving and freeze when static. I was trying to decide between the atom and proton, but eventually went with the proton because of its breathability and pockets. Really happy with my purchase!
I love the proton line : far more breathable than the Atom line, even when cycling or brisk walking. The (minimal) weight of all the Protons is also great, as is the soft touch (soft inner pocket lening, soft cuffs, no chin-abrasion, which is an issue for me with the Beta insulated jacket). The compatability of the hood with my cycling helmet is also great and the 4 pockets. The heavyweight is a bonus in European winters, it is warm enough so that I don’t need to take a shell jacket in dry conditions. The only reason I don’t give a 5 star rating is Arc’teryx sizing : large is 42, xl jumps to 46 … why don’t make large 42-44 …
I am very happy with this item. It feels light (not bulky) and very comfortable to wear. I really like the soft feeling lining. I have worn it in cold, windy and lightly rainy conditions and it has stayed dry and kept me warm. When I do get a little hot it breathes well and I don't get too sweaty. I like the fit but I am 5'7 so I do think it may be a little long on someone shorter.
This was my first employee purchase. I wear this everyday, it is actually getting kind of gross because I need to wash it but I wear it everyday. Now I just need to actually take this touring. It seems decently packable for being a synthetic piece. It has a bomber-jacket type fit but with a nice warm hood. It makes me feel like I have a nice warm parcel of air around me and I am getting a nice hug. It is very breathable and light, but not flimsy and delicate. It really keeps a comfortable micro-climate. It keeps me warm, but is also air permeable enough that I don't overheat. I like the pocket detail and it really adds to the style of the hoody. I wish they made this in more colours.
Hands down my favorite hoody from Arc’Teryx! It is made from a thick cozy waterproof material that keeps me warm on cold days and dry on wet days. I also love the design of the chest pockets which almost feel hidden. Warm. Durable. Lightweight. You just cant go wrong with this one!
I’m obsessed. This completes my Proton family. What I am loving about this piece is the added warmth for ice coast resort skiing/snowboarding. I hate layering a ton to resort ski and I am typically freezing here where the lift line is long, the chair ride is chilling and not enough of a down to warm up or overheat. Using with a shell at -5C and below. I find this significantly warmer than the proton LT. It also has a baggier fit. I wear a small in both the LT and FL and they just fit but don’t leave a ton of room for layering. The Small heavyweight I can fit a heavy base layer and an oversized fleece under it. For reference I am 5’10 134lbs. I wear a medium Sentinel shell over. I think this will be a versatile piece on the east coast for sure
I had to return the Proton. The fit just doesn’t work for me. The shoulders and arms are fine, with enough room for another jacket or a thick sweater underneath. However, the lower part and the waist don’t fit well—the belly sticks out completely, and the bottom is too long, extending over the hips, which makes it impractical for active use. Where have the athletic jackets gone that are designed for people with muscular arms and a narrow waist? I hope Arc’teryx adjusts the fit of the Proton, just like they did with the new Atom—providing enough room in the shoulders without being too long or too wide. I’ll wait and hope that in the new season, the Proton Heavyweight gets an updated fit because the quality and materials of the jacket are truly excellent.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've worn the proton hoody for years, and it's generally warm enough for jaunts around town in an Alaskan winter. When I saw that Arc'teryx came out with a heavier version I had to have it. It fits slightly larger/roomier than the mid weight proton. I almost thought about sizing down but didn't. I suppose they made it bigger so you could layer but I don't think you need to layer since it's already a heavier coat, but that's just my opinion. This is my new favorite jacket for sure.
