Good ice climbing glove
he Venta has proven to be a viable ice climbing glove for me in the mid-temperature range. It has sufficient dexterity/flexibility for handling screws, draws, and cams, and enough warmth for using in temperatures into the teens (with a hand warmer, but I use hand warmers no matter the glove). On 2 successive days ice/alpine mixed climbing, they were my tool of choice. While I hadn't used them before, I had no issues with their performance. They're thin enough that you don't over-grip tools, and the dexterity is excellent. I never had any issues fumbling with gear on my harness, clipping, etc. I found the leather to be pretty slick, so I baked in a bit of snow-seal to help with tackiness. I definitely recommend this to anyone using these for ice/mixed climbing. I think the stock-leather could be better for this application. The gauntlet is a bit of a mid-range length. Given that Arc's softshell jackets keep getting shorter (both in length and arm length), I'd actually prefer a longer gauntlet so it would stay OVER the sleeve instead of under the sleeve of the softshell, which invariably pulls out and leaves you with chilly wrists! Overall, this glove will stay in my quiver for ice and mixed climbing this season. The dexterity is enough that I'd have no qualms about wearing them on WI6 leads if the temperature range matched the warmth needed.
New version is worse
I am a lover of the previous glove version - the Venta AR. It was an amazing ski touring or winter hiking glove. It kept you warm even when wet, had amazing dexterity, light, and durable. I bought this pair to have as a backup to replace my well used Venta AR gloves. This new glove is less dexterous (more boxy cut on the fingers), the leather quality is worse, and the cuff has an unneeded velcro cuff. Disappointing decline in what used to be the best touring glove on the market.
Useless without a liner, only decent with one
When you buy this brand with it’s associated cost you expect something better. As far as keeping my hands warm they are no better than the significantly less expensive pair I was trying to upgrade from.
Still Making the Best
Being August, I haven't had a chance to wear them in the field. I have worn them into a walk-in freezer and rearranged the shelves. I know the quality and the finish are there, they are going to be a great glove for cold weather hiking and any outdoor activity. The leather on the palms is top notch, you can fast rope with it or comfortably adjust your kit in freezing conditions. I cant wait for winter!
Great fit and function.
I have a long and narrow hand, and the XL fits well without being too wide. I also judge glove dexterity by whether I can extend my thumb all the way back without the glove material stopping it. The Venta GTX passes the test, and with a fleece interior and waterproof liner the gloves are great for high output hiking in the dreary 3-45 degree range, and are good for slow movement in a bit warmer temps.
The Best Waterproof Gloves
Hands down the best pair of waterproof gloves I've ever tried on. Besides looking elite, they are much more dextrous than I would have ever expected and are breathable enough to be worn at 90 F without major discomfort (not that you should). 10/10 will buy another pair in the future.
Great glove
I bought the XL as I am with other gloves. Tight to get the on initially but once on the fit and feel is top notch 👌 think they will be a great glove in winter. Just hope I will still be able to get them on when its -5°C
