I have no complaints about the shoes. They are lightweight and cushiony, although a little snug. The deliveries from REI, however, are awful. The last three purchases were dumped at the top of my driveway rather than on the front porch, where FedEx, UPS, Amazon and USPS always put their packages. I even put a large-print note in my driveway asking the REI delivery person to drop the package on the porch. It didn't matter. They just dropped the package right next to my note. C'mon REI, stop relying on irresponsible, budget delivery services. I expect better
I knew this was an updated "LT" version of the Katabatic but never expected the toe box to be so dramatically changed. It went from nice and room to very narrow. I won't buy them again.
My feet run a smidgen wide, and when I first put them on I thought, pretty good. Well, 30 seconds later I felt like I was wearing my favorite tennis shoes. Honestly, I bought these mainly to garden, because I needed the traction, the flexibility, the low weight, the Gore-Tex, and the firm sole to push on the shovel. After 2 hours of serious landscaping, I can honestly say these are great shoes and would be great hiking shoes. In the future I might get another pair and add them to my arsenal of hiking shoes. They are true to fit, and the tongue is anchored so it does not slip. The traction on wet slippery slopes is excellent and the laces stay put. These are my second pair of Oboz, and I'm loving them.
Excellent 'round town' shoe, and indeed I originally bought a pair for a trip to Japan. It stays quite cool for a shoe of this sort, and so I decided to take it on some hikes in the Pacific Northwest. I run a light pack, say 15-16 lb. I am finding that thiis shoe does not have enough cushion in the heel for longer days (above 10 mi), though i understand this is a personal thing. My hiking buddy wears 'thin' shoes, and is happy about it. Main complaint is about their usefulness for trail hiking: They don't seem to have much longevity. After barely 140 mi (half urban, half on trail) there is some sole separation around the heel, and the shoe already feels a bit 'spent'. Not impressed, given the cost of these.
I purchased this shoe for travel where I am concerned about getting wet fee. I only take one pair of shoes. I have worn Oboz in the past and found them comfortable on my size 11 feet. I wore this shoe for two weeks of travel in the Pacific Northwest, first for three days of hiking on Mount Rainier and then for a week of hiking on the Oregon Coast. The biggest test was three inches of falling wet snow on Mount Rainier. My feet stayed dry. Mostly, the travels were dry, and I was pleased that my feet never got hot, even with the waterproofing fabric. I am very pleased with the Katabatic model and will buy it again.
I got these and was excited, but as another user noted, the 'regular' shoes were very narrow. I bought them direct from Oboz but I also wanted to review here. Only bought them direct because they didn't have my size at REI. I have never ordered wide shoes in my life, and immediately I felt the pinch behind the pinky toe. They even look narrow before you put them on. These are great for people with skinny feet, and I hesitate buying wide because I think that would great a different problem with the fit. Poor design and a true outlier from a fit perspective. If you have skinny feet, these will be great because the feel was awesome. Toe box made them not wearable, and it was not something breaking in would fix.
It’s been a long time since I’ve had my mind blown by a shoe! These are absolutely amazing! Got them for trail running in wet but warm/hot weather. They turn out to have breathability equal to some of my other warm weather non-waterproof shows. Wow! Very lightweight but extremely well-constructed. No leakage in wet conditions. These transfer energy to your feet and make running really fun! One of the best pairs of trail shoes I’ve ever purchased!
I ordered these online because I’ve had many pairs of Oboz over the years and loved them all. However, I wore these one time and returned them. After a quarter of a mile they HURT with a painful pressure point on top of the ball of my foot. I tried loosen ing the laces and even tried re-lacing and skipping the bottom two eyelets. It didn’t help so back they went.
These shoes put spring into my step! I really like how comfortable they are. I wish more colors were available in Wides. I tried on the regular 12s and they were so narrow I couldn't get my foot into them. These also run a little long. I bought 12W but I wish I had tried on an 11.5W first. That said, they make my feet happy and keep them dry. Really nice trail shoes!
Most comfortable shoe I’ve owned. Good support and cushion. I like the gore tex feature since I will use these for travel. I had to go with a wide. The regular width was too tight for me. I also had to change the shoe laces since the ones that came with the shoes would not stay tied. I got the black and would like to see more color options in grays and earth tones.
