The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Kids' Bike
What size bike does my child need?
- Measure your child’s height and inseam (the length from their crotch to the floor). Age can provide a rough guide, but since kids grow at different rates, a size/inseam measurement will be more accurate. Compare that measurement to a bike sizing guide to help you find the right wheel size.
- Buy a bike that fits well now rather than one that is too large that they can "grow into." A properly sized bike will be easier for kids to handle, a lot safer and more fun to ride.
Four bike types
- Balance bikes are best for teaching balance and steering to the youngest riders.
- Training wheel bikes are great for kids who want to build confidence while learning to ride.
- Cruiser bikes have smooth, wide tires and are ideal for riding on paved surfaces.
- Mountain bikes: Riding on trails and rough off-road terrain.
Features
- Weight and frame material: Lighter bikes are easier for kids to handle. To save weight, look for bikes with aluminum frames.
- Wider tires offer more stability, traction and cushion.
- Brakes: Coaster brakes tend to be easier for younger kids to use and require less maintenance. Handbrakes typically appear on larger kids' pedal bikes and require more hand strength to use.
