New Version - Bad zipper and Useless Drop-pockets
This review is for the new Heavyweight version of this jacket. I want to like this jacket, but a couple of the main features are a deal breaker for me. I have issues with the main zipper and the drop pockets. The main zipper will unzip itself without even touching the zipper pull. Grab on either side of the zipper and lightly pull apart and you will undress yourself like Clark Kent changing into Superman... and I'm not exaggerating. As for the drop pockets, Arcteryx tried to kill 2 birds with one stone by making the outer pockets and the drop pocket one and the same. When you stick your hand in the outer pockets, your hand is in the material that makes up the drop pocket. If you put something like a water bottle in the pocket, it feels super awkward because your hand, in the front pocket, has to contort backward around the water bottle. This is a horrible design.
Disappointed cut
The new Proton Heavyweight Hoody has too much room in the stomach area, which is disappointing. The armpit area is also tighter than in my 2021 Proton LT, so it seems they haven’t made more room for layering—just adjusted the fit. This change means it’s no longer the athletic cut that the Proton line is known for. I’m not sure why they went this route, as Proton jackets are designed for high-output activities. This looser fit might make more sense in a city-oriented line. I’ve always chosen Arc'teryx for their precise cuts and athletic fit. With so many competitive products offering similar functionality at a lower price, now it is just not the case any more. The proton hw does have great 50d fabric material which feel much more robust than the atom line and my proton lt. The hood had 60gsm insulation but it is a bit heavy and drags the entire jacket backward, though it might be ok after a period of wearing. I own more than 30 pieces of Arcteryx products and almost 90 percent of the time the cut is way better than other outdoor brands. I will still recommend this product to people have small lats narrower shoulders or a bit of belly
Hi Charlie. Thanks for sharing your feedback on the Proton Heavyweight Hoody. We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the current fit and that it did not suit your needs. We will pass your comments to our team.
Hood is WAY too Big
Great looking jacket. Great fitting jacket. Great materials. But the hood (as is with most of Arcteryx's hoods) is WAY too big. I wish Arcteryx wouldn't make their hoods on their jackets with the assumption that you will be wearing a helmet every time you use the hood. When I pulled this hood up over my head (without a helmet), it hangs all the way down to my mouth blocking my vision. I have to fold the hood way up which looks terible. This is, otherwise, a great jacket. Arcteryx makes the best jackets. They should come up with a way to adjust the hoods on their jackets, so they don't hang down over your face so much.
Great on its own or layered!
Great standalone jacket thanks to the more durable outer materials and added insulation. Compared to the Proton the fit is a little more loose, but I would say it fits just like any other brand's jackets fit (in other words, its not overly loose, just a little loose compared to the standard athletic arcteryx fit). Love the added dump pockets and lined hand pockets compared to what you get on the Proton. Also prefer the grey logo on this versus the Proton as it gives the jacket a slightly more lowkey feel to it. Will be paired with my goretex shell to serve as a go-to system for any winter weather conditions.
Hit or miss with strong chemical odor on black
Excellent material. I have the Sabre midlayer and regular proton in black. The difference besides the fit and function is of course the horrible chemical smell. I refuse to take the chance to wash it out and lose the ability to return it. My question is: why don’t the Sabre midlayer and proton hoody which are the same material and color have the same awful smell??? Frustrating for sure. Fit of Thai jacket is slightly baggy even for me at 6’ 205 lbs ( give or take) in a size large. I would absolutely keep this jacket for cold weather hiking if not for the odor of the black dye. I will likely return it and try the Eden color instead. Hopefully that one doesn’t stink as badly.
Talk about being warm!
I've worn this jacket in extreme conditions, from ice climbing in -10°F to strolling through the wintery streets of Chicago. No matter the setting, one thing remains constant—I stay incredibly warm. Even though I tend to sweat quickly, the synthetic insulation keeps me warm without overheating. Whether for high-energy activities or just braving the cold, this jacket is my absolute go-to!
Nice upgrade to the old Proton AR
So far so good. Love the fit, weight, durability, and warmth. Slightly more roomy than the old Proton LT/AR. Hoping this cut will allow me to move more freely when I'm ice climbing and also layer less. TBD on the ice climbing since the season isn't here yet, but I think this will be exactly what I wanted. Only downside is that it might be a little too warm for those days when it's 30F and sunny, but I think it will be perfect for ice climbing 95% of the time. Definitely a classic that will succeed for Arc in the years to come. I'm 5'9" @ 160lbs and the fit really couldn't be better in a Med.
A jacket in need of an application
Super cool and appears well-made. Love the big chest pockets. Returning because, sounds strange, but not really seeing a place for this jacket in the mountains. Way too warm for exertion or anything uphill, not warm enough to really be a belay/stationary jacket for its weight and bulk. The "heavyweight mid-layer" is a pretty small niche. Outer material seems to tow the line between tough and breathable as advertised. The new sizing is bigger/looser and will be a major annoyance to those used to the prior more tailored fit and, in this case, exacerbates the above problems.

Silky smooth
Amazing hoody, perfect weight, fits great and the material feels soft to touch. Ample pockets and nice hood ajustment. I got caught in the rain and it kept me dry.
