I was surprised by the quality and that the large fit well, but still gave some room. The hood is way too big, though and even using the draw strings it covers my entire head and blocks vision (i do not have a small head).
The styling is really nice, but the fabric is not breathable, at all. It’s warm, but too warm. The first time I wore it it was 10° outside and I took my dog for a walk and came back and was completely soaked in sweat underneath with only a light thermal top on. The other thing I haven’t been able to figure out is I understand that the hood has two drawstrings, but there is no device to keep those drawstrings in place. When I have to pull the hood tight, it’s fine for a while but then, without a fastener, the strings, just work themselves loose, and I have to continue to adjust it.
The fit is good, not too roomy. It looks good and keeps me warm. But I have to say, the front pockets are really frustrating. They are almost too small to fit your phone in, let alone your hands. They are also positioned so low on the jacket that you can't comfortably walk with your hands in your pockets. . . or access what's in them, which makes me want to return it. Never experienced this before on any jacket. I had to look at other jackets to realize what was wrong. The standard is a bigger opening so you can access the pockets from a natural angle without having to pull up the jacket to insert your hand in from the side. Unfortunately it wasn't something I realized until I started using the jacket. Love stio but low hanging fruit like this hurts
The Colton is a poorly designed jacket when compared to the Hometown Down Hoodie, which I love. -The hood is comically large and can only be used effectively when wearing a helmet- basically useless otherwise. The drawstring adjustment does not work well. -The sleeve cuffs are very uncomfortable because there is no inner cuff. When tightening with the velcro straps, the cuffs get bunched up and is simply very uncomfortable. A bulky jacket such as this one needs an inner cuff. -The bottom hem is too loose, with no inner hem to block the wind, and the drawstring doesn't look right when pulled tighter. -The fabric is very noisy when moving. -450 fill seems low for how big/expensive the jacket is- should be 650. I own (too) many down jackets and this one misses the mark.
A waterproof insulated jacket with windstopper?!?! The stuff dreams are made of! Been looking for this jacket for a long time and it has not disappointed. In the "Syberacuse" region of Upstate NY and this has been great for all outdoors activities when temps are below 25 degrees F (ODR hockey, skiing, fishing the Fingerlakes for Atlantic salmon). The jacket is too warm if it's not cold out. Only down side is it looks like I will be on the hook to buy one for my wife.
This coat is not very puffy compared to other down parkas I have owned. Hopefully the wind stopper shell will keep it warmer than it looks. Since spring weather is here now in Montana I won’t be able to see how warm it is till next winter. Also I think Stio should use a higher fill power down than 650 fill for a winter coat. I don’t know if I would recommend this coat until I use it in real winter cold temperatures and see how it performs.
Overall, this is a great winter jacket that can be used for winter sports or just hanging out in cold weather, especially when it's windy. It has a nice windproof shell that helps to hold in body heat and keep the chill factor out, and the shell also has some water repellency. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because they could have used 800 fill down (instead of 600), and made it even that much warmer.
Great looking jacket that’s lacking functionality. It’s pretty warm but not what I would expect from a jacket this bulky. I consistently get cold skiing with my young son on days under 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The main zipper and pit zips almost feel breezy when closed, and the collar needs more micro-fleece for your chin to really step this jacket up. It would also benefit from a pass pocket and some dummy pockets.
The Stio, men's Colter Windstopper is the most warm jacket I have ever worn. It is very comfortable and functional. I layered the jacket with a hoodie underneath. It allowed me great maneuverability while skiing in Park City Utah. It is also wind resistant. It fits true to size and pockets are good. I would highly recommend!
I really wanted to love this jacket but there are a couple points they could definitely improve upon. 1. When you wear the jacket, it sounds like you a rustling a bunch of plastic bags. I've noticed it on my jacket and on others that I have seen (heard) on other people I know. Not sure what the issue is but it is mildly annoying. 2. The sizing is pretty spot on, but if you plan to do any moving around in the jacket, you may want to go up a size. They really should have built some stretch in to this jacket like some other manufacturers have as it is very limiting. 3. The main zipper is just bad. Not sure if it's a quality control issue with YKK (these zippers are not what they used to be) or the jacket itself but more often then not, the zipper comes apart and the jacket does not stay closed. I am pretty careful about lining up the double zippers properly, etc and it still happens enough for me to not want to rely on this jacket in really cold or bad weather.
