Absolutely awesome shoe for mountain running or fell running. I run in the Lakes District (UK) and whether it's scrambling up technical slopes of Scafell or running down flowy trails of Kentmere these shoes deliver. Their grip doesn't look like much, but boy do they grip! Wet rock and even wet grass, they're great. I'm especially surprised with how well they grip on the wet slate of the lakes. They're super comfortable and the sock prevents any tiny rocks coming in when going down screes. Highly recommend.
I couldn't be happier with how this Vertex Speed has turned out. This was built with running, scrambling, and climbing around the mountains of BC in mind and that's exactly how I'll be using it! It's just as much at home on the trails around the Chief as it is on the summits of the Tantalus Range. Roger's Pass or the Tetons - this is an awesome fast and light shoe. It's thin near the toe for good smearing and climbing, and has a bit of cushion at the heel for descending 1500m back to valley bottom.
These shoes were awesome while they lasted. I really loved the shape of the shoe and the ability to run up and down technical terrain much like an approach shoe. Unfortunately the lifespan of the shoe was super poor. I only used the shoes for running and got about 150km. At about 30km, the base started de-laminating (Not badly but enough to cause problems but enough that I was a bit concerned). The real issue was that the foam on the rear of the foam collapsed on the inside edge of both shoes making it so I cannot run in them at all anymore. I really liked running in the shoe, unfortunately, I am pretty disappointed with the durability, even as an ultralight shoe.
Hi Tanner, thank you for your feedback on the Vertex Speed Shoe. We’re glad to hear you loved the shape and how it performed on technical terrain, much like an approach shoe. That said, we’re truly sorry to hear about the durability issues you experienced, especially the early delamination and foam collapse on the rear interior. That’s not the experience we want for any of our customers, and we understand how disappointing it must be, especially since you enjoyed running in them at first. We’d really appreciate the opportunity to take a closer look. Please consider submitting a Product Service Request form, so our team can assess the issue and explore how we can make things right. Thank you again for your honest feedback. It helps us improve our footwear, and we hope to give you a more positive experience moving forward. https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/help/product-service/service-request\n
It's about time someone made a super lightweight, durable, breathable, comfortable running/climbing shoe with an ankle gaiter. I don't write reviews very often...only when something is really bad or really good. These shoes are the latter. I am sooo pleased. It has been many years since a shoe was made that even comes close to this for backcountry adventuring, so it's great to finally have one. I'm 58, had a lifetime of adventuring, and have been struggling with finding descent shoes for awhile. Not anymore. Folks...keep the positive reviews coming on these, so we can keep them around. Thank you Arcteryx!
Shoe is super snug fit with the sock style, firm and rigid at first so advise is to break the shoe in gradually to give it chance to mould to your feet. Balances comfort and stability and has great traction with decent lugs for tricky terrain
I bought these shoes specifically to hike Mount Whitney after having bad luck with the Hoka speed goats. These were a great shoe for me on the hike I didn't have any blisters or rubbing issues but they could use some improvement in a couple of areas that would make them absolutely fantastic. First off they definitely need to be broken in I wore these about three or four times for close to 20 mi to break them in. Initially they were very uncomfortable and caused some rubbing issues but after the first time it got way better. Second piece while the traction is good it's definitely not as good as the Contra grip on the Solomons. I did have some minor slippage that I think could be improved. The third piece I would say it could use just a little bit more cushioning in some spots. Nothing that would add significant weight but along the seams behind your Achilles ends along the inner toe
I've use these shoes for a few days now in the alpine. I've been really impressed so far. I was a big fan of the old Vertex shoes and I was apprehensive about an overhaul of them. I honestly think these are better in every way. The gaiter is tighter and more anatomical. The varied tread has great traction and edges well. The differing densities of foam make a big difference in the feel of the shoe. You can really feel the increased cushioning below the heel. Overall, Arcteryx has nailed it with a shoe than can do it all. These things climb really well but feel so light and promote a more natural gait than an approach shoe, like they actually want to be run in. They're perfect for the kind of fast and light alpinism/mountain running that I find really inspiring.
These shoes blew me away. They’re incredibly light, which makes a huge difference when clipped to the harness for long multi-pitch missions—you barely feel them. The Vibram sole is impressively sticky, giving tons of confidence on 5.easy terrain. If you size them snug, I’m sure they’d edge surprisingly well too. I was initially concerned they’d run hot and leave my feet sweaty, but they’re way more breathable than expected. The upper is made of a mesh-like fabric that keeps things cool, though it does mean they're far from waterproof—something to be aware of. That said, traction in mud is excellent, which is a pleasant surprise for such a lightweight design. Overall, these shoes strike a great balance between trail performance and climbing utility. Super impressed.
I absolutely love this shoe. It's come with me on long alpine days of running and scrambling. It feels so light and nimble while still offering ample protection. I also find it runs much better than most shoes in this category. I've done several ultra distance runs in this shoe and had no complaints. The matryx upper is pretty bomb proof too. I've logged over 350 miles in a pair and their is really no signs of significant wear.
Fantastic running and overall comfortable walking-around shoe! Almost feels like a part of my foot. Reminds me of the comfort of my distance-running track shoes (other brand that I won't name here :) from back in high school. Love these Vertex Speed shoes!
