Convenient, fast, and conserves wax.
The MountainFLOW Eco Waxer is a pretty impressive tool, and is very convenient if you drive an electric car or have a 120v outlet in your rig! It heats quite well as long as the ambient temperature outside is above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Below that you have to hold it pretty close to the board and move slow. However with some practice, and technique, a layer of wax can be spread in very little time. I took this up to the resort several times this winter, and was able to change wax based on the actual temperature when I arrived. At home, inside the house, the temperature transfers to the board/ski’s a lot quicker and made for even shorter job times. You just grind on the wax of choice, hold the waxer close to the board/ski, and move slow. I used a couple paper towels to wipe the wax even right behind the waxer as I went along. It made for a very fast ride each time, and used substantially, almost insanely, less wax than the traditional melt and scrape method. Like seriously, your wax is going to last a lot lot longer this way. Not to mention the entire clean up after was just throwing away the two paper towels. Comes with a great heavy duty carrying case. Although the case did off-gas some pretty intense smells for a few days after arrival. Seems to be built to a high standard, and heavy duty. This will be used every time I wax instead of the iron I own.
wonder product for fast and easy waxing!
I have sort of wanted to start waxing my skis at home, but wasn't excited about the hassle. I was super excited to test this for REI since it seems like the perfect solution. The iron is pretty straightforward to use- plug in and hold over the surface you want to heat- the infrared can start heating immediately and liquefies quickly, so it only takes a few minutes to completely wax each ski. I watched the instruction video, which looked like it used thicker layer of wax than you actually need. As a result I used too much wax on the first ski and I ended up having to scrape off extra wax. It also takes much longer for the iron to melt when you have too much wax. You need a VERY small amount for the iron to work- I include pictures of a correct amount of wax ski and the too waxy ski. If I were using this for the first time again, I would test small areas to calibrate optimal wax amounts. If it seems like the melting is taking longer than the instructions suggested, it is because you used too much wax. By the time I got to my second ski I was a lot more prepared. As promised, with the right amount of wax, it is insanely quick. No scraping needed, just a little brushing. The best part is that my skis felt freshly waxed when I took them out! I was ready to be a lifetime user after my first experience with the mountainFLOW eco-wax IR Waxer because of the convenience, time-savings, lack of clean-up, and the tiny amount of wax required for each application. I can now wax my skis at home in less time then it would take to put them in the car and drive to the ski shop and avoid that whole hassle. Strongly recommend! Even if you are not a DIYer, this process is so easy that there's no reason not to become a home waxer.
Better than an iron. Little different technique.
Let me start by saying, I'm not an expert ski repair, wax, or tune person. I'm just an average joe that likes to do things himself. As far as waxing ski's go, this is significantly easier than using a hot iron. I wouldnt say I notice a difference in the performance of ski's or the amount of time the ski's stay slick on the mountain. The fact you dont have to scrape is amazing. The wax is more even across the ski's. Took a little getting used to in comparison to an iron. You will use significantly less wax. Which is nice if you like to use expensive waxes.
Makes waxing much easier.
I purchased one of these and used it on the last trip. Wow, what a reduction in effort! I really liked the tip about pre-warming the skis before applying the wax. That really helped get more wax on the ski. I wasn't getting enough wax at first, probably because the wax and ski were too cold. FYI I'm using PURL purple wax and it works really well. I will take this on ski trips where we rent a home. Now I don't have to worry about getting wax drips or wax shavings everywhere. On note of caution: Like a regular iron, you CAN overheat and damage your skis. Keep it moving!
Total Game Changer!
I've been waxing skis forever and this device is a game changer. It makes the whole process so much faster and easier. AND, I don't need to scrape anymore. I just use a brass brush and I get great results. Cheers mountainFLOW!
