I work outside so I go through many a boots and shoes. Things I specifically look for are aggressive tread, arch/ ankle support and waterproofness/ insulation depending on season. Love the tread on these. Didn't slip walking over tree roots, rocks, gravel or mud. Quite a bit got stuck in the tread, even. Great arch support, after 2 weeks of wearing them most work days, I will NOT have to buy inserts. I was initially suprised by the abundant ankle padding, and I thought I may not like it but since these seem to be more cool weather shoes I'll generally be wearing them with pants so they wont appear as big from the top. Temperature wise, once its much above 70°F, these become too warm for my comfort. Waterproof confirmed! Standing water, heavy morning dew, downpours, came home with dry feet. The only thing that would make these more comfortable for my feet would be a wider toe box. It's quite narrow and I noticed that immediately.
The Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots are light-weight, sturdy, and provided great ankle support. When moving over rocky terrain and uneven slopes, the boots kept my ankle stable and prevented excessive rolling. This is not a substitute for a high rise hiker but is a good performer for the mid-rise category. One of the best features is the tread. It held to the rocks and trail tightly (even on slopes) while my trail hiking cohorts were slipping. While I didn’t do any hiking in the rain, I had plenty of creek crossings where the boot was about half submerged and found my feet stayed completely dry. They also gripped the wet rocks quite well. The boots laced easily but didn’t always stay tight while hiking (not a deal breaker for me). The only downside that prevented a 5-star review was the width. I ordered a 7.5 Wide but found the width seemed much more like normal than wide. The first hike I wore regular dress socks as my hiking socks made the boots feel very tight. After that hike, I placed shoe stretchers in the boots for a few days. The next time I wore the boots I was able to wear thin hiking socks. A few more days with the shoe stretchers I found the boots to feel much more comfortable. Overall, this is a good boot that I will keep and use as my regular hiking boots.
The Salomon Women's X Ultra 5 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking boots are pure heaven !!! I have hiked and biked in them in Florida and New Jersey in the pouring rain. I am an animal guardian who uses her hybrid bike to get to homes to walk dogs, but I'm also an avid hiker. I live in Boca Raton, Florida, but I am a NYC/NJ transplant so I love to return home to my old trails. The first time I put these hiking boots on, I could not believe how comfortable and light they were. I felt as if I had my trainers on. I generally wear an 8.5 of 9 shoe, and the size 9 was perfect. I have a normal width, and my toes had plenty of wiggle room. With my thick hiking socks, they fit smoothly, but there was not enough space to cause blisters on long hikes with uneven terrain. We have a 6 month rainy season in Boca, and my trails have mud and slick rocks. The GORE-TEX membrane kept my feet dry for almost 6 hours in the rain and mud! My feet could breathe! The all terrain contagrip outsole was da bomb!!! If I am nervous that I may slip and fall, I usually hike slower, and I was amazed at my pace in the rain because of the reliable traction. The lateral support was phenomenal too! I just turned sixty, and I felt so protected and confident in these boots that I was moving as fast as I did at 40. I went home to Spring Lake, NJ for a wedding on a rainy weekend, and once again, these boots delivered some awesome, comfortable hikes. The most thrilling aspect of these boots is that I can work in them! Walking my larger dogs in the rain seemed so much easier in these boots. I have a different schedule every week depending on the pets I am sitting for, but I was cranking out 9 hours days and these boots were so comfortable biking to the different homes. These hiking boots are fabulous!!! The Salomon Women's X Ultra 5 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking boots exceeded all my expectations, and I have been hiking for 40 years!
I wore the Salomon Women's X Ultra 5 Mid Gore-Tex Hiking Boots to my Senior Rangers meeting in a state park on 4/17/2025. I noticed as soon as I took the boots out of the box that they felt surprisingly light for their apparent stability and a seriously grippy-appearing sole. I thought about how easy they would be to pack for a trip as a result of that light weight. Once I put them on, I felt they fit my feet (which are large for my height, size 9 1/2 for a 5'2" woman) well, with plenty of room in the toebox. This is important to me because my toes are long! On that first wearing, I was participating in an archery lesson (see photos), and I felt very confident in the boots. Yesterday, 4/24/2025, I wore the boots again, this time for two hikes on natural trails, for a total of about 4 miles. The boots were comfortable throughout, and in particular I noticed that the rubber tips on the toes of the boots was nice to have on these types of trails: I tend to occasionally hit my toe on a root, and that tip protected both my foot and the boot's material. The only characteristic of this boot I am not so fond of is the color scheme -- I prefer something a little more lively. But that is a minor issue when you get light weight, foot comfort, and toe protection all in the same boot!
These boots were comfy right out of the box. A little wider than hiking shoes I've worn though. I wore them with a medium weight wool sock and that was perfect. I usually wear and 8.5 in a sport shoe which is the size I tried and found themTTS. These have a nice grippy sole. I wore them without an insole insert and still found them to be very comfortable. My only criticism is the laces do not stay tied without double knotting.
These boots are great, I am impressed! I hiked in them in both dry and wet conditions and they performed very well in both. The most impressive thing for me was the comfort right out of the box and how light they are. The traction is also very good, I didn’t slip even once. And the ankle support is great, which is important for me as I have a tendency to roll my ankles. Really very happy with these boots!
Oh, how I love the Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots! I’ve worn them on a handful of hikes; enough to share that they check so many boxes. To start with, they are so comfortable. They did not have a breaking-in period, which many hiking boots have. My feet are on the wide side, and I often have challenges that I can fit in with ease. I found the toe box to be roomy enough for my wide feet. The ankle support is sturdy. On several of my hikes, (in the mountains of New York’s Hudson Valley), I walked through streams and other waterways. The GORE-TEX surely does its job! The traction on the sole is stellar. Scrambling up rocks is fun, and I find my footing on the rocks to be secure. I recommend these hiking boots for the winter and the cooler parts of the fall and spring. For me, they are too warm to be worn during the warmer times of the year. I am so happy with these boots and have no reservation in giving them a strong recommendation!
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The only positive of March storms in May? Being able to wear my new boots again! I know that sounds extreme but I'm just so impressed with these boots that I really do enjoy wearing them so much. In the past, I have always been quite conservative with spending and wondering if there really was much difference between $75 hiking boots and $150+. What could really be that much better? Well, sadly for my future wallet, there really is a difference! These boots were perfectly comfortable right out of the box, needed no breaking in, and after wearing for an hour long light hike my first time out in them, left no blisters and didn't rub anywhere. When I wore them out recently in the rain, they performed excellently. I was able to walk in a downpour, through puddles and mud, with my feet staying perfectly dry and comfortable. The traction was excellent regardless of the surface. And I think they look pretty good, too! Overall, 10/10 and I'm looking forward to next hiking season where I'll be wearing these every chance I get.
These shoes are surprisingly light weight given how sturdy they are. They’ve got rugged soles and good padding around the ankles. My feet feel very supported but nothing feels tight or stiff. They had good traction on my hike on a hilly trail, and they breathed well given that they’re waterproof. In fact I didn’t really think about my boots much at all since they were so comfortable! I’d recommend these as good day hiking boots in any terrain.
The toe box creases and cracks in a short period of time. I have had 3 pairs of xultra 4 shoes and they all failed in that same spot. Giant holes in them after less than a year
