I absolutely love my Gamma MX pants—they're perfect for ice climbing! These pants are durable, insulated, and incredibly stretchy, meeting all your needs for cold-weather adventures. They've kept me warm on hikes and ice climbs, even in bone-chilling -10°F temperatures. When it comes to versatility, these pants truly have it all.
I own four different colors in the previous version of the Gamma MX pant. Living in the mountains and recreating and volunteering in the backcountry regularly, this was the perfect winter pant. It is warm, breathable, agile, and comfortable. Importantly, the cuff could fit easily and comfortably over the top of my ski touring boots. It was perfect for everything from wearing around town to ski touring. It could even be layered under a shell on storm days. Unfortunately, the recently updated version of this pant has significantly reduced the circumference of the cuff, making it impossible to fit over touring boots. The previous design was basically my quiver-of-one winter pant, but alas, that is no more.
Hi there. Thanks for your feedback on the Gamma MX Pant. We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the cuff adjustments. While the new design aims to provide a streamlined fit, we recognize the importance of compatibility with ski touring boots. We'll be sure to share your insights with our design team.
Great pair of pants. This is my second pair , too bad they don’t make it anymore. They kept me dry and warm while ice climbing in the Canadian Rockies and while mountaineering at high altitude (with a base layer underneath) . Very flexible and resistant to abrasion.
Great product, I have two pair - Would have given a 5 star review except for the notation below. Blocks wind, waterproof, lined and unless single digits I don't need long johns. The best for walking the dog. Needs 2 improvements/modifications. First back pockets, my primary carry position for a wallet and cell phone (left/right). Second, belt loops for a 1.5" belt - this would allow the pant to carry more weight comfortably. Do away with the cargo pockets, don't use them and never will - worthless.
The pants great. They provide a nice comfortable inner lining that provides nice protection against the elements. I have used them for up to -20 so far. They have good mobility and fit well overall. I did have to purchase a 36 waist although I am 34 for the legs to fit properly, they fit well in the 36. I also use them on the ice while coaching my son’s Tim Bits team. The ice surface is not heated and often hits -40 in the winter. I look forward to testing them out.
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) The Revised Gamma MX Pants have the classic Arc'Teryx exceptional quality and attention to detail you expect. The outer face material is extremely durable, and the interior material is warm. The four zippered pockets are excellent for organizing (and not losing) your necessary, readily accessible gear. I purchased these for a trek in the Peruvian Andes up through Salkantay pass. I'm 5'11, 160 Lbs with a 42" chest and 32" waist. The fit is athletic and the gusseted crotch and stretch material makes them very comfortable to wear. I bought the 32" waist Regular inseam and the 34" waist Regular inseam just in case. I normally wear a 32" waist pant and these are perfect. The 34" waist pants were too big. I bought my pair as soon as I got a notice they were in stock. Glad I did! Buy these. I promise you will not be disappointed!
After one year of usage - bought in 2023 - these are by far the most comfortable Gamma Pants for my winter hikes. I also have a pair of Gamma AR Pants, but I prefer the MX version for the internal soft fleece which helps during windy and cold winter days. It is a pure pleasure to perceive the fleece directly on your skin. I mostly used them for hikes in the snow, but they work great to stay warm and comfortable at home in my living room.
I've been a full-time year-round, professional climbing guide in northern New Hampshire for 49 years I have been a year-round, full time professional climbing guide. Soft shell is my go to fabric. The gamma MX Pat is my go to pat because it's fit and features are superior. To anything else I've used. Simple things like the belt, and the fact that there were no rear pockets is something that stands above the rest. Great fabric great fit
This particular pant has the soft feeling inner layer. Don't always need long johns with these. I am 6'3" tall and 205 lbs. I usually wear a size 34 in most brands. These are on the tighter side for sure, but the 36 are too big. Keep in mind if I wear size Rag and Bone and Levis, they are loose on me. I am a 35 in Lululemon if that helps. Wish Arcteryx made 35's.
I bought this pant specifically for ice climbing and compared it to several other softshell pants. The positives for the Gamma MX are the minimal cuff, highest loft of the brushed interior and the double thigh pockets. Ultimately I sent them back as the cuff is too skinny to fit over the gaiter on a modern ice boot (LaSportiva G-Summit)
