While guiding for Montana Alpine Guides, I have exclusively used the Zodiac Tech on Gannett Peak (WY's highest mountain) and similar mountain climbs. Gannett Peak involves 35-50 miles on dry trail and rocky terrain followed by a glacier/snow climb on summit day requiring crampons. In the past I always brought a pair of running shoes for the dry hiking and then used a less-comfortable mountain boot for summit day. The Zodiac tech bridges the gap between comfort and performance, allowing me (and other MAG guides) to bring only this boot on these trips. On technical terrain they also excel with crampons and at climbing rock. We highly recommend this boot to anyone who climbs mountains with us in the summer.
Tried on several three season mountaineering boots, and got severe blisters after about 90min with all others. Used these to summit Mt. Rainier in June and was extremely happy. Yes, my feet were cold. No, I didn’t feel it became a big issue. It was 10ish degrees and a relatively calm day at elevation. I do tape my feet prior to long movements in boots. If you have blister issues due to heavy sweating like I do, these are great. If that’s not an issue, a four season boot is likely a better move for hardcore mountaineering. I feel like these are best suited for those with long shoulder seasons, who would like something to tackle Olympic range sized summits with intermittent long crampon days. They don’t feel LaSportiva narrow, and I was much more comfortable than in the Charmoz model Scarpa.
Great lightweight hiking boots! Very stable on boulders/rock slides. Bought the same size as my La Sportiva Mountaineering boots.
