Too-notch construction and design but still ill-fitting.
These are brilliant training shorts and just as great as all of their other shorts. Tough, strong and sturdy yet pliant, soft and supportive. Ten Thousand is truly the best brand in training apparel. BUT. But they can’t meet consumer demand. Period. They keep working on new designs and new purposeful garments, finished to the highest quality but they can’t simply meet demands of guys who want their size XS or XL garments in colors beyond black. “If you are size XS, you can have any color you want as long as it’s black.” I have the foundation shorts, the interval shorts, the session shorts and now I’ve just purchased and received the tactical shorts. Because I couldn’t order an XS, I bought the S based on myriad reviews that it was the perfect short and a bit smaller than all the other shorts. They may be a bit smaller but they are still a bit too big and baggy for me. If in XS I’m sure they would be perfect. So because I’m smaller than an S the legs of the liner tends to be a little bit large and too loose, thereby riding up my legs and bunching up at the hip joint and crotch. It’s not uncomfortable but I find that I’m reaching in often having to coax the liner back down my thighs. The features are awesome, and the cut is fantastic but I just wish they had them in a size XS. I wish they had all of the other shorts in a size XS and I would buy so many of more of their products in all different colors. This is the only severe disappointment of Ten Thousand products, for me. I have addressed this with them and of course they tell me that they’re trying to meet demand. But it’s taking years and years and since production began of their shorts they have only produced one other shorts in size XS in gray now. I have those too. Everything is black except for this one interval shorts offered in XS in gray. Shirts too. Only two available in XS. Guess which colors they come in? 4-stars because of limited size and product availability. 5-stars for the ones I have that fit.
Underwhelmed.
Cons: I've had the shorts less than a month. I've worn them 3 times washed them twice. The fabric is already pilling and I've got several places where fabric threads have started to pull - luckily the ripstop is working preventing runs. The shorts look like I've lived in them for a year, even though I have yet to truly put them through their paces. Pros: Wore them for a full day backpacking - They are super comfortable. No chaffing. Dry quickly. I like the zipper pockets more than I anticipated. Conclusion: I was sold by the claim of maximum comfort, mobility, and durability. I my opinion the shorts hit the comfort and mobility, but miss on durability. I thought the higher price tag was really paying for durability, but this does not seem to be the case.
2nd pair even better than the 1st
I wanted to try the tactical in 5" and for some reason the waistband seems to fit better than it did with the 7". The waistband was the only drawback I'd noticed of this short, which is that for slimmer folks like myself the waistband would sit AWAY from the body creating an odd bulge rather than hugging the body like the Set shorts do. Since they've arrived I've worn the 5" Tactical thru a few runs, strength workouts, casual events, and one particularly memorable set of 100 Turkish getups with a 55-lb sandbag. The shorts and I survived just fine though my sweat got everywhere! I now own 2 pairs of the Tactical short and 2 of the Set and am hoping for an orange/yellow color way of either to be released (or for the Solar to return for the Set). Thanks, Ten Thousand team!
Great fit, weak stitching
Great fit and style. Loved the color I got. I bought these shorts on the recommendation of a family member that has multiple clothing items from ten thousand. He mentioned he loved the shorts but had a stitch rip on the outside of the leg. He was able to get them exchanged, which was good. So I bought a pair and ended up having stitches pop on both sides of the pair I had. I hadn't even put them through any rigorous activity. The refund process was easy, but I'll use the credit to get a different pair. If your aren't careful pulling them up and down while taking them on and off, you may end up with the same issue.
Tactical short misfire
First off, love my Foundation shorts. Absolutely the best, hard wearing, functional short for my workouts. Was looking for another type that could compliment those workouts but fill a more amphibious role. Looked at the Set short but the open pockets create too much drag for real swimming. Then the Tactical short. Looks great. Fits great. Feels great. But the seams and the stitching, not so great. First pair, right out of the bag had broken stitching at the seams on the side. Returned them for another pair. That process was super smooth. Next pair on close inspection were fine. Then after just one workout, mostly just running and body weight exercises, found the seams in the same area with broken stitching again. Not sure where you go from here but for me it’s right back to the Foundation shorts. I’m no SEAL, although one of TT’s brand ambassadors is a friend of mine, but the Tactical short was a disappointment for this Devil Dog.
Stitching came undone right when I had received
When these shorts arrived I was excited to try them out, and they were very comfortable. After wearing them for about an hour, the stitching for the drawstring lining came undone! I reached out and unfortunately, since I tried them on they told me I could not return them. They seem well made but fell apart very quickly.
Stiff, tight, uncomfortable
I don't get it. I can't figure out for who/what type of an 'athlete' these shorts were designed. They were the most uncomfortable pair of shorts I've ever worn. The pocket openings are about 1/3 of the size they should be. I could hardly get more than a couple of fingers into them. The waist has a 2" wide stiff band that I can't understand why anyone would want. It felt like a canvas weight belt without any function. And the drawstring to tighten the waist was also made of this really stiff, and uncomfortable material. And what's up with the sizing? I've been wanting to order a pair of shorts from Ten Thousand for months, but under their sizing I'm an XXL, and for some reason Ten Thousand offers very limited selection in XXL. At the end of the day you can push the 'core athlete' narrative all you like, but when your products and their design don't live up to it, all you are is a lot of hot air with pretty pictures. That pretty much sums up my experience with Ten Thousand. There's a reason other brands charge more, and design their products for real athletes, and not just for those who wish to play the part. I'll stick with them, and leave brands like this to the Instagram crowd.
Solid all round short
Light enough to ruck/run in and flexible enough to be unobtrusive during training and yoga. Don't know about durability over the long haul but they seem to be holding up over 2 weeks of use so far (other than some minor stitching coming loose in non-contact areas like the front hem of all places... watching those apprehensively). This is pretty much everything you wanted in the interval short. Unlike the interval short they don't have extraneous open pockets to get caught on stuff like dumbells and the short liner actually gives some nice compression and thigh rub protection (I'm fluffy but don't skip leg day and still found myself swimming in the compression liner for the interval short). The pockets especially the liner thigh sleeve will actually hold your phone in them rather than letting it slide out as you move around. The aggressively textured waistband is a chafing hazard (modelled after MOLLE webbing I assume?) if you're at the muffin toppy stage of your fitness journey like me so that's a minus v.s. the interval. The jury is still out as far as durability goes. I love how lightweight they feel. My dream short would be the features of this short migrated onto the more robust materials of the interval short but we'll see.
Complete Gear
Not everything you get that’s supposed to be good is actually good. But everything I’ve ever gotten from Ten Thousand is a piece of top kit for sure. I use and abuse everything I have and these shorts have held up excessively well. I ride bikes in them (20-30miles/day), run in them (2-3 moles a couple times a week), complete all of my weight training (mostly KBs and MetCon), and still wear them to work. The zipper pockets keep things in place and the small interior pockets give a nice spot to put keys and headphones cases so they don’t swing around. The material is durable and I haven’t had anything tear or rip on me. Seams are strong and liner is good. No stretching or restriction. This is what I would call complete gear. Highly recommend.
Sick shorts with minor flaws
I love the material on these and the look. Dig the pockets and cell phone holder. Little weird rolling up your shorts to get your phone out but it’s a great spot rather than the pocket. You can be pretty active with the phone in the holder. The reason for the 4 stars- I own the interval shorts and the foundation shorts and those have been awesome. With the tactical shorts the liner is a lot thinner and tends to bunch up a bit compared to the other shorts. The elastic waist band is different. It also has a tendency to want to ride up. Other than that these shorts are :fire: I’m 5’11, 175 lean and got the mediums.
