I had a pair of All WTHR's that wore out, so I bought these and I am deeply disappointed. I absolutely love the fit, as I have for all my Altras. But I bought them last March, and didn't use them until this winter ~November. I am a student and I walk and bike around campus every day with these when its cold, rainy, and/or snowy. The waterproof is now completely gone, and my feet get wet in the snow and rain. Not worth buying. Its just ridiculous to spend this much on a waterproof shoe only for it to have such short lasting waterproofing.
Lone Peak has been my go to for trail running and backpacking for years. But unfortunately, Altra has ruined the best boot out there. The whole point of the Altra Lone Peak is zero drop, wide toe box, and very light. I don’t care if it wears out quickly. It was so comfortable and light I’m fine buying a new pair after 2-3 backpacking trips. But nes version if both the waterproof and non waterproof are heavier, narrower and higher on ankle. Completely opposite to the concept of the lone peak. If Altra wants to make a bigger more traditional boot, that’s fine, But keep the Lone Peak the same light, minimal boot it’s concept always was.
I usually wear a size 12 (11.5 on a Brannock), and the 12 fits well, roomy but not sloppy. Comfort is excellent, more like a trail runner than a boot. That said, they’re not truly waterproof. On the trail and again in a sink test, water leaked through the mesh over the toes, even though the waterproof booty should have kept it out. I’d call them water-resistant at best. Altra should consider adding gore-tex lining for an authentic waterproof Lone Peak Mid because this shoe is very comfortable and has so much potential. I rated it a three because the comfort and fit were solid for me, but I had hoped they would be waterproof.
I've been on the search for the ultimate lightweight, comfortable hiking shoe/boot. Pros: The fit is excellent! They fit my foot very well without any noticeable pressure points, except for where they crease over the toes, but that did improve over time. They also look great! I even wore them to work meetings. Cons: I just couldn't get used to the zero drop and there just isn't enough cushion or support for my liking. I tried various combinations of inserts, but I was still having Achilles and heel pain.
I bought a pair of the Lone Peak 9 Mid boots this summer, and used them digging muddy ditches in Pennsylvania, on a 5 day hut-to-hut trip in Norway, for a month of backpacking and day hiking in Iceland, and more recently, snowshoeing in Wisconsin. They started out amazingly waterproof, keeping my feet dry though fully immersed in mud and water. They gradually degraded to water resistant, over a couple months of hard use. Still, doing daily hikes in very wet Icelandic conditions, they were WAY dryer than the more conventional boots others were using. And they still handle snow just fine. They are super flexible and that, along with the classic Altra flat sole and wide toe box, makes them very comfortable right out of the box. After a month of continuous hard use, however, I found myself wishing the sole was a little stiffer, as one foot became a bit sore. Overall the boots did great. Recommended!
I just returned from a hiking trip to Peru. These boots were comfortable from the minute I put them on and performed well over rocky trails and in the rain. I am so grateful for the wide toe box and the lighter weight construction. I have been hiking for 50+ years and feet change over time and I need a wide shoe. Last summer, my go to hiking boots in leather/Gore-Tex/wide gave me blisters for the first time on the 2nd day of a10-day Tour Mt. Blanc hike. To compensate, I laced the boots tighter, and I ended up with boot-lace neuropathy by the end of the trip. It took months to recover and I am thrilled to have these boots that will keep me on the trail.
The term waterproof is a bit of an exaggeration. It seems as though they are reliant upon a spray applied material as opposed to actual boot construction for their waterproofing. The boots would be great if it wasn't for this. They fit great and are super comfortable - but after about 6 months of use now when the top of the toe/boot gets wet the interior ends up damp. It's not the end of the world - but I would prefer not to be solely reliant upon a spray applied product for dry feet. My last set of boots by Lowa started to fall apart after 600 miles and I never had an issue with water.infiltration.
Unfortunately, these boots have completely ruined the Altra reputation for me. I typically love their trail shoes and boots because of the comfort, but I bought these specifically for waterproof capabilities, which lasted only one month. I’ve had them for two months now and my feet get completely soaked through the first few minutes I’m out in the rain with very slight puddles. I’m a dog trainer and am outside with the dogs, rain or shine.. I’m on my feet training all day.. my feet absolutely cannot afford to be getting so wet so early into my workday. The boots stay soaked inside for 4-5 days once they’ve been wetted. I’m truly disappointed and feel that I’ve completely wasted my money on these. As for this Altra boot model.. I absolutely do not recommend.
Very comfortable around the upper and ankle area right out of the box, which tends to be a problem with mid boots. Light weight. Grippy like all other Lone Peaks. There are some bad reviews that say they are too narrow but this isn’t the case for me. I believe my feet are on the wider side since I tend to wear minimalist zero drop shoes, and my toes tend to spread out. However, these fit perfectly. Highly recommend!
I have a pair of Altra street running shoes that I absolutely love. These boots have significantly less arch support. The extra grip is unnoticeable. The street runners have much better grip due to the different rubber souls and wave pattern rather than traditional Vibram style lugs. I wore them to work for eight hours and they actually hurt my feet really bad because my feet would roll towards the inside. I like that they’re waterproof and have wonderful wide toe box but that’s it. Returned. Altra needs to go back to the drawing board on these.
