I work as a hiking guide in Banff national park and was trying to find a durable approach shoe for my job After spending several days looking for shoes came up with the konseal After the first time I used them they felt comfortable and grippy but at the second time the rubber on the toes start wearing out which is very disappointing (just 2 weeks after they arrived!!) Will patch them and use them because they told me that this was normal wear and tear and the options they gave me were 20% off Obviously won’t recommend this to my clients or friends and will stick to lasportiva or scarpa
Spent a week hiking around rocky and gavel trails. Shoes were comfortable and very grippy over wet rock/mud/gravel. Loved wearing them and would recommend them to anyone.
Nice shoe but needs work on the rand. On my first outing, hiking with some scrambling, the toe rand had almost worn through. I took these shoes on a 4 day hike/scramble. The toe rand wore through on the second day and the side rubber started pulling away from the nubuck. Not sure if the rubber will still continue pulling away but I have only used these shoes for a day trip and 4 day outing. Reading the description of these shoes they are designed for scrambling/hiking/rugged backpacking/scree. Well the rand lasted 2 days. I may use a sharpie pen to darken out where the toe rubber has worn through. A more reinforced toe like the vertex alpine would be a better choice. I have never had an issue using the Vertex alpine outings for a year. Now lets work on the positive. These shoes broke in quickly and were comfy for my 75 km 6000m relief trip on central Vancouver Island with a pack and a small amount of climbing gear. A rethink of the rand around this shoe will give it a solid 5 stars. I gave this a 4 star because they are a great shoe outside of the rubber rand issue
I've been wearing Arc'teryx shoes exclusively since the Arcrux SL Approach about 10 years ago, but this Konseal Approach is a real disappointment. The basic construction, including the mismatched lacing area, is truly disappointing. While the shoes are perfectly functional, the design and construction are disappointing. I hope they pay more attention to product inspection. This is the moment my obsessive interest in Arc'teryx shoes has crumbled.
I took these shoes to the Cascades to do some alpine rock climbing on them. I used them for the 2-3 hour hike in and o the rock. The hiked and climbed well. My one issue is the toe rubber is super lacking. After 2 days of use it already worn down to the suede. Compared to other shoes in it's price range and capability it should also have durable toe rubber as others have lasted longer in similar terrain.
Major disappointment; compared to the old version. This used to be a serious hiking shoe; waterproof being among the features. Now water penetrates along the tongue as the tongue gusset is made of perforated material; you can’t walk through any depth of water; even rain gets through.
Good shoe but Rand around toe wore through after minimal use. Last pair of another leading brand lasted 6 years of use and abuse and Rand is still perfectly intact.
A fairly light and fairly comfortable shoe. The upper seems well-built, and the sole is good for hiking, but could really be refined for climbing by being a touch narrower and having a larger climbing zone in the sole pattern. These tend to be pretty hot compared with other shoes with more mesh in the uppers, but that will likely be made up for by the longevity. With stickier rubber and a bit narrower toe box and a bit lighter weight, this shoe could be stellar. Right now, it's a solid hiking-oriented approach shoe
A downgrade from the previous version in my opinion. The upper is less breathable, which makes these less comfortable in summer months. I miss the older toe kick which had better coverage than this version. The sole is still very high quality. The heel required more break in than the older version. I had blisters from my initial day wearing them, though comfort has since improved.
Right out of the box, the leather on the upper was already creased. So imagine after a couple wears. The shoe itself wasn’t as comfortable as I wanted it to be as well, but that’s not so much of an issue since that’s not their focus. Performance wise, they serve their purpose, grippy, protective and will be great for rocky terrain. Beautiful shoe but I couldn’t ignore the flaws.
