Overly thorough review
Made of EVA foam (like Crocs, but firmer/high durometer), these are very lightweight compared to other waterproof rain/cold/work boots like XTRATUFs. My size 12s weigh 31.1oz (less than 2 lbs) for one boot. The fit is perfect for my wide feet (EEEE-ish), fitting closely but not having any pressure points for my large bunions. It's true to my usual shoe size (which is 1 full size up from Brannock device size due to the width of my feet). Getting in and out of the boots is easy with one layer of socks. There is a shelf on the heel to help you kick them off despite the close fit. Wearing two layers of ragg wool socks, it's still comfortable in use, but getting my feet out requires a lot of force. It's warm with just one pair of normal thin socks though, have already use it in sub-zero F temperatures, and it's still warm. Out of the box, I could feel the boot crease into the front of my ankle because the EVA was stiff. A NYT Wirecutter review noted that "the outer shell of the boot dug into our ankles". However, it didn't do so with terrible pressure, and didn't cause any bruising. By my second 1-mile walk, I could feel the pressure easing. Hot tip: I went ahead and folded the boot over along each those horizontal lines in the front (and back) of the boot, especially in the forward ankle area, creasing them (like making a paper airplane) with my fingers. 10-minutes later, no more digging into the ankle. Fixed. The sole also feels like it has little flex out of the box but it softens up with wear. You can accelerate that flex improvement too by squatting down onto your toes with heel up. After softening it up/breaking it in, it's nice to walk in. The platform feels stable and without too much heel to toe drop. I've been using it for winter dog walking every night and winter outdoor chores like shoveling snow. The outsole feels very grippy including on packed snow but is kind of slippery on hard ice (but no more than other standard outsole materials). I can't say anything about durability other than I see zero wear after 18.4 miles. (I requested that Strava add Fubuki to their shoe brand list, and they obliged.) It's not in the description, but this is a safety-toed boot with hard composite material under the outer shell in the toe, so you can use it for tasks/work that require safety toes (not sure if it has an official ANSI or other certification though). Not that it matters for most readers, but just from looking closely at pictures, one difference that I see between this 3.0 and the previous 2.0 (beside US availability), is that the 3.0 has a wider toebox and is less pointy in the toe. A handful reviews (out of many) of the 2.0 mentioned the issues with the hard toe/EVA separating or some issue like that, so hopefully they took care of that in the 3.0, but I'm just speculating. I see no issue with my 3.0 in the toe area. Fubuki came onto my radar after a rosy review from Outside last year (of the 2.0) with the main appeals being the lightweight aspect and color choices (though I ended up choosing black instead of the orange. . . would have chosen maybe the beige/sand if REI offered it). I'm glad I took a chance ordering it from REI, there not being any in my local store to try out.
Warm and Comfortable!
So warm and comfortable! I brought these on a trip to Lapland this winter and they were the perfect item to keep my feet warm and dry
